Catering to Our Tastes

May 4th, 2011 @ 8:39 am by Mrs. Pony

Now that the drama that is napkin making is behind me (for the time being), it is time to focus on more important things, like food. This week, we booked our caterer who will bring joy, happiness, and, most importantly, delicious food to our wedding day.

After complaining to a couple of my bridesmaids about the lackluster tasting Mr. Pony and I attended awhile back, BM J suggested I check out Sugar Arts Catering. BM J’s mom had used them with great success at her son’s rehearsal dinner and found them to be reasonably priced. In a matter of hours, I was on my computer stalking Sugar Arts’s website and emailing the owner. Kamra, the owner, was so quick to respond (a definite bonus) that we set up our tasting a mere three days later.

Papa Pony, Mr. Pony, and I all went to Sugar Arts with big appetites and high hopes for a caterer that would meet our budget and our expectations. We left full, satisfied, and with a booked caterer. I love when things work out easily.

We chose early on to have a buffet-style dinner. I know some people feel buffets are less formal, but I was more concerned with giving our guests plenty of options to choose from to make sure no one leaves hungry. (I hate being hungry.) Since I don’t eat beef or pork, I had to rely on the opinions of Papa Pony and Mr. Pony for our meat options, but they consider themselves to be experts on the subject, so I feel our wedding menu is in good hands.

And now, the starting lineup for our wedding cuisine.

Beef au jus:

This has always been one of Papa Pony’s absolute favorite dishes, so it was kind of a no-brainer that we would end up picking it. Both Mr. Pony and Papa Pony couldn’t stop gushing over how tasty it was, so that helped too.

Pulled pork barbecue with rolls:

I really wanted a barbecue dish to incorporate a little Southern culture, so I was secretly hoping Papa Pony and Mr. Pony would like this dish. Luckily for me, it was their favorite pork dish, and my plan is falling into place.

Eggplant parmesan:

We basically chose this so I, and other non-meat-enthusiasts, could have something to eat. It is a good vegetarian alternative that I hope will please all of our guests. And it has cheese…mmmm…cheese.

Scalloped potatoes with cheese:

All of the potato dishes were amazing, but the scalloped potatoes had the perfect blend of spices and cheese that we couldn’t pass up. I kind of wish I had some right now.

Succotash (picked purely because of its name):

Corn and green beans. ‘Nough said.

Biscuits, of course:

After hoping to include a biscuit bar for months, I basically told Kamra that this was a deal breaker for me. Fortunately, Kamra said biscuits could be substituted for rolls at no extra cost! And, she is happy to work with us on any and all of the fixins we can dream up! I am so happy the biscuit bar will be a reality on our wedding day!

Salad:

Served with two dressings and homemade croutons, salad was kind of an afterthought after all the other delicious options we tried at the tasting. But we managed to decide on a basic green salad.

We tried so many awesome dishes at our tasting, we didn’t have room to think about appetizers.

We have plenty of time to decide and taste what our guests will eat during the cocktail hour in the next few months.

Are you super excited about your wedding food?

Man, your stuff sounds great! We’re doing Prime Rib au jus because I love me some steak. I’m a little worried though because I don’t want it to be overdone. I’m wondering if I can ask our caterers to make it medium in the middle and rare on the ends or medium well/med. rare on the ends. That way, everyone’s happy and not eating a leather sole.

@Miss Biscuit: Uh, you can totally ask/force them to cook it how you want it done. You’re paying them, right? You don’t want to taste shoe at your wedding.
@Miss Lox: @Miss Tartlet: Biscuit bar is totally going to be the star of the wedding. And I’m ok with that.
@Kristin: I really liked her! Kam is so easy to get along with and her food was so good for the deal we are getting (her cakes are really good too)! I hope everything goes well at your tasting!

Can someone please explain what a biscuit is in the states? Here in Aus a biscuit is either a cracker or a cookie. Is it like a scone?

@Roux: Sorry to leave you out of the loop! A biscuit in the states is similar to a scone, but is more soft and flaky. They are generally more buttery than sweet and are often used in place of dinner rolls (at least in Mr. Pony’s family). Does that help? They are mighty tasty, I definitely recommend them!

@Miss Pony: So like a savoury scone? Ok that helps a lot! I should find a recipe and give them a go. :)
