Dance With Me?

May 11th, 2011 @ 5:08 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

I haz no dancing skillz. I’m a lefty with two left feet! Dancing is one of the few things that can turn this confident, outgoing bride into a reluctant wallflower. Confession: I’ve never really gone dancing. That whole part of young adulthood… I missed the memo. Merengue? Tried it while studying abroad in the Dominican Republic; never took, my hips don’t move like that.

Do these diagrams confuse anyone else??

This whole “dancing thing” (because it is now a thing for me) was brought to the forefront quite recently as I watched our newly married friends kicking up their well-choreographed heels at their wedding in Mexico.

As the night wore on, Mr. PaC joined the fray with some impromptu and hysterical moves. And where was I? Hiding behind the lens of my camera, capturing everyone else cutting loose.

My dancing fool with a borrowed hat.

There will be dancing at our wedding. I really want to participate without feeling self conscious. Mrs. Taco and Mrs. Octopus’s epic dance recaps have inspired me to step outside of my comfort zone and give it a try.

Here’s where you guys come in! I know there are dance experts buzzing around our little beehive. Our first dance (Better Together - Jack Johnson) has thrown us another curveball. It has a danceable beat but it’s a little fast for a slow dance. How the heck do we (I) dance to this? What dance steps are a good fit for the tempo and style? What would you recommend for someone who has trouble remembering more than 4 dance steps?

I am SO in trouble.

I think you could do a foxtrot to that song no problem and probably be pretty decent at it after only a few lessons. Foxtrot is the first dance they teach everyone because its pretty simple and then when you get the hang of it you can add a couple turns to spice things up.

I’d say get yourselves enrolled for a couple private dance lessons (google “dance lessons ” and you can usually find dance studios with specials for starting out). Having an instructor just to yourselves will make it less frustrating if you forget stuff or aren’t picking up on it as fast as a big group class might want you to. Make sure you practice at home between lessons or you will forget everything by the next one.

Formal dancing is really MUCH easier to do than it looks once you know the basic move.

Good luck!

Seriously? I recommend dance lessons. I’ll probably post on this after the wedding, but dance lessons are the most fun part of wedding planing. Plus you’ll quickly learn that you’re not required to know much of anything. You’re only required to go where Mr. PAC drives you. Seriously. Dance lessons lady. Trust me. ;)

Love those pictures of Mr. PaC letting loose! (Mr. P is the same way)

I think no matter how great or horrible your dancing, guests are going to love it because it’s your wedding day and your first dance. I say just have fun with it!

I used to work for a dance studio (only as teh business manager!). Definitely consider lessons, even one will make a big difference. If lessons aren’t an option, the DVD that our studio put out is another good choice. It’s called Dancing Together and it’s on Amazon. If you guys do it right, you won’t need to remember much of anything - you’ll just have to learn to follow what your Mr. is asking you to do!

Your song seems fine - believe it or not, songs can be too slow to be danceable as well. Just make sure it’s about 2.5- 3 minutes long, if it is longer, have the DJ fade it out or ask the rest of the bridal party to join you on the dance floor.

I wish my FI liked to dance. Mine definitely does not. I have to beg and plead to get one dance out of him when we go to other weddings. I am curious to see what he will do at ours.

I am also not a dancer. I can read music and I play 3 different instruments, but ask to me to move my body to music…. It’s not pretty.

I agree with a previous poster- foxtrot seems like it would fit. FH and I are not ballroom people, give us a song that’s swung and we’re set but the uprightness of ballroom and we’re a bit iffy and even we can do a decent foxtrot.
(And an instructor is highly recommended, most area has a ballroom group/club/society that meets and they can recommend an instructor.) I know most don’t recommend it but group lessons can be fun to when starting out.

Agree with Loxy - dance lessons missy! I don’t know about the song, but a dance teacher could tell you what dance will work best.

Dance lesson(s) it is. *cringes* We have a coupons for free dance class at a few local studios. Guess we should take advantage of them… soon.

I think starting with private lessons is the best route for me. (Learn to dance + in front of people? Are you kidding me?! I’m cringing over here.)

Aw, glad to be inspiration, thanks for the shout, PaC. We didn’t have dance lessons (which may or may not have been obvious), but I think they’re a nifty idea.

We also took private lessons, and they ended up being quite a bit of fun! Good luck, and as the PPs have said, there will be dancing so long as you and the Mr. are having a blast!

So much of dancing is just having confidence. Even if the moves aren’t that great, if you have a look on your face like you are the bomb, you’ll look awesome. Whatever you can do to get your confidence would be my advice. Whether that be dance lessons, practicing dancing more at home, watching music videos, etc.
