Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

My initial hesitancy to embark upon the STD journey was mostly budget related. I viewed STDs as excessive and unnecessary; I could cut them out and save everyone a bit of cash, time, and energy. However, now that they’re nothing but a memory, I’ve looked back upon the process to realize that it was surprisingly low key and low budget. So, in the hopes of helping another bride-to-be figure out if STDs are in her budget, here are a few tips I picked up along the way.

1) If using Vistaprint, don’t pay for the postcards! They run those periodic sales that you can have pop up in your email inbox if you so desire. Or you can turn to Google and search for something like “Vistaprint free postcards” and get them for free whenever you please! It seems like they are always trying to lure in new customers, so with a little bit of legwork you can get your hands on a good deal even when it isn’t advertised across the entire website. I don’t know if this is always the case, but the free-postcard promotion I used also entitled me to 50% off upload fees, which also helps you save a couple buckaroos!

2) If using postcards, don’t bother paying for color back-side printing. The back side probably contains “boring” information like the guest’s address and some short greeting from the bride and groom. The majority of people who plan to display your STDs will show the side with the fun text, picture, calendar, whatever. The difference in cost between color printing and gray-scale printing on the back side was only about four dollars, but when you’re looking to save every penny you can, it’s something to keep in mind.

3) One hundred postcards not enough? Utilize Vistaprint’s “reorder” function. Once you’ve set up an account on the site and ordered your first batch of free postcards, log back in and search for your recent orders. When looking at your previously ordered products, there should be a prominently featured button that says “reorder”—this function allows you to purchase the exact same product in the exact same quantity and only pay for printing/shipping. In other words, you don’t need to pay for a second round of uploading fees in order to get your hands on 100 more. Even better news? As long as you pay attention to what’s in your cart, you can successfully use the free-postcard promotion for your second batch of 100. If you do this, you only have to pay for shipping, yet again!

4) Don’t bother paying for accelerated shipping. I opted for the slowest mode possible, which is supposed to take up to 21 business days. Apparently “21 business days” is code for “four business days.” I had the postcards in hand very promptly both times I ordered!

Overall Cost Breakdown

  • Postcards, first order (includes shipping and uploading): $13.48
  • Postcards, second order (just shipping): $9.50
  • Stamps (130 postcard stamps): $36.40
  • Corner rounder (reusable, purchased with a ubiquitous Michaels coupon): about $8.00

Grand total: $67.38 for 130 postcards—just over 50 cents per STD (and more than 50% of this per-STD cost was postage alone!)

Plus, I have 70 postcards left over! Sure, I won’t be able to use them for anything beyond bookmarks and mementos, but “buying” another batch of 100 free postcards was significantly less expensive than buying a smaller batch of 25 or 50. It also gave me the peace of mind I so greatly needed to dabble in corner rounding, knowing I could make a mistake (or 70!) and still be good to go.

Even though I was hesitant at the beginning, I’m really glad we opted to do the STDs!

Did you learn any great money-saving tips while doing your own wedding mailers?

@kitty: HAHAHAHA.

My STDs were also very budget friendly. I hadn’t really thought of it, but they were probably my cheapest wedding purchase :). Yay for cheap things!

The STD Postcards were so cheap and easy. we opted to buy vintage looking ones and use an alphabet stamp on the back to add all the necessary info and that made the total cost SO CHEAP. Great tips, S!

I would be hesitant to use VistaPrint. Google Vistaprint Scam and you’ll see what I mean!

On the VistaPrint front, I have always been very happy with them. My stuff always gets to me withing 7-10 days, even when I select the slowest shipping option (and always pick the slowest option, unless you’re in a super rush). I think they currently have several items for free if you use http://www.vistaprint.com/spring2011 I don’t know if its the same as their winter2011 discount, but I got all of my wedding invites, response cards (post cards), tote bags for me, mother, fmil, 4 bridesmaids, hats for my dad, bridesdude and ffil, pens, notebooks, note pade, sticky notes, two mugs, a couple of stickers, two t-shirts and things I think I’m forgetting and return address labels for UNDER 100 dollars because I only had to pay shipping. And I’m happy with ALL of it.

One caveat to this is that I had to do them in separate orders because the discounts available from that url allow for one of each item

Love this post, since we’re going to use VistaPrint. I also love it because that first pic looks like my engagement ring. A girl after my own heart :)

Haha my FI and I weren’t going to do STDs either because I didn’t want to spend the money. But the free vista print postcards lured me in, too! Now I love our STDs and I’m so glad we have made them!
