Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

After realizing we weren’t 100% on the same page with our honeymoon ideas, we took a step back from the decision. We both kind of ruminated on what we wanted out of this vacation, and then tried to meet halfway. We agreed we wanted a warm beach locale, we wanted to have the freedom to leave our hotel/resort and explore a bit, we wanted some good eatin’, and we wanted something that was relaxing, flexible, and low-key. We didn’t want to be go-go-going all day long, but at the same time, we wanted a place that would offer us some opportunities to be active if we wanted to, whether that be watersports, sightseeing, or shopping.

We honed our search to the southern part of the Atlantic Coast, homing in on Hilton Head, Charleston, and Savannah as real contenders. Nothing was officially decided until Mr. Snow Cone’s cousin, who had recently moved to Charleston, suggested that we look into a resort called Wild Dunes.

It’s an island resort located in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, about a 30-minute drive from downtown Charleston. Its huge property includes a bunch of different accommodation options—a standard (but luxurious) hotel, condos, beach houses, and villas. They have a spa and a whole slew of water activities such as kayaking, fishing, and sunset cruises. We were pretty smitten with this place immediately, so we took the plunge and booked ourselves a honeymoon! We reserved an oceanfront villa that looks like the perfect combination of cozy and spacious for the two of us. I am kind of in love with the idea of waking up to my new husband and hearing the Atlantic Ocean just a few yards away. (*swoon*)

In the process of booking, we found out a few things that served as icing on the honeymoon-budget cake. First of all, the travel industry switches to their fall season the week after our wedding, meaning rates are lowered by a considerable amount per night. Additionally, we were able to save 10% off the nightly rate by tacking on a prepaid meal at one of the resort’s restaurants. Finally, our beloved Southwest Airlines started flying to Charleston just recently, plus my parents generously gave us ticket vouchers from Southwest points.

We get to laze about on the beach all day, drive into Charleston for some of their supposedly amazing food, and then rinse and repeat the whole thing all over again the next day!

We overcame our financial hurdles, reached a compromise, picked a destination we love, and put a big, fat, major check on our to-do list, all of which feels pretty nice.

Where are you going on your honeymoon? Any restaurant recommendations for Charleston?

hilton head is beautiful too, and savannah but im so glad you picked Charleston!

you will love it! check out poogans porch and high cotton for some good eats! be sure to go on one of the ghost tours at night! i would suggest the jail tour. take a horse drawn carriage ride and do some shopping at the straw market.

i got engaged down there - i could go on and on about the things i love about Charleston! great pick!

i will be down there memorial day weekend with my husband celebrating my 25th birthday!

As a Southwest Airlines employee, I’ve got to say: starting service to Charleston was one of our more exciting announcements for me! Now I am just dying to check this place out!! Great honeymoon spot!

I love Charleston! I second the Poogan’s Porch recommendation. Great food and a cute story about the name to go along with it!

We visit Charleston several times a year and LOVE it. The food is always fantastic and there are tons of activities to do downtown. Although cheesy, we love the carriage tours and walking ghost tours. They are a great way to see parts of the city besides the market and King Street. Our favorite restaurants are Magnolia Grill and Jestine’s Kitchen. Magnolia is amazing, much better IMO than the more popular Poogan’s Porch. Y’all will have an awesome honeymoon!

My parents just moved to Charleston last year, it is fantastic. The food is definitely some of the best I’ve had, but I would definitely recommend:
- The Oak is a wonderful (but pricey) steakhouse
- Magnolia’s, Blossom, or Cypress (they’re all in a row) are owned by the same and have similar styles but distinct flavors. Magnolia’s and Blossom are my favorite of the three.
- If you can, I’d also go up to the Shem Creek area, which is just outside of downtown. Red’s is my favorite restaurant there, they have a beautiful deck over the water with wonderful seafood.

It’s such a romantic city, you will have so much fun!

I heart Charleston in a serious way! High Cotton is phenomenal and there is rooftop bar on one of the historic hotels with a pool. It’s a great place to go for an after dinner drink. Have fun!!!

I used to live right by Isle of Palms, and it is GORGEOUS! (My grandmother fell in love and took sand with her home to Chicago before we moved away, so we still have a little piece of Charleston with us :D) It is less of a “tourist” beach than some of the other beaches in the area, so it is quieter, and way prettier. Definitely hit the open air markets, and Rainbow Row downtown.

we went to charleston recently on an impromptu weekend trip (we’re in raleigh, nc) and it was AMAZING! try Fig (yum) and Bloom (double yum) for dinner. if you like alcoholic icees (and let’s face it, who doesn’t????) make sure you walk down from Bloom to Wet Willies.

we had a absolute blast in the 1.5 days we were there - you are going to have SO much fun!!!

We stayed at Wild Dunes in December a few years ago for a long weekend and LOVED it! It is a wonderful hotel. We also loved Charleston and its historic architecture! The only reason Wild Dunes isn’t at the top of the list for our mini-moon is because we really lucked out the first time in December with weather…not sure if we could pull that off twice. :)
