The wedding toasts were the more sentimental part of the evening. My father kicked it off with a welcome to our guests and he thanked everyone for coming. He also went on to talk about the story of when Mr. Starfish and I began dating. My family often shares the story that I was ready to leave the school I now rave about, one month into my freshman year. I had transfer papers in and I was ready to leave. Then a few weeks after I gave them the first call, I called back to let them know I changed my mind.

They later had a sneaky suspicion Mr. Starfish had something to do with it, seeing as I changed my mind the month we met. My father’s speech became more sentimental and personal, and to my surprise he even got a bit flustered and lost his page. This was pretty surprising as he is a great speaker; I think the emotions got to him, so I helped him find it.

It was a speech filled with love and laughs.

After Starfish Dad’s moving speech, it was on to Sister Starfish. She actually repeated a story from my speech at her wedding just the year before. I spoke of how much I looked up to her and how she protected me. She shared that over the past year I had been the one supporting her. She shared many beautiful thoughts about our relationship.

It was extremely heartfelt and sweet.

I think she also recalled the phone call back in the day that I was magically in love with Salve out of nowhere and was no longer transferring (in other words, I was in love with Mr. Starfish and no longer transferring).

Lastly came BIL Starfish’s speech.

He shared what it was like to be a guy coming into the Starfish family. Many people forget that Mr. Starfish came along first, so he reminded the crowd of this. He said he would welcome Mr. S into the fam, but he had been here long before.

He also shared some memorable Mr. Starfish moments, which were hilarious.

It was everything a speech should be. It was filled with love and humor and sentiment. He and Mr. Starfish have become like brothers and his speech definitely shared that.

The speeches are pretty cool to hear at your wedding. It’s not often people get up to toast you, so it’s definitely something to remember. If you don’t have a videographer, ask your friends for a copy of their speech.

Sister Starfish’s videographer never showed, so I’m creating a scrapbook and asked all the people who spoke for copies to include. These are definitely moments you don’t want to forget.
