About Mrs. Hyena

Island Time

May 3rd, 2011 @ 11:22 am by Mrs. Hyena

As you all know, we’ll be cruisin’ around the Caribbean for our honeymoon. Last week we finally booked our excursions, so now I can tell you about all the grand adventures we’re going to have! I am super pumped!

First Port: Key West, Florida

Mr. Hyena has always been a little bit of a daredevil; he’s gone skydiving, likes thrill rides, and thinks all the scariest tasks on The Amazing Race look super fun. And me? I am terrified of free-falling, roller coasters, jumping off high things, and things I’ve never tried before…so when he suggested we go parasailing on the “first leg” of our trip, I was very hesitant. That’s high up! And it probably moves fast!

He finally convinced me that it would be fun, though. We watched a video of other people parasailing, and it didn’t look like they were going fast at all—just chillaxing and taking in the gorgeous views from the sky. I can deal with that! The parachute even has a smiley face on it, so it can’t possibly be scary, right? Plus, agreeing to parasailing has gotten Mr. H so excited that the excitement is contagious. :)

Second Port: Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

I’ve never been out of the country before, so the stop in Grand Cayman will be my first foray into being a world traveler! For this stop, we decided to go snorkeling. I’ve snorkeled once before—when my family went to Hawaii one year—and it was so much fun! (Mom Hyena wouldn’t put her face in the water because she was convinced she would drown. I told her if she starts to drown she should take her face back out of the water!)

Anyway, the adventure we signed up for is snorkeling at a coral reef off the coast of Grand Cayman and going to “Stingray City” to see its namesake! Oh, and apparently stingrays eat squid and we can feed them. Super awesome.

Third and Final Port: Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Island Time : wedding college station honeymoon Dunns River Falls

I’ve heard that the biggest and most famous attraction in Ocho Rios is Dunns River Falls. We’ll get to hike one of the waterfalls and swim in the pool at the bottom of it! This excursion also goes through Enchanted Gardens botanical garden, which also has a bunch of waterfalls inside. Prettyyyyyy. I love doing nature walks, and I’m glad Mr. Hyena wanted to do this one, too!

What are you doing for your honeymoon? Do you have any grand adventures planned? Tell me about them!

We went on a similar cruise 3 years ago. It was fun! We did sting ray city and I got to hold and kiss a giant sting ray. And then we also did Dunns River Falls. That was a lot of fun too! You will enjoy the entire trip!

How fun! I went on a cruise like that in October, but we left out of Galveston so we went to Cozumel instead of Key West. We went to Stingray City also in Cayman! It is so pretty there, but I actually started to panic and had to get out, but it is so beautiful! I also did the same thing in Jamaica, it is so much fun! You will have a blast!

Parasailing is amazingly smooth! It is so awesome!!! It was definitely one of my favorite things to have ever done. Sounds like an amazingly fun honeymoon.

My parents recently did an anniversary cruise similar to this, and I remember they loved Jamaica, but highly recommended having water shoes for the Falls excursion. Enjoy!

I am terrified of free-falling, roller coasters, jumping off high things, and things I’ve never done before. Just like you! And I absolutely loved parasailing. Not at all scary, just a relaxing ride over the ocean with an awesome view.

Playing with stingrays, and parasailing are a blast!! My FI and I go on a cruise every year and do all sorts of stuff like that. Dunns river falls was quite an experience! It was good but it would’ve been better if I didnt have a mild panic attack! haha have fun!!!

We went on that exact cruise on October! Well almost, we encountered a hurricane and we were diverted to Cozumel instead of going to Ocho Rios. We went parasailing in Key West, I wasn’t a big fan but FH LOVED it! We didn’t go through the ship to book it, we did it on our own and it was about 1/2 the price! The best thing to do in Key West is rent a scooter! It was hands down the best decision we made. It made it so easy to get around and we were able to see a lot more of the island.

Ooh! Fun! Make sure if you have little water shoes to bring them for Dunn’s River Falls. It is super slippery and we had some locals tell us to buy some. 2 of us did and the other did not. We had fun while she was pretty miserable trying to not fall down. We also watched tons of people without them not having a good time :/ They are over priced if you buy them there but you can get them at WalMart for like $5 a pair and they are small and pack easy :)

1) think of how relaxed you’ll be for the remainder of the cruise by getting parasailing out of the way early into the trip!

2) my family totally did a stingray snorkel thing in Grand Cayman, and it was awesome. Little creepy at first, but once you realize they don’t want to kill you, it’s amazing. I did manage to use improper feeding technique and the ray accidentally sucked up the squid and my finger. Fortunately, rays don’t have teeth, so I was left with nothing more than about 100 paper cuts, tops. Best part of that mishap? Rays are relatives of sharks, so, technically, I’ve survived a shark attack.

I went parasailing in Key West! That was about 11 years ago, but I remember it so clearly, it was amazing! It is very relaxing and you barely even feel like you are moving at all! Very low stress - I am sure you will love it.

@kaytiiie: Glad I’m not the only one, and I’m glad you had a good time!
@Miss Pony: I know! Smilies have to be fun!
@shMORGANbord: Thanks for the tip! We weren’t quite sure how we were going to get around, so this is good advice!
@rtnofthemack: I’ve heard this from several people IRL too, so we’ll have to make sure we do that.
@Miss Snow Cone: Woooo, badass! :)
