Love It or Lose It?

May 6th, 2011 @ 9:43 am by Mrs. Pony

For me, the most memorable parts of a wedding are those that truly represent the couple. Whether that means dressing up your penguin pal in his finest so he can make an appearance on your big day:

Or letting your personality completely shine through for all your guests (and photographers) to witness:

Incorporating these personal touches is of the utmost importance to me for our wedding. While I love a great many things (I’m a lover—what can I say?), not everything I love (…we love, whatever) can be crammed into the wedding festivities. So, throughout the planning process I have focused on incorporating a select few of our favorite things that mean the most to us, are cost effective, and fit the overall feel of our wedding and venues.

I am going to share some of our favorite things that we plan to incorporate into our wedding in upcoming posts, but here are some things that I love that will (sadly) not be making it into our wedding day.

Polka Dots:

Oh, I heart polka dots. They are so versatile. They can be retro, fun, stylish, or sophisticated. But, unfortunately, polka dots don’t mesh with the rather formal character of our reception venue (or so I am told). So, we are going to forgo polka-dotting it up at the reception. But I might slip them into another wedding event.

Bunting:

When I see bunting, I see a playful, fun party atmosphere. When Mr. Pony sees bunting, he sees a used car lot, so this potential project was scrapped from the beginning. I’m not that sad to lose this project, though, because I also see a lot of work cutting, sewing, and stringing things together. But again, if I can manage it, I would love to work a less labor-intensive version of bunting into our rehearsal dinner or day-after brunch.

Cafe lights:

It was a sad day when I learned we could not hang anything from the ceiling at our venue. I have coveted those cafe lights from the first moment my eyes ever saw them featured on a wedding blog. I absolutely love the romance and ambiance these lights give to a space. In picking our reception venue, I was aware of their restrictions on hanging decorations from the ceiling, but my heart still flutters when I see pictures of weddings using these fabulous lights. Maybe someday when I have a backyard…

Fun socks:

A wall of socks—my personal heaven (personal photo)

To say I love socks is an understatement. Since high school I have loved wearing fun socks. Plain socks are so boring and monotonous, but a pair of fun socks always makes my day a little better. My collection spans virtually all major holidays, seasons, and interests. On our wedding day, however, I won’t be wearing any of my beloved socks. Instead, I am going to live vicariously through Mr. Pony and his groomsmen by forcing on them giving them an awesome pair of fun, colorful socks to wear.

Did you have to sacrifice things you love in order to match the other elements of your wedding? How did you make those decisions? Does anyone else love fun socks like me? If so, let’s compare collections!

I looooooove cheese, but, alas, it is not making an appearance at our wedding. It was not until we finalized our menu that I realized this. Doh!

Maybe you can do bunting at the rehearsal dinner, or a shower? We’re planning to use it at our engagement party (using Mrs. Stripes adorable mini-bunting so I don’t have to sew) since it’s a little more whimsical than our wedding will be.

I don’t have any fun socks, but I really liked seeing Mr. E in a pair for the wedding.

I wanted my husband to wear fun argyle socks but he said no way. Afterwards he saw pictures of other guys at weddings and then said he would have done it but it was too late.

We both capital-L-Love fondue and I have so been trying to find a way to squeeze it into our wedding day. But alas, I think it will have to fall by the wayside.

@Miss Waffle: Sad! Cheese is the greatest. You might not even miss it with all the other good foods at your reception!
@toshella: I would love to, if I have time. My BMs are doing my shower and I don’t want to impose too much on their plans, ya know?
@Mrs. Elephant: No fun socks? Girl, I’m going to have to send you some. I’ll look for elephant socks now…
@kaybee: Lame! Fun socks are the greatest, he totally missed out.
@Ms. Ferris Wheel: That would be so awesome to include! Most of my favorite foods were nixed too in the name of convenience and pleasing the most amount of people (wtf?). Def eat it on your honeymoon!

I totally had to let go of the polka dots!! Those are the one thing Mr. G was really against. What’s up with that?!

Though not a tangible “thing,” I had thought of all these neat songs I could walk down the aisle to - if I heard a great one, I would make a mental note of it, etc.

We just picked our venue recently, and…the “aisle” is REALLY short. My guess is that it will take MAYBE fifteen seconds to walk down. (The guests will be seated in a sort-of-semicircle around it). So, I will need to scrap all my cool song ideas and come up with a cute “snippet!”

It makes me want to plan other people’s weddings, because I would have SUCH GOOD IDEAS for them. Ha! :-)

P.S. Your line “A wall of socks—my personal heaven” made me crack up!!

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we had to sacrifice a chocolate fountain. Major bummer, because I freaking love chocolate fountains!

Cafe lights were on our list of things that didn’t make it, too. It was such a sad day when I learned that we couldn’t hang things from the ceiling in our venue!
