Mrs. Hyena's Picture

I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. About Mrs. Hyena

It Must Be A Sign

April 29th, 2011 @ 3:09 pm by Mrs. Hyena

Mr. Hyena’s side of the guest list is MUCH larger than mine. We are getting married in a fairly small church. If we went with the traditional “bride’s side, groom’s side,” my side would be…sad looking, and there wouldn’t be room for everyone on his side. There won’t be any ushers, and I like the idea of letting people sit wherever they want, but I didn’t know how to convey that until I saw this sign:

Sign from Mrs. Hippo

Hmm. I could do something like that!

I had a couple 11 x 14 sheets of glass lying around (they came from some photo frames I bought, but the pictures I matted for them were too thick for the glass to fit back in) and was looking for a way to use them. I used the paint pen I bought for my hanger project and some silver spray paint I found at my parents’ house. (Woohoo! This project was fuh-REE!)

Step 1: Get on the computer and type out your text in the font you want the sign to be in. Print it out.

Step 2: Tape your paper with the text to the underside of the glass. The glass should be on top of the words in the way you’d like them to be read.

Step 3: Use the paint pen to trace over the words through the glass. Two coats’ll do it!

Step 4: I didn’t like the blank space in between the two lines of text, so I drew a heart in between. <3

Step 5: When the text is complete and dry, flip the glass over. Spray paint the backside of the glass (the side without the text). Let it dry. You can do two coats, but I’m lazy and only did one, and it still looks good.

Step 6: Flip it over to reveal your signage masterpiece! (It looks better than this in real life—the glass makes it hard to take a picture of.) The part I love best? Because the paint is on both sides of the glass, automatic drop shadooow!

I plan to prop it up outside the sanctuary on one of those little photo stands.

Are you doing his-side/her-side seating?

That’s great!! Seeing as we have about 170 family members on my side, 15 on his and 20-30 mutual friends it would be a very sad looking room if we did traditional “his-side”, “her-side”.

haha, I was trying to figure out what that weird fan image was in the middle of your sign - reflection, duh. :)

Looks great, and what a good idea! I have so many glass photo fronts lying around, I should do something like this!

beautiful! and people won’t even know that this is so one side of the church won’t look more crowded than the other!

In my case, well, in my country we don’t have that tradition. Everyone seated where they pleased. Of course, front row was for our parents and our maid of honor and best man.

Love how you changed the words and said ‘we invite you to…’ it sounds so much kinder!

Love the ideas! I didn’t think of the sitting sides! I think we are only assigning seats to our close family (sisters, moms, dads, grandparents).. the others can seat wherever they want

Ooooooooo! That’s a nifty idea–love it! We’re not doing sides either, although we don’t have an adorable sign to tell people that!

I think the idea of a sign is good in that people don’t have to wonder “what side am I supposed to sit on?”

I think I might have done it more like “Please choose a seat on any aisle,” rather than “DON’T pick a side,” if that makes sense.
It just somehow hints that you are trying to calm some family feud? “Don’t pick sides.”

I also say this as at work, we have signs that say “please refrain from using your cell phone” rather than “NO using cell phones.” But maybe we are just overly tip-toe-y and I do get that it “flows” saying ‘choose a seat not a side.’

As long as people get the message, tho!

What a clever way to make the sign - I wouldn’t have thought of that. Looks great!

@toshella: Share when you do! I have a few extras that I don’t know what to do with now!
@Miss Seal: Aw, no need to feel inept! I love reading your posts!

I like your idea, but I’m wondering if you might want to plan to have someone guide guests to balance the room. People tend to sit near their friends if your groups are not balanced the signs may not help unless you have only enough seating for the guests…

The sign looks great! We didn’t do his side her side since Mr. E’s side was so small, but we had the ushers make sure the guests filled both sides.
