Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
About Mrs. Barrettes

Hi Hive! You don’t mind if I do drive-bys every now and again, right? Promise I’ll drop by when I think I’ve got something good for ya. Today I’m thinking about wedding photography… six months after the wedding.

Photography quickly rose to the top of my list of important things when we began planning. I knew I wanted something special, but I didn’t know exactly what. Unless you are used to working with photographers on a pretty regular basis, most of us just know what we like when we see it. When I stumbled upon Luke’s work, I just knew he was the one. It was sort of like falling in love at first sight.

Then you find the price for your dream. And it’s usually higher than you hoped for.

To fit the constraints of budget, the only way to make my make my 2-shooter, 8-hour fantasy happen was to cut out the album option. My high-quality images would land in my lap on 2 discs, about 8GB worth of our gorgeous day. Luke also included web-ready images, which were much smaller and included his watermark. This made recapping our wedding pretty easy breezy, but now it’s all up to me to figure out how to present my photos outside of the internet.

Uploading the high-res images to photobook sites became frustrating when I learned that most hosts don’t allow images over 10 MB—almost all of my images are over 20 MB.

That’s huge. Luckily I was able to resize in Adobe Fireworks, but silly me then resized almost 100 images a little too small. *facepalm* So frustrating!

I tried uploading my resized photos to Picasa to use them inside of Blurb, but then Picasa—without rhyme or reason—continued to act up and reject my photos, causing me to almost throw my computer across the room. So I did what any good Apple user does—I turned to iPhoto to make my album.

Omigod, y’all, it was so easy! There was no uploading and crossing my fingers it would work. I just dragged and dropped and changed layouts at will and iPhoto let me know if the photo size was too small to print well. The full-page photos are the only ones I used the super high-res images for. The hardest part was choosing which photos to include and trying to restrain myself from hitting the “new page” button too many times. I will report back on the quality when I see the finished product.

Photography editing is no walk in the park, even if you do have appropriate software. It takes a lot of patience and time and if you are short on both, think about adding the album options to your photography package. While at the time you think you will be able to work that out yourself, sometimes it’s best left to the professionals!

Have you made an Apple photobook? How did it turn out for you?

I haven’t gotten to that point yet, but since I’m a graphic designer I may be making my own album too. Although my photographer is a friend of my cousin’s and since I’m paying for her to fly up for the wedding she’s giving me a $500 album credit. Very tempting to just use the credit and have someone else do the layouts for a change! And by the way, your photos are beautiful! We’re using purple for our wedding too and looking at your photos, I’m glad we are. :)

I hadn’t ever thought about cheaper album companies having file size limits! D’oh! Good call, Mrs. B! That’s something I’ll have to keep in mind when we start to put ours together…

I am sooo glad that you posted this. I am having the same dilemma of wanting all-day coverage but not being able to afford much else! I was worried about only having the photos on a CD but now that I know iPhoto is so handy it makes me love my Mac even more! Now, I can book a photographer without worries. How do you plan to print the images though? I am thinking I may have to send them to the local Wal-Mart and print them there. Please keep me posted on the final project!

We skipped the album credit also and kept many of those same requirements you had. I wanted complete control of the album(s) and did not want to drive our sweet photographer nuts with all the ensuing back and forth.

Good advice, Mrs. Barettes! I plan on doing this with ours too, hopefully it will be as easy as you say! :-)

I haven’t made an iPhoto book yet, the company that prints every iPhoto book is near where I go to school! All of us printing students took a field trip there, and they are really nice– so you’re in good hands! I would love to see the pics of the final book when you get it!

@AlmostMrsB: I was able to upload many of my 300kb photos to picasa, so I can order prints from there, but I’ll probably just take a thumb drive to a printer and do them there.

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: Yes– good point! I love having full control over what goes into the albums without anyone else’s imput. :)

That is awesome! We too are getting our photography done without the album option (3k! omg!) so I’m really interested in seeing how yours turns out. Definitely share the finished product, if you’re okay with that. :)

Thanks for this post! My photography package does not include an album either. My photographer told me I could always order one at a later date. But I was wondering whether I would be able to make an album on my own. Thanks for telling us what worked for you!

One of the first things I did once I received my photos was play around with iPhoto. I was so happy with how easy it was to use. The hardest part was deciding what photo to put where!

I’m just starting to familiarize myself with the iPhoto software, so this is a super timely post! Your album layouts look fantastic!

I’ve made several iPhoto books in the past for various events in my life. They come out really nice!

I’m planning on making mine through Black River Imaging. I want one really fancy one for myself, and I’ll probably make iPhoto books for the parents. BRI has professional-quality books for what I consider pretty reasonable prices, and unlike a lot of the professional-quality companies they do not require you to be a professional photographer to use their website. Just in case anyone else is looking for a way to make a flush-mount album on their own!

Oh, I’m excited to hear how this turns out! Even though it’ll be a while until we’re ready to think albums, I hadn’t really thought about iPhoto as an option (for shame… I’m a die-hard Mac!). Glad to hear it was so easy!

Love the post! My fiance works for Apple so we love our Mac’s and all the wonderful programs that come with them. iPhoto is a dream to use! I have built books and calendars, both are great quality! Way better than other sights like shutterfly or snapfish!

For those interested in printing single photos I would greatly recommend Mpix dot com. They use professional paper and printing methods. We have gotten a lot of wall photos mounted and framed by this company any the quality is outstanding for a great price! We also got our engagement photos printed by them, the metallic paper is totally awesome for the right kinds of photos!

Oy… now I have the whole file size-photo uploading thing to add to my list of stressors! I’m glad you found a way around it, B!

I want an apple sooo bad!! My laptop doesn’t have this program, unfortunately, so I’m not sure where to turn for albums yet!! Thanks for this tip, though! Yet another reason I have to get one!! Pics look great, BTW!

Thanks for the post-mortem on photography; I’m finding the posts from the married bees to be insightful and are helping me to decide what really IS important for that One.Important.Day.

I had the exact same experience when making our parents albums. iPhoto is so easy and wonderful to use, and they came out great! Now I’m regretting paying $2K for a wedding album when I could have just made one on iPhoto (granted, it wouldn’t be of the same quality, but yeah).

I hope you do lots of drive-bys! I already miss your recaps desperately! Can you only use iPhoto if you have a Mac?
