I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!

Fit for a Toast

May 5th, 2011 @ 5:43 pm by Mrs. Giraffe

Okay hive, here’s a little new flash for you: a good toasting flute is hard to find. In the interest of full disclosure, that little tidbit should have read “an good toasting flute is hard to find a week and a half before your wedding” …but I digress. ;)

Last weekend, Mama Giraffe and I hunted the mall, party stores, other stores for the perfect toasting flutes. For those of you on a hunt of your own, the a few places we looked (that typically carry a handful of styles) were Bed, Bath & Beyond, Party City, Carson’s, Hallmark, A different Hallmark, Macy’s, Another Carson’s, and a handful of other places. There’s also quite a few to be found online, but that would entail not waiting until the last minute.

Mama Giraffe had absolutely no idea what she was getting into when she told me she’d like to buy toasting flutes for us. :) I think it’s my style: I wanted something simple and classy that would remind me of our  wedding. Tricky, eh?

Where to begin?

Well, I was initially leaning towards the Mikasa Love story, because I liked the cake server and cutter a lot. (FYI - Carson’s had all Mikasa Love Story on Sale last week, so keep an eye out for sales when shopping for pricey flutes.)

Funny story, I didn’t like the flutes at all. The bottoms looked too heavy for me, and even though they had two style of flutes (both match the server), I wasn’t feeling either of them. But, as a side note, the Love Story cake stand is probably the cutest I’ve ever seen. Someone go buy it.

Then came the Mikasa Ribbon flutes. To be honest, I loved these at first, but then I was worried the looked too simple, and wouldn’t look wedding-y enough to satisfy my taste for making something all sentimental. Also, these flutes don’t have a matching cutter & server so I had to let them go.

The Mrs and Mr flutes at Hallmark stole my heart the minute I saw them…but they were also the very first set I saw so we decided to hold off on buying them. You know, the grass is always greener, right? Anyway, Mama G and I left these at Hallmark and we on our merry way. Also, like the Ribbons, they didn’t have a server so whatever, yo. They aren’t for sale online, but just picture flutes that said “Mr.” and “Mrs.” on them.

After going ’round and ’round, and stopping to think about some Kate Spade Toasting flutes, we found ourselves at a different Carson’s so I could look at the Ribbons again.

And then, something amazing happened. See, Mama Giraffe got the Mikasa Cheers Wine Glasses as a Christmas gift (a set of 4), and she loved them so much that she purchased a second set. They’re so cute, and I love them too…and I saw the Real Housewives of OC use them in an episode a few weeks ago. Ahem. Well, when we were at Carson’s, the Cheers set was on display and I got so excited and called Mama G over. I pointed out all the cute serving platters and pitchers and glasses that matched her wine glasses.

Mama G got all excited and said, “Look! They have champagne glasses! You could use those as flutes!”

As I turned to look at the glasses, my heart skipped a beat, because next to them were the most perfect toasting glasses I’d ever seen.

Aren’t you just in love?! I know! I cannot wait to toast with these babies! I cannot believe that after going to a billion stores and worrying that I wouldn’t find flutes I love, that these ending up right in front of me. Who would’ve thought?

Oh, and because I like to play this game in my head sometimes, if I were super rich (you know you play the game too!), I would buy a ton of these (matching!) Mikasa Cheers Celebration glasses for the reception, and have everyone toast with them!

Now you’re probably wondering why, after I nixed so many glasses that didn’t have making cutters, what I decided to do. The Mikasa Cheers set does not have a cake server and cutter, but I ordered this one (and paid an extra $5 to get it here on time - oops) from The Wedding Outlet and am having our names and date engraved on the server. After looking and so so so many fancy cutters, I know that this simpler one is perfect for us.

It’s funny, because originally, I had no interest in flutes or servers. I just figured I’d use whatever the venue had for us to use…but then, and this is funny, I thought about how the cave server from my parents’ wedding is in a drawer in our kitchen at home. We use it for birthdays and Christmases and all kinds of things. That’s something I want down the road, y’know—little reminders of this big day. :)

Phew. That ends the long (and exhausting) saga of finding flutes. But, hey, it was worth it in the end. :)

What are you toasting with at your wedding?

we will be using Waterford’s “Happy Celebrations”. Waterford has been a family tradition and these flutes are my very first piece that won’t be my grandmother’s pattern. They were a gift from my FFIL and his gf. Sidenote: our cake topped is also from Waterford.

We also got a set of flutes from my aunt & uncle from Galway crystal that have a Claddagh on them that are beautiful too.

And then… we got a pair of handpainted flutes with roses on them from friends of ours. So many pretty choices.

So cute - I love these! We’re just toasting with beer or wine that is in-hand, but i did register for some pretty, simple cut-glass Vera Wang flutes.

Macy’s had a sale on the Martha Stewart Trousseau Collection, so I picked up the flutes, the cake knives, and a frame. For our wedding we received the vase and another frame. Pretty stuff, nice prices.

For anyone else having trouble, give Things Remembered a try! (I work there, but I’m not plugging… not that it isn’t a great discount for me during my wedding planning!)
They have about 15 different flutes, most with matching cake knife/servers. I chose the Juliet cut crystal flutes (sale, $40) and the Suspended Sparkle servers (sale, $40) and I’m only having minimal engraving done because that’s just my style. I LOVE that these can be used for occasions after the wedding because they don’t scream BRIDAL!

Yeah I used to work at Things Remembered and they have some gorgeous wedding flutes and serving sets there. One thing though - the metallic ones DO tarnish, even if the people in the store tell you otherwise, so stick to ones that are mostly glass or non-metal materials.

My favorite of the Things Remembered flutes = the Park Avenue ones. Sooo pretty! But I know that much detail isn’t for everyone, haha.

I love the flutes you are going with! If we were doing a champagne toast I would definitely use them :)
We are actually doing a jello shot toast… I ordered personalized glass shot glasses which will also double as the favor!

We’re getting super fun champagne flutes from Fizzy Artist on Etsy that will have a drawing of each of us, our names, and wedding date. We didn’t care much about the cake serving set, especially since my parents’ set has remained in a box ever since they used it, so I thought it would be a waste of money. I never considered that other families might use it for birthdays and other occasions - what a nice idea! We’re going to use my parents’ cake serving set that’s engraved with their names from 1978 :)

I love all of the last four of those, so beautiful and all in different ways.

We are going with vintage champagne glasses, the flatter ones. I have been scouring antique stores and thrift stores for more than a year.

We also used flutes from things remembered, and just had our new monogram and the date engraved, I wanted it fairly simple. We had a rose-colored champagne for our toast, which made for beautiful color photos and our photographer got a great black and white closeup photo of the flutes, too, where you can see the engraving, I have it framed.

We used my parents’ cake knife which felt nice on that day, to know it was the same one my parents had held in their hands 35 years ago, and it was something that my mom really appreciated, too.

We found some with a single Stephnotis flower in bisque porcelain on them, along with a cake knife and server.
