About Ms. Gazelle

A Bride’s Worst Nightmare

May 11th, 2011 @ 12:57 pm by Ms. Gazelle

Well Hive, confession time. Ever since university I’ve struggled with my weight, going up and down 20 pounds here and there. Training for long distance triathlons was my way of keeping my weight in check. Unfortunately after I finished Ironman Canada back in August I was completely burned out. I was completely unmotivated to do much of anything in the fall and well…it came around and bit me in the behind. I gained weight. After buying my sample dress that fit perfectly.

I tried to come up with a game plan in the new year to drop the weight but I had difficulty being consistent with my plan. The scale didn’t budge and my measurements stayed exactly the same. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about my dress fitting.

Long story short, I tried my dress on this morning while my mom was visiting. It zips up over my waist but the zipper over my bust is a complete no go. My mom suggested I try a different bra, but there was no padding whatsoever in the bra I already had on. Yeah, the bra wasn’t the problem. Crap, my dress doesn’t fit.

There isn’t much point in crying about it, I need to do something about it.

I have a couple of weeks to attempt to drop some weight and if nothing happens I’ll consider alterations—whether letting some out on the sides is a possibility or converting the zipper back to a corset. The dress has to go for alterations by the end of the month.

What am I going to do?

Exercise! I’ve had great results in the past with a local women’s only boot camp so I signed up. Class is three times a week for eight weeks. This will help me to exercise consistently and the combo of cardio and weight training should be effective. Plus I now that the days are longer and the weather is nicer I should be able to start riding my bike into work—a 45 to 60 minute commute each way.

Keep a food log! The best way to watch what you are eating is to write it down. I know in the past I’ve definitely thought about whether I really needed that peanut butter cup if I knew that I had to write it down on a log. I need to plan my meals out, making sure that I’ve got plenty of healthy ingredients on hand. Snacks are also key and should include a little protein to help make me feel full. Apples with a bit of peanut butter is a perfect choice. It is time to be diligent about sweets, my major weakness. I know to be smart about my calorie intake as really limiting it will only wind up hurting me.

Wish me luck Hive, I need to fit into my wedding dress in two months. Do you have any tips to share to help me get there?

Water!!! I am doing a bootcamp too and trying to keep my calories at 1300-1400 per day. I find that drinking excess water helps me feel full.

That and eating every 3 hours, 3 meals with 3 snacks! Trains your body not to “hang on” to calories it doesn’t need!

Good luck!!!! I working out right along side you!

Good luck! I was worried about my dress too, but fortunately I was able to zip it up but I definitely can’t gain any weight in the next 7 weeks.

I’ll be sending you good vibes as I try to run off the 10 pounds I need to lose so I can breathe comfortably the day of my wedding :)

I agree with jboltz 19…exercise, water and eating every three hours is a healthy way to go. We’re pulling for you, Gazelle…you absolutely can (and will) do it.

I had bariatric surgery about 4 months ago after struggling very hard with my weight. The best thing it has taught me is the extreme importance of eating 60-80g of protein per day, and as few simple carbs per day as possible (below 40 ideally!). When you eat a meal, start with your protein portion. If you are still hungry, then eat your veggies. THEN at the very end, if you must, eat your carb.

Also, cut out ALL soda!!! And drink as much water as humanly possible!

It sounds like you have the exercise portion under control. Good luck to you, and if you want any recommendations for protein shakes, supplements, etc, feel free to message me!

Good luck! xoxo

Cut out wheat and dairy. Gluten is sneaky and finds its way into many things. It is a pretty boring diet, but it helps.

“Taste Everything, Eat Nothing”. I’m not promoting starvation. What it means is that taste food throughout the day to avoid getting hungry. There is a lag between eating and feeling satisfied so tasting gives your body the time needed to consume, process, and register your food. If you let yourself get hungry you might over induldge.

Hey fellow canuck!

Im on the same boat as you!

I started to calorie count and signed up for boot camp! its painful and exhausting, but the results are there!!

what I also do is to do some yoga on my “off days” - days Im not in bootcamp, just to stretch out those sore muscles and get some zen in me…

it works wonders!

Good luck!

I think your current plan is the best way for you to meet your goal Ms. Gazelle! Last year when I had to lose a few pounds before my wedding I tracked all of my calories and that honestly out of all the methods I’ve tried before worked the best to help me lose weight. I knew how many calories I could eat a day to lose a certain number of pounds a week and as long as I stuck with it the pounds came off…. Also I increased the difficulty of my workouts and snacked constantly all day long (healthy snacks of course) to keep me from every getting too hungry… (I make the worst food decisions when I am ravenous!)

Good Luck Ms. Gazelle you can totally do this!

I had to let my dress out a little… it kind of made me sad but then I realized that as long as I was comfortable in the dress, I shouldn’t care about a few pounds.

Good luck!

If you’re going to keep a food log, I suggest using http://www.myfitnesspal.com. (or you can get get the free app for your phone). It has really helpful and easy to use tools to count calories in and out but you can also track protein, sugars, fibre, etc. It also gives you access to blogs and message boards with recipes, tips, and pretty much anything else you might want (it’s where I heard about WB!) I used it for about 2 months and ended up losing close to 18lbs And the best part - IT’s FREE!!!

Good Luck :)

A month before my wedding, my dress finally came in and I tried it on for the first time. It zipped up, but just barely. My seamstress told me to drink lots of hot tea and stop eating bread and sugar. My next fitting was 2 weeks later. I cut out breads (really, most simple carbs), sweets, drank lots of tea and water, and did a lot of circuit training. I dropped 5 pounds and the dress fit beautifully. Over the next 2 weeks, I kept it up and dropped another 3 pounds. To me, it wasn’t about losing weight - I just didn’t want to have to pay for more alterations on the dress!

You can do it! I was totally unmotivated before putting my dress on. Once I knew what I was dealing with and the reality hit me, I was an exercising machine!

why is every little thing “a bride’s worst nightmare”? i can think of so many things more devastating than a dress not fitting. it’s a dress.

i do applaud not crying about it and trying to do something, though. good luck!

I lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks by counting calories, keeping a food diary, and exercising daily. If I can do it, anyone can! Good luck!

Hey fellow triathlete!

I think your main plan is a total winner. Perhaps for your exercise, though, you ought to pick something completely new. When your body has to do something it’s never done before, it has to work much harder. Since your body is already quite used to swim-bike-run, maybe try something super intense like boxing! Also, it won’t feel so much like the same ol’, same ol’. And for weekends, I would pick really active stuff to do with a buddy in your free time (if you have any of that this close to the wedding!), like kayaking, rock climbing or just hiking.

Is there by chance a race you can sign up for about a week before the big day? I know for me that having an event coming up scares me into training like crazy! :)

You can do it! And even if you don’t hit the mark, it’s not like you won’t look freakin’ gorgeous anyway!

You can do it!!! Good luck.

A good mixture of strength and cardio will do the trick ESPECIALLY if you are watching you food intake. That is the most important part (for me, at least) if I’m looking to see weight loss results.

Keep us posted on your progress!
