About Mrs. Hyena

Throwing Money at Our Problems

April 30th, 2011 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Hyena

I’ll admit, up until a couple months ago I did not consider myself a DIY bride. It wasn’t until I was talking to Planning Buddy J about our corsages a while back that I realized how many details I’ve unintentionally DIY-ed.

While I was not planning to be a DIY queen, I DID consider myself to be a budget bride. And oh ho ho did I have big ideas for that one before I got knee-deep in planning.

Wedding cake? Oh, we’ll just get the local HEB grocery to make it! Catering? HEB has party platters, too! Flowers? HEB’s got ‘em. You may be sensing a theme. I freaking love HEB.

Oh, HEB, you are so good to me…

All of these could have been great ideas, but unfortunately there was still a heavy DIY element to these ideas. And frankly, my poor little bride brain couldn’t handle it.

I realized I would rather spend the extra cash on our cakes in order to have them done by a professional and delivered to us, instead of selecting from the pre-made “cakes we know how to make” bakery booklet and picking them up ourselves the morning of the wedding. I would rather pay someone to make really good food that I don’t have to figure out how to keep fresh or warm. And, well, you already know how I feel about flowers. I’m pretty sure HEB doesn’t regularly stock peonies. Even if they did, my head would explode if I had to wait until the last minute to get them arranged.

At some point, we have to figure out which is worth more: Our time or our money? Our money or our sanity?

Now, I realize that I am putting quite a lot of effort into the DIY aspect of our wedding, but I’m justifying that because the majority of the projects I’m taking on are ones that I wanted to work on. I know the limits of my capabilities. (I don’t think I’ve ever successfully baked anything; therefore, I should not delude myself into thinking I could make our wedding cake.) If a project sounds awful and difficult, I don’t want to waste my time doing it.

I’ll admit, there are a couple projects that I do NOT want to be working on (such as, oh, a DIY BAR—more to come on that later), but I’m trying to keep those to a minimum. I’m not fun when I’m stressed out. I’d like to remain fun!

What kind of bride are you? Is it super weird to love a grocery store so much? :)

naw I <3 Publix with a ridiculous passion, and miss it so much while I’m at college. Every time I have to grocery shop at a non-Publix, I die a little inside.

I know exactly what you mean! I had relly good intentions of doing A LOT of stuff myself since we have a lot of time yet, but i have learned (some) of my limited capabilities. Do to this…our budget has gone up just a bit.

We got our flowers from H-E-B and DIY-ed them, but the florist at the H-E-B plus could also arrange them and they ordered flowers that I wanted (though they have to be in season and easy to get). I’d keep your arrangements simple because they’re still a grocery store, but they are reasonable.

Central Market also does flowers, but I don’t think College Station has one. I mean in Waco we feel fancy by going to the HEBs that have a seafood counter (ie, not the one near Baylor)

i love HEB too…in fact, my FI actually works at one! they’re awesome but sometimes though it’s easier to go through a professional than HEB.

I totally hear you on this one. In many instances, you really can’t put a price on convenience + sanity.

I totally HEB’d our wedding! The cakes, cookies, tea, lemonade, and flowers were all bought there!

Granted, I had people that were willing to pick up at 8am for a noon ceremony, but I got rave reviews on how great everything looked and tasted.

We also didn’t want to go through the effort of freezing the top layer of our cake, but we can just go back to HEB next year and order another one for our anniversary.

(Oh, and Jason’s Deli was our caterer - gotta love keeping it cheap, tasty, and local!)

This actually has little to do with this post (aside from the peonies), but I saw these and instantly thought of your lovely DIY flowers!!

I don’t think we have HEB here in MI, but I love Costco for many of the same reasons! I agree with you 100% that sometimes time = money = sanity. :)

I grew up in Western NY, we have Wegmens. It drives me crazy sometimes not to have it in CT.

I agree though. I’m a very DIY, but at some point just pay the money to have it done.

I love that you posted this! We have so started having conversations about when it makes sense to just throw some money at the problem. How do you know when to stop, though?

I love DIY and I’m finding it hard to let go (and spend money). I wish we had HEBs, they sound amazing.

@Knubbsy-Wubbsy: Nope, no Central Market here. :(
@SqueakySquirrel: I’m glad you had so much success! Their cake is YUM.
@SapphireMOH: Those are sooo cute!
@Miss Tartlet: I <3 Costco too!!! Unfortch there’s not one here, and Sam’s is not the same. :)
@Ms. Ferris Wheel: Hm, good question. I’d say, if you are capable of doing it yourself, and it won’t stress you out unnecessarily, then go for the DIY. If it sounds horrible and no fun or would cause a ton of anxiety, probably better to $$. :)

People who don’t have HEB don’t understand my love of a grocery store!

I plan to wake up the morning of my wedding, head to HEB and see what flowers they have, grab some and make my own bouquet. And of course, all the food will come from there. My FH is insisting on a nacho bar.

Our flowers were done on Thursday afternoon and looked plenty fresh on Saturday afternoon. We refrigerated the bouquets and corsages, but the centerpiece flowers were just put into a cooler and left cracked open for air. We made a few bunches for the house with the leftover stems and they lasted in the house for at least a week. If you keep the water fresh, the HEB flowers really do last a while.
