This past winter, something bad happened to this:

My husband bought this ring from Etsy seller Single b. and proposed to me with it. I adored it. I certainly wore it every day. Then one horrible cold day I looked down to see this:

My stone was gone! Tears! I searched for hours, but no dice. After the initial sadness, I got pretty pissed that my ring pulled a Kamikaze less than a year after purchase. I emailed the seller, SingleB, and the best I got from her was, “I’m actually not terribly surprised that this happened, although I am sorry that it happened, I’m sure you were very disappointed. But sterling silver isn’t terribly durable and I never intended for that ring to be worn every day as a wedding ring. It has a thin band and I’m sure it has deformed slightly from wear, and that would loosen the setting. I would be glad to give you a refund however, if you would like to send the setting back to me. Let me know if you want to send it back and I will give you my address.”
Well, in my opinion, if you knew up front that my husband was proposing with this ring, why didn’t you tell him this in the first place? Why sell me a piece of jewelry that will fall apart in 11 months? That just doesn’t make sense. While I appreciate her offer of a refund, that’s not what I had in mind. I was hoping that I could get the ring reworked, and possibly get a metal “stone” welded in so I can at least have something other than a gaping hole in the center should I choose to wear it for sentimentality’s sake from time to time. I understand now that I should have expected there to be an issue, but I’ve had dozens of silver James Avery rings holding their gemstones safe for years, so it just never crossed my mind to worry about it. With those shenanigans out of the way, I scored a great deal from JCPenney during the Christmas season. A gorgeous aquamarine and silver ring for a cool $65.
What could go wrong? Well, apparently, everything. I ordered it on December 27, and the months dragged on with nary a sight of a shipping date. According to customer service, this was a direct-from-warehouse item, and it was out of stock. It was out of stock for over three months! Geez Louise! After several angry calls to JCP inquiring as to why the eff they would advertise and sell jewelry they don’t even keep in stock, I just gave up and canceled my order. Which was totally perfect, because last month on a visit to see my parents in Wimberley, Mr. SD and I stumbled across a stunning local jeweler. And I finally have a new wedding ring!

Love. Love, love LOVE!! It’s just as unique and original as the first ring I fell in love with. And best of all, they guarantee all the stones and their settings, so if something ever happens to it, I know that it will actually get fixed. I forget all the fancy schmancy details, but I do know that the stones are opals from Australia, and it’s set in silver and the whole shebang is coated in palladium to seal it all in and protect it from damage. Nice! The best part is how the colors shift from blue to green when the lighting changes.

Swoon. Here’s a shot showing the detailing on the sides.

Best of all? It arrived on our one-year anniversary! How awesome is that? I’m so happy, Mr. SD is happy, and we both love it. And now we both feel confident that it will last for years.
