Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Finding “Those Guys”

May 5th, 2011 @ 4:55 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

After having carefully constructed my floral vision, all I needed was for a professional to execute it. There are a handful of flower shops around Johnstown, some with better reputations than others. Between the relatively high number of options and the (probably) relatively low demand for wedding flowers in my small town, I kind of shuffled “finding a florist” to the back burner. I figured that a rose is a rose is a rose, so it wouldn’t really matter if I got Joe’s Floral or Mary’s Flowers or City Florists or any other place to slap together some flowers, tie them in a ribbon, and call it a day.  Maybe I was naive, maybe I was stupid, or maybe I was right. At this point in time, though, I’ll never know.

(OK, maybe not all roses are created equal…)

The reason I don’t know if all florists are actually interchangeable is because I never really looked into my options, good or bad. I never did site visits to receive proposals and hear their visions of my wedding-day flowers. Instead of poring over each and every option, which I’ve been known to do, I got one recommendation and went with it. I know that may sound kind of bold, but let me clarify: I got one recommendation over and over and over again. It seemed like every person in the Johnstown area who had attended or planned a wedding in the past two years all kept echoing the same name. Well, sort of. They actually kept echoing a vague but glowing review, such as, “Oh, you have to get those guys out in Hollsopple. Or Davidsville. Or Hooversville. Somewhere out there. They do amazing work.” No real names, no phone numbers, no websites. Just “those guys out there.” And we heard about “those guys out there” repeatedly.

Realistically speaking, for as little as we knew about these guys, if any of the pairs shown below could construct amazing wedding flowers and lived in rural Western-Central Pennsylvania, they honestly could have been the florists in question.

Finally, a family friend was able to track down their real name (Bob’s Floral) and their phone number. The combination of the nonstop parade of positive reviews and the headache of trying to locate these florists who are apparently enrolled in some sort of wedding witness-protection program made me more than inclined to just book ’em, Dan-o. So, I finally got my hands on their phone number, gave them a call, and plopped myself into their calendar for August 2011. It was such a breath of fresh air to book a vendor on the first try, without wringing my hands and wondering whether I made the right choice. It was a bit nerve-wracking that we signed on without having laid eyes on the florists, their shop, or their work, but I figure everyone couldn’t really be wrong about “those guys out there.”

Did you ever book a vendor solely based on others’ reviews?

Perhaps I’ll be proven wrong, but it seems to me that flowers are the least scary thing to sign on to, because honestly, even if they do a “bad” job you’re still getting flowers which are innately beautiful, right?

Haha love those images. At the Central PA Bridal Expo there were a lot of GORGEOUS flower displays, but I’m getting married in MD, lol. I literally planned to visit just one flower shop but there was one right next door to it that was closer to my parking space so I decided to go in to look, and they were so nice and real (suggesting less-expensive options and even giving me tips on what to do for non-floral centerpeices to make myself that were more me rather than trying to sell me the store) so I ended up going with the first shop I looked in! Helped that the price was right, haha.

Good luck with your florist!

Yes, we hired our officiant based on online reviews. Worst decision ever. Granted, you don’t need flowers to get married and these were online reviews.

I am looking for a florist in Johnstown too. Maybe you would be willing to share the number of that florist.

I love ALL of the pictures you used in this!! A+!!

I think out of “those guys” above, I would probably pick Mario & Luigi to do my flowers, as they might give me flowers with invincibility/fireball power. They know a thing or 2 about that. ;-)

Bert and Ernie would probably just pick primary colors for my bouquet, so that’s a no for me…

Ok, I’ll stop being silly ;-) . We might end up having to “book without seeing” for a few things, as we’re planning an out-of-town wedding. But I would, actually, trust the reviews if there are a LOT of them. (And if they weren’t “The Stepbrothers.” Ha!).

But that bouquet looks like your icon! I enjoy that the most, though it would SUCK to coordinate colors around that fella.

Funny enough, I did that with my flowers too! I’m getting married in a small town and figured I would just go with the one florist whose name I recognized from having spent a lot of time there as a child. But then, everyone kept talking about this place Eevy Ivy Over. Aside from loving their name (seriously, how cute is that name?!) everyone just had rave reviews about how wonderful they are and how they go above and beyond in all areas. I popped in and booked them straightaway without looking anywhere else. Wedding is nine weeks away and so far, she’s been awesome!

Brave move, Snow Cone! We relied heavily on online reviews, but did make sure to meet with our vendors before booking them (either in person or on the phone).

I love that the flowers look so much like your icon! I think real peoples experiences with vendors say a lot, especially if you know them. So Bob must do well!

We only talked to one DJ, on the strength of a lot of great reviews on a Canadian wedding board I found.

HAHAHA, imagine what a great story it would have been to have Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as your florists … :)
