Avoiding the 10-Day Forecast

May 5th, 2011 @ 6:32 pm by Ms. Sloth

In the countdown of days ’til the wedding, today is a special one, because we’ve hit two milestones.

First: we’re in single digits, y’all! Nine days away!

Secondly: our wedding day is finally showing up on the 10-day forecast (even though we’re only 9 days away. But the forecast includes today, so it’s really 9 days out too. Or something. Whatever).

Anyhoodle, I promised myself long ago that I wouldn’t stalk the 10-day forecast. Why?

Because I think that weather forecasts 10 days out are wildly inaccurate. It can change countless times before W-day, and why should I torture myself? I’ve been in a Zen state for a while, but it’s not going to last and the forecast might be what does me in. If it says that the weather will be crappy for our wedding, I’ll get stressed. If it says that the weather will be nice, I’ll worry that the forecast will change. I’m better off waiting for a few more days before I stalk Weather.com.

I’m trying my best to wait until five days to go before I check the forecast. I may crack at one week, but here’s hoping that I’ve got some willpower left in me.

If we end up with shitty weather, we’ll deal. But I want a few relaxing days left before I worry about it.

Did anyone else try to avoid the 10-day forecast as long as possible before the wedding?

Sadly, I got hooked onto the 15+ day forecasts, which called for 55 degrees and partly sunny skies for my April 2nd wedding. Three days before the big day, however, a snow storm bringing up to 10 inches of snow was predicted for the day before — the day when many of my guests would be traveling. Fortunately it was a false alarm and we had 55 degrees and sunny skies. It was a beautiful day, although I prefer warmer temperatures.

Regardless of whether or not we check, we have absolutely NO control over the weather.

Fortunately for you Miss Sloth, May tends to be a great month in the northeast. :-)

Great advice! I was pretty OK the 2 weeks before our wedding but the 10 day forecast came out (predicted thunderstorms) and I freaking flew off my rocker. Like SCREAM-CRIED.

The day ended up being endlessly sunny, 90 degrees….like it ALWAYS is in Sacramento in June. So, yes. Great advice. 10 day forecast is superdumb.

We’re date twins! I live in CO next to the mountains, and weather predictions are wildly inaccurate. Needless to say, I’ve been stalking the weather websites that give 14-day predictions. Yesterday the forecast was for record warm and sunny for the 14th. Today the forecast is for mild with thunderstorms. I almost had a panic attack, until I realized that there is no way anyone can predict mountain weather more than a couple of days in advance!

Especially if you’ve already got contingency plans, eff stressing about the weather - there’s not s&*t you can do about it anyway, so there is no point in stressin! :)

My mother made a BIG deal of telling me “be calm, I have to tell you things might not go as planned, but it’ll be ok…. the forecast says theres a 10% chance of rain.” I really wanted to tell her to say that to the mirror because I was totally relaxed and she was the one freaking out! Lol.

The 10 day is completely unreliable! I wonder if anyone has ever done a study on how accurate it actually is. Being from Philly, on the bright side, the forecast has been pretty off lately (even a day or two days in advance)!!

I was hooked by the 15-day forecast LOL. We live in the sunniest state EVER, Arizona, and I couldn’t believe it was predicting mid 80’s everyday but our wedding day where it said it would drop 20 degrees & rain most of the day! I was a sad sad panda

Unfortunately, the forecast was correct BUT the weather gods were nice enough to stop the rain just at the music began (it was an outdoor ceremony) and sunshine even peaked during our vows. Shortly after the rain commenced. It all worked out in the end, so don’t obsess too much ;)

The 10-day forecast is completely worthless. The forecast for my wedding 8 days out was sunny and ZERO PERCENT chance of rain…Oh, the irony.
So yeah, clearly just a bunch of BS, smart not to look!

At first I thought that was your forecast and I was going to be so happy for you. I hope you can avoid looking at the forecast and the good hive vibes will scare off the rain for you.

I wish I could earn a great living being wrong most of the time like meterologists. Listen, Slothy…you KNOW we have no control over the weather, so it would be a massive waste of time and energy to focus on it. Like you said, you’ll deal with the hand you get. Your Day will be marvelous no matter what. For realz.

Never looked at it. Best decision (or apathy) ever. It was ungodly hot the day after our wedding and I think it might have rained the following weekend, but our wedding day? Perfect.

Is it wrong that this totally made me go careening around the internet for a forecast? I mean, I’m pretty sure that was the opposite of your intent here.

WOW single digits! I am with you - with much of our wedding being outdoors, people were asking me (maybe up to two months in advance - cray cray) if I was checking the weather. And I did not check it once. Not one time. Because really, what could I do about it? It was the one thing I could absolutely not control. Worked for me (even though most people didn’t even believe me).

The weather forecast was the death of me leading up to the wedding. I worried, then I chilled about it, then I worried a little bit more, and then I just dealt with it.

I don’t know how I did it, but I managed to NEVER look at the forecast before the weather. If it was going to rain, it would, and if not, then not! Really, there is nothing you can do about it, but stress. You already have plan B, so you’re double safe. And you won’t know if you have to use it until wedding morning, so why not just let it be? Fingers crossed and best of wishes!.

I also avoided looking at the 10 day forecast like it was the plague. I tried not to even look when our date was within the 5 day range, but by then people would update me on the weather anyhow. ;)

We looked, and it was a nightmare of epic proportions, with swings of 15 degrees in both directions. Bad idea.

I never watch the ten day forcast, like you said, it is never accurate. I have to admit, knowing myself, i will prob still do it when I get to single digits.

Haha, I’m already wanting to stalk the monthly averages, and I’ve even consulted the Farmer’s Alamanac.

I don’t think there’s much hope for me avoiding the 10-day forecast…
