Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

I Never Can Predict…

May 10th, 2011 @ 2:42 pm by Mrs. Magic

I never can predict what it is Mr. Magic will have an opinion about or not.

Me: Hey honey, do you care what kind of cake topper we get?

Mr. M: What?

Me: [exasperated, because I hate to repeat myself] I said, do you care what kind of cake topper we get?

Mr. M: Well yeah, I don’t want something stupid.

Me: OK, so do you want, like, a mini us on there?

Mr. M: No, something else.

Me: OK, what about [types "bunting wedding cake topper" into search engine] this?

Mr. M: What is that? Is that even a cake? I don’t like that.

Me: OK, what about this then. [pulls up original idea I was lusting after] They can make them look just like us!!!

Mr. M: Sure, that’s fine.

Me: It’s kinda expensive though…

Mr. M: How much?

Me: [really quietly] like, one hundred and seventy five dollars

Mr. M: Seventy five dollars?

Me: [exasperated because I hate repeating myself] NO, ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FIVE DOLLARS.

Mr. M: [very matter of fact like] That is outrageous.

Me: It’s one of a kind! It’s custom made! It’s handcrafted! It will look JUST LIKE US!

This was actually a humorous conversation, to me, and I wasn’t really all that exasperated, although I do really, really dislike repeating myself. But isn’t it funny what our significant others choose to care about? I really can never, ever tell what will make his list, and truthfully, I don’t think he really cares what is on our cake…as long as it isn’t “stupid.”

Has your significant other had an opinion about things that surprised you?

I thought it was really funny how much my FI cared about the STDs. He really did not want a photo of us on them, and was SO PICKY about the font choice. SHEESH! Go watch ESPN or something….

Hahaha, I was shocked when Mr TM had all these opinions about things I never thought he gave a crap about! And honestly, it was super-annoying bc I just wanted to do what I wanted to do, haha!

So true! My fiance was very adamant that our reception venue had to have high ceilings. I was like “really? you are concerned about the ceilings?”

I think it is funny that when I ask for an opinion I don’t often get one but then they come out of nowhere when I least expect it. Like when we were picking out wedding bands, I planned to get a single band and FI fell in love with a set of double bands and insisted they looked the best! Before shopping I couldn’t even get him to look at different styles for his own ring.

this is too funny! my FI tells me the exact thing “as long as it’s not stupid” or something like ” it’s not tacky, it’s so confusing what he really like :)

I was baffled when my FI, after looking at pictures of flowers, demanded that if I put any twigs in our centerpieces he would be very angry!!!

I dont know what they are called but I love the little “stemms” with yellow tiny flowers all up them. There is something similiar in white that would work great for us and is cost effective - but NO he thinks they look like twigs and hates them!

Men!!!

There are other personalized cake figurines for way cheaper. These clay ones are just $20-$45.

oh wait, I read the fine print on the descriptions. The usual price, they say, is $75. But that’s still much cheaper.

Magic - you never fail to make me crack up (at work in my cube…) Anyway, had to respond to this one - my husband would constantly respond to my wedding ideas with something similar to “what is that? is that even a cake?” LOL. This post represents like one of 5,000 conversations I had with my fiance during wedding planning!

My husband was very anti-veil. I let him have that one :-). And I think $175 for a cake topper is pretty crazy, too. You’d never buy that in non-wedding land!! Remember that!!

I hate repeating myself too. So annoying. And bunting cake toppers are amazing.

I worked on our guest list adamantly for 2 months. I asked so many times for his opinion and ran a ton of names by him, but his responses were vague and uninterested, so I enlisted the help of his mom to finish my list. A few months later, I told him I ran into an old friend and wanted to add her to the list, and he flipped his lid, asking me if I had considered any of his friends, extended family, etc… uh hello, the list was done months ago!!

Everything. Type of tuxes, cake topper, cake, music, ceremony, table names, rehearsal dinner, dress code (for the reception and rehearsal dinner), my veil, my hair, what the girls are wearing, the programs, the dances, pretty much everything- except the cake cutter/server, neither really care about that (we’re using my parents’ evidently)

OOOH that bunting cake is so cute! I bet FI would think it was silly too, though. :( Maybe for a shower cake down the line..

That is so funny. I ALSO hate repeating myself and always do it. I have this exact kind of conversation…and my FI is opinionated about every part of the wedding too, even though he pretends he doesn’t care.
