Mane Tails

May 6th, 2011 @ 12:58 pm by Ms. Gazelle

Once I figured that a wedding might be on the horizon, I decided it was time to start growing out my hair. For the last few years I have kept my hair around the same length, varying within an inch or two and resting around my shoulders.

My hair is super fine and I really didn’t know how to deal with it, so I mostly wore it in a ponytail all the time. As my hair has gotten longer, I’ve tried to branch out and learn how to do new things with it. I’ve learned how to do a top knot/sock bun:

I’ve been playing around with curling my hair and figuring out how to create waves with a flat iron:

I’ve been trying to embrace my hair as it has been getting longer:

With all of this extra styling I’ve been doing, I’ve also been trying to take care of my hair. Gotta watch out for those split ends!

What are the tips I’ve picked up along the way?

Getting regular trims is a good thing! My stylist helps to keep the ends in check and only trims the tiniest amount possible. She also helps to confirm that my hair is still in great condition as it gets longer.

A heat protectant is a great item to have in your arsenal. I really like Tresemme’s Heat Protection Spray. It doesn’t cost much, and you can spray it on both wet and dry hair. Spray before you blow dry, then spray again before you curl.

I’ve also been learning not to wash my hair every day. This is a big one. A few months back I would have told you that my hair had to be washed every day. It gets oily, my scalp gets itchy, and the only way to deal with it if I haven’t washed it is to put it in a ponytail.

Not washing your hair every day takes a bit of time and patience to get your scalp used to it. With the help of a good dry shampoo you can keep your hair looking and feeling fresh. I’ve tried out Tresemme’s Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, which made my hair feel oilier. I also tried out TIGI’s Rockaholic Dry Shampoo, which worked fairly well but it is also quite expensive. Honestly, the best I have tried so far is plain and simple baby powder:

If you are looking for tips on how to extend your time between hair washes yet still keep your locks looking great, I highly recommend checking out Veronika’s Blushing. Her blog post is so informative!

Have you got any great hair-care tips to share? Are you going to great lengths to keep your hair healthy if you are trying to grow it out?

Ok, you’re going to have to explain the baby powder! I’ve tried to cut down on my hair-washing as well and am doing every other day now - but the second day I always wear my hair up because it doesn’t exactly look its best. I’m thinking about getting a conditioning/gloss treatment from a salon, does anyone have experience with this?

This post could have been written based on my same experiences! Trying to grow my hair out, less washing, use the Tresemme product & baby powder is my favorite secret :) Woop woop!

I totally have the same kind of hair as you…and am worried about it looking all thin and wimpy at my wedding. My hair guy is totally going to put in extra hair to my bun, and I am really pleased with the quality of “falls” these days. (MY mom always called them that! Anyway, I was writing to tell you about the best dry shampoo I have tried…Jonathan Product - Green Rootine. You can get it in different shades to match your hair. Baby Powder alwasy makes my roots look too write. The product is all natural with no parabens and animal testing too. Very improtant to me!! :)

Try the Suave Dry Shampoo. It’s less than $2 a container and works better than any of the expensive products I’ve tried. It smells good too. I have really thick, heavy hair and this gives my hair great body too.

Thanks for posting about dry shampoo! I’ve been in the market for a product to use while in field school (my prof informs us that we’ll get 2 showers a week, maybe- and they’ll be cold)

Yep, this post is SO me too! I’ve gone from daily washings to twice a week and my hair is so much less oily and itchy because of it! Thanks for putting to word out that the best way to combat the greasies is to wash less, not more!

Ive been taking fish oil pills and that has seemed to help alot w/ the texture of my hair. it is not near as dry and it also helps you hair grow!

Your hair looks so pretty (probably cause you take such good care of it). I’m afraid my skin will freak out if I don’t wash it everyday, did you have any skin repercussions as a result of your new routine?

Please stop with the baby powder! That will build up in your hair and on your skin after a while, not good!

I recommend using a clarifying shampoo if you have product build up. If you have oily hair it could be that you either have an overly oily scalp, or you actually have a dry damaged scalp and your skin is trying to help itself. In this case, go to your nearest salon, get a consultation about what to do. They will most likely recommend a ph balancing shampoo to get your scalp back on track.

Dry shampoos… are a saving grace for those days when you do not have time for a shower! I recommend Big Sexy Hair’s Dry Volumizing shampoo. It is one of two that I know that is not a coloured powder/white in appearance. It is clear! Others are very clay based which is why you see a white build up on the hair. Spray this near your roots on the top of your hair, your part etc… the places you see oil build up. Let it sit for a bit. Then brush it through. Your hair will feel dry because of it. But it is also doing its job. This stuff also hugely helps if you are a die hard back comber and want big hair!

Adding my $.02 to say that I have the exact same hair as you, and I have also recently tried to cut down on the shampooing. My stylist had tried to convince me for years to do this, but I always resisted because my whole head is just greasy. What he told me is to only shampoo every other day, but to rinse and condition every day. Since I started doing this, my hair is definitely in much better condition, and although I can tell the difference in my second day hair, other people can’t.

I also second (third?) the Suave dry shampoo suggestion. Cheap and effective!

I use dry shampoo in a pinch (some british product from duane read) but I also have been alternating my regular shampoo and conditioner with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. It is supposed to keep more of the natural oils in your hair.

I also follow what anvil_chick said. Every once and a while I wash with a Ph balanced shampoo (a johnson’s baby shampoo)

I’ve been thinking really hard about not washing my hair everyday and just using a good dry shampoo. You’ve inspired me to take the plunge!

Miss G - your hair looks so great! thanks for the awesome tips… i’m so ready to try the dry shampoo route, too. :) as a girl with looong hair, i’d say the frequent trims and a great conditioner have been my saving graces.

I’ve always done the washing less often, and I’ve found that second day hair is easiest to style, but for me it gets a little too oily by the third day.

I also have a hard time with not washing every day… I feel like I look so greasy if I don’t!

I’m in the same boat as Miss Hyena: no matter what I try, if I don’t wash my hair every day it just looks greasy! I have friends who swear by washing every other day, though, and their hair looks great!
