Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

I Need a Dress GPS

May 2nd, 2011 @ 10:15 am by Mrs. Snow Cone

OK, so the first attempt at BM-dress shopping didn’t go so well. Thankfully, I’m not one to get bummed out at the first sign of failure. Instead, I devote every waking moment to finding a solution until I can show that obstacle who’s boss. Maybe not the best method of coping, but it works for me. So, I turned to my trusty interwebs to find some BM dresses that would pass muster. I scoured all of the various collections that my salon carried, hoping to find some winners. Unfortunately, nothing really jumped off the screen at me. I decided I just wasn’t trying hard enough and proceeded to look at the same dress pictures over and over and over again, willing one of them to wow me. Still nothing.

Then I took the alternate approach and decided to make everything a possibility. Short? Sure. Long? Why not. Chiffon or satin…why not both?! In a matter of one short mentality shift, I went from having nothing that caught my eye to having my eye caught by about 50 different dresses at once. I will confess that a certain dress was kind of pulling ahead…

…until Mr. Snow Cone let it be known that long BM dresses weren’t exactly his cup of tea. I know, I know…he’s not the one wearing them, but it’s kind of bold to say, “OK, thanks dear…I’m going to do the exact opposite of what you just suggested.” The combination of my change in perspective and Mr. Snow Cone’s feedback pretty much drove me to bridal insanity.

I began texting and emailing my mom every bridesmaids’-dress-related thought that popped into my brain…which was not just one or two. I then took some good ol’ motherly advice and stopped looking, stopped thinking…just…stopped. I closed my computer, refusing to look at another dress. I tried my best to shut my brain down to prevent the nonstop loop of dresses from parading through my thought bubbles. I took a temporary hiatus from the BM-dress world. And then, when I was ready, I employed two specific strategies, courtesy of mi madre.

First, I picked up the nearest bridal magazine and scanned through it as swiftly as possible. Rather than debating about the miniscule details of any given dress, I scanned all the images rapidly, taking note of what really caught my eye. And then I took myself (and just myself) to the bridal salon to try on as many dresses as I could stand. Considering that I had no direction, I decided this would be the best way to go. I could select a huge variety of dresses and try them on myself—I could get a handle on what I liked and didn’t like without feeling guilty for asking one of my poor BMs to try on the 40th dress of the day. Stay tuned to see some of the winners and some of the (ahem) losers of the bunch!

How did your BM-dress search go? Was it a headache or a breeze?

Wait, Mr. SC had an opinion on dresses! If it wasn’t food or music, I’m not sure Mr. HC even knew it was a decision! Impressive, Mr. SC, verrrry impressive! I can’t wait to see what you picked out!

mine’s is proving to be a headache….from the beginning i wanted my BMs to be able to choose what they want to wear cuz i felt like they knew what looked good on them more than i did……well….lemme tell you, i now know why the bride should be the one picking out the dresses…..its proving to be such a headache, no one can agree on anything, they all have their own opinions, etc…..ugh…lol we’ve decided to all go shopping together next week and you know what, i may just have to put my foot down and pick a dress for them to wear…..lol

I had so many issues deciding on my BM dresses because 1. I have some ladies who HATE shopping 2. I have some that are on limited budgets and 3. They are all different shapes and sizes. I had originally decided on long and found some at DB that my girls looked fine in, but I HATED them. So I went out shopping myself as you did and found the perfect ones. BELSOIE L3020 they are short and flowy and just perfect! Especially since you can easily wear them again. They were a hit!

MY FI said the same thing and I was like, you are not wearing this, its what my girls would be comfortable in. Then he said they were fine. So this is def a girly decision and if you want it, then do it. By the way..love that dress and its my color too, I’m going to look it up!

Being the perfectionist that I am, I knew finding one dress (mine) would be more than enough work. I’m letting my BM’s pick their own dress just because I don’t want to deal with it!

Oh, and I LOVE that color of purple!

Nuuuu Mr. SC! I really like that you went to try on dresses solo, though. That makes so much sense!
