About Mrs. Lox

For the Love of Little Children

May 6th, 2011 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Lox

So as I’ve mentioned a few times before, there will, in fact, be children at our wedding. We could go over tons of reasons why and why not to have children at a wedding. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer or decision there. We decided to let them be there because I simply hated the idea that someone we love would miss our wedding because they couldn’t find a babysitter. So there it is. Children will be there.

That doesn’t mean I like the idea of bored kids running around, making noise at inappropriate times, or photobombing us. I do like the idea of kids dancing, having fun, and not being bored so their parents have to leave early. So, dear hive, what is the best way to keep children from getting bored? Give them something to do! This was the one project Mr. Lox has wanted since we first started wedding planning. And since he really hasn’t asked for much throughout this process, he was always destined to get his way here. So I started dreaming up ideas for activities for the children.

And we came up with this…

For the Love of Little Children : wedding baltimore favors kids Dsc014641 Children’s Activity Bag

Starting with the bag and going clockwise, these have:

  • A mini tote personalized with each child’s name – I made these using the same instructions as the monogrammed totes, but I cut out each individual letter so it wouldn’t be weird. Girl’s name are in pink, boy’s names are in orange. ( I am NOT forgetting this again. The totes were purchased from Amazon.)
  • A little plastic slinky
  • A small container of Play Doh
  • One of our ribbon wands
  • A coloring/activity book – This was made from a template passed on to me by our very own hive member SarahLynne. I changed the names to ours, printed it out, punched holes, and tied it up with ribbon.
  • Crayons
  • A mini puzzle – This one was only for the older kids as it’s not really younger kid friendly.

So, it’s not huge nor is it chock full of goodies. However, I’m hoping it’s enough to keep the children occupied when they get bored of dancing and hopefully keep their parents around for a little while longer!

Are you having children at your wedding? Did you come up with a plan to keep them occupied and happy?

We did goodie bags for kids also, but included some food - raisins, pretzels, and a granola bar. I knew there would be at least an hour between showing up at the park and getting to eat after the ceremony, so I didn’t want them pestering their parents because they were hungry. (we made sure all of the food packaging wasn’t loud so it wouldn’t disturb the ceremony)

LOL Squeaky, Thats what I was about to write, you need some snacks and maybe juice boxes or Capri sun, most little boys like matchbox cars. Another good thing is gummy chews or bubble gum-keeps little mouths busy!

These are perfect! Bookmarking now so I won’t be pulling my hair out in four months wondering what to do to appease/quiet the children. When do you plan on handing them out? Before the ceremony?

Our event coordinator recommended we have a kids activity table since we were having a bunch of children at our event. We bought a huge stack of cardstock and crayons and tubs of foam stickers in all different shapes (totally on sale at the craft store). Turned out to be the hit of the night with the bonus of the kids presenting us with the artwork they made for us all night long. The parents were thrilled the kids were occupied, the kids were thrilled to have something to do during dinner, and i was thrilled to not be the one cleaning up all the sticker backings that were all over the floor.

I too couldn’t bear the thought of excluding children from our wedding, so I decided to devote one table to the kiddies. We bought miniature versions of our favorite toys to put on the table. Mini 8 balls, small slinkys, wooly willy, bubbles, and rock ‘em sock ‘em bopper rings. I found all of them half off at wal-mart just after easter. We also plan to cover their table with kraft paper instead of a tablecloth and the centerpiece will be a vase similar to the others, but chock full of crayons. I am also hoping to get an ‘art piece’ out of them. :)

@MissPony: Our ceremony and reception were all in one place at a park, so the escort cards (pinwheels) were out on a table for the guests before the ceremony and we had the kids’ bags there.

@SqueakySquirrel: @pinkdiamonddolly: These are actually not being given to the children until the reception. So I don’t know that food is really needed. Besides, I know my friends will have things their children like on hand.

@Miss Pony: I’m having them placed on the tables in the receptin where the children are sitting. I’m planning on the parents taking care of any issues during the ceremony.

@Ayslinn87: Activity book is sent! Hope that helps.

@crystalirene: I use Gimp to edit graphics, so I don’t know how helpful this is. But I created all of the names as images in Gimp. Then I reversed the text layer using an option under the “Transform” option to “Flip Horizontally”. Hopefully your program has something similar.

@k: @shlee: A table is a great idea but just wasn’t in the cards for us.

@vintagemodernbride: The activity book was emailed to me. I’m happy to send it along if you (or anyone for that matter!) wants to PM me your email address. :)

We’re going to sit all of the older children (so 5-ish and up) at their own tables, which we are stocking with crayons and covering in butcher paper so everyone can color during dinner and beyond. I suppose this works better for us than some because most of the kiddos are my young cousins so it will mostly be kids that know each other. I think it might work even if the children weren’t acquainted yet though, if you could have one of the parents host a game with the kids so they get used to playing with each other. That sort of thing might fit perfectly in the time between the ceremony and reception where you’re still taking pictures…

you’re so good, loxy. and your totes are so marvelous, i’m not so secretly jealous bc this was my one big wedding fail :(
we showered our kiddos with a few gifts too - these sparkle star wands for the girls, water spouting sea critter toys for the boys…and beach critter stickers for all. in the end, they were more obsessed with the parasols and the fingerprint tree…go figure! :)
