About Mrs. Pony

A Southern Staple

May 2nd, 2011 @ 12:52 pm by Mrs. Pony

For the last few months, I have kept this idea of incorporating Southern elements into our wedding in the back of my mind just waiting for the perfect idea to come along. One day, while innocently perusing one of the many lovely wedding blogs I frequent, I came across an idea that stopped me in my tracks. The absolute perfect Southern addition to our wedding day.

So, what is this amazingly perfect idea, you ask?

A BISCUIT BAR!

When I showed this idea to Mr. Pony, he was positively giddy. The man loves his biscuits. Biscuits are a staple in Southern cuisine that we regularly consume in mass quantities when we visit Mr. Pony’s family in Tennessee. I think they will be the perfect little Southern addition to our wedding day. Plus, I like that they are a little different from the boring dinner rolls that are commonly served at weddings.

The best part of a biscuit bar? All the fixins*!!

White gravy (just like my grandma made it):

Savannah Bee Company honey! This is the perfect way to acknowledge our engagement in Savannah. We actually picked up this particular honey while visiting the store’s honey bar, and it tastes so good!

Homemade preserves from Mr. Pony’s Mema and Aunt would be a delicious addition to our spread (pun intended).

I’m not a big molasses eater, but with a smile like that from Grandma, who could resist?

We’ll also have some other tasty toppings. We will obviously have butter, but I am still considering some other options outside of the sweet category. Country Living (yes, I have a subscription) also suggests mustard, cheese spread, and Nutella as biscuit toppings. I can get on board with anything that has Nutella on it (or in it or on a spoon), and I think mustard and a cheese spread would add a savory component to the biscuit bar.

We’re still hammering out the logistics with our caterer, but we are definitely having biscuits at our wedding reception. I am so happy to be able to incorporate this decidedly Southern element into our wedding day, and I hope it will make our Southern guests, including Mr. Pony, feel a little more at home.

What fixins do you prefer on your biscuits?

*Mr. Pony informed me that fixins (not fixings) is the correct spelling/pronunciation in the South, so that was fixed for our Southern friends’ enjoyment.

Our wedding is in Savannah (we are from the area) and my best friend works for Savannah Bee Company. It is THE BEST!! For your biscuit bar, I definitely suggest their white honey. It has the texture and consistency of cake icing- rich, thick, creamy- but tastes like honey, and it’s specially created for breads/biscuits/rolls. Every time I try it I want to eat the whole bottle.

Oh, and I forgot to add- a very quintessentially Southern biscuit topping is cane syrup.

I am from Vermont and we put maple syrup on EVERYTHING! There are also some delicious flavored butters, like maple butter, apple butter, cinnamon and sugar butter, etc. I think this is so original and a great way to represent your roots!!

I love this idea! I’m a butter and honey kind of girl, but I would be so tempted to try many of the other awesome fixins. Love the idea of flavored butters too.

Oh yummmmm! What a sweet idea! I’m a big fan of butter, jam, or honey on my biscuits. I also LOOOVE chicken and biscuits, so chicken gravy is great, too.

So creative! And like your man, mine could eat ‘biddles’ as he refers to them, for every single meal!

Are you planning on making the biscuits yourself? and how are you planning to keep these warm or are you serving cold? This sounds delightful!!!

You’re making me hungry… fortunately we had chicken and dumplings on Saturday (where the dumplings were Grands biscuits). Have to finish the leftovers for dinner I guess!

@ohheavenlyday: Savannah Bee Honey is seriously amazing. That white honey sounds so good! If I could serve all of their honeys I would be happy with my wedding.
@tocarat: hehe, I’ve never heard that name before, that’s cute!
@crystalirene: Our caterer will be making them. I guess I didn’t ask her if they would be served warm or cold, probably something to think about. If we would like them warm I’m sure she would have the right tools, I just worry about them drying out.
@mightywombat: Ditto.
