Mrs. Panther's Picture
Mrs. Panther, Atlanta GA/Westport CT Age and Occupation: 24, Web Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Music Recording Engineer Engagement Date: March 13, 2010 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: The Inn at Longshore About Me: I'm a total goofball who goes through life at a breakneck pace, trying not to knock anything over. I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Mr. Panther and I are hardcore New Englanders planning Connecticut nuptials from our new home in the Dirty South, and can't wait to mix our newfound love of classic Southern charm with some modern city touches.
About Mrs. Panther

Welp, like Miss Cotton Candy’s, our wedding invitations are late, late, late. Just how late they are depends on what you consider the Must-Send-Them-Out deadline, but I’ve also been getting some Facebook questioning, so I figure I must be tardy. Our wedding is seven weeks from Saturday. They’ll probably go out by then, so it’s not TOO bad, but our RSVP deadline is June 1. Oh, well.

Anywho, while I finish these suckers up, I thought I should start talking about the road that led to them. I have been absolutely obsessed with wedding stationery since before I got engaged, so I can’t even tell you how many inspiration photos I have saved on my computer. It’s a lot.

Before I knew that I was going to tackle the stationery on my own, I wanted these:

Lotus Blooms by Wedding Paper Divas

I loved the colors, and thought digital printing seemed like a great option. I really didn’t care about letterpress and didn’t understand why anyone would pay so much for something that limited your color options.

But when I got the sample, it just seemed cheap. It was much smaller than I had expected, and the paper was so flimsy. I decided to keep ordering samples, and when I got one from Paperwhites Press that I absolutely loved, my feelings started to shift.

I was pretty sold on these until I started messing around with Illustrator. Soon, I discovered that I was way too picky to let someone else design our invitations. I am not a designer at all, but I’m a control freak. I figured that I’d rather have complete control over something that might turn out as well. Does that sound crazy? That’s OK. I know.

So, while I thought about designing our stationery, I collected pictures of invitations I liked. I knew I liked flourishy shapes with scripty fonts:

I was a huge fan of Mrs. Pudding’s suite:

Another favorite was Claire by Gwyneth Paige:

And Grace by Wiley Valentine on Minted

This next suite was a perfect combination of stripes and swirly shapes, and I loved the script font paired with the blockier Ecuyer DAX-eque font (I don’t know if that’s actually what is; that’s just the first of those blocky fonts that I was introduced to).

This was the initial attempt. I got the damask background for free online, and downloaded the round shape around our initials from istockphoto.com. I intended to use it as our “monogram,” and repeat it all over our stationery, including on a paper bellyband. Let’s be honest. The whole thing is pretty terrible:

Design 2 was maybe a little bit better, but not much. I eventually purchased the peony background from iStockphoto, but when I made this comp, I was using a saved image from the site that I had color-replaced in Photoshop. It looks awful!

Design 3 was made after I’d purchased the peony background, and that helped a lot. I actually still kind of like this design.

Tales of an Indecisive Bride: Invitation Inspiration : wedding atlanta invitations stationery 9 9

Design 4 was much too busy.

Tales of an Indecisive Bride: Invitation Inspiration : wedding atlanta invitations stationery 10 10

And Design 7 (don’t ask me what happened to designs 5 and 6—they’re not in my folder!) was just MEH.

It was around Design 8 when things started to get out of hand.

To be continued!

Did any of you go through a million crappy drafts while trying to design your invitations? Anyone else go through a Feel-Script-paired-with-Ecuyer-DAX phase?

I was told 6 weeks before the wedding is when invitations should be sent out. I think you’re totally good!

you’re too hard on yourself! I think some of those designs are pretty impressive! given that those are the rejects, I’m quite anxious to see what ultimately was up to snuff!

I went through a whole lot of iterations I didn’t like of ours too. But I think ALL your drafts are pretty!

These are ALL gorgeous!
As a guest I like having a short turn-around time for rsvp’s — it feels more urgent for me to respond.

Why do people feel the need to bug us on facebook! My response to them is you got the save the date wich means the date should be saved all you need to know is the adress and time folks so leave me alone so i can work! BTW invites 1-7 all look like winners but I can totally respect the need to have them perfect!

@Kinsey123: I hope so! I’ve heard that, too, but since I made the RSVP deadline a little earlier than usual, I wasn’t sure if it applied to me …
@Miss Snow Cone: Aw, thank you!
@Miss Hyena: Thanks! FYI, yours turned out AWESOME.
@Coffeecake: Thank you! I feel that way, too. I got an invitation at the beginning of April with a May 7 RSVP deadline, and didn’t send it back right away, and then I lost it. WHOOPS!

@Miss Cotton Candy: RIGHT?! I actually think a couple of the people who asked me were wondering if they had been un-invited. Don’t they know that would be completely inappropriate etiquette and I would NEVER do that?? Plus, my save the date had the URL to my website, which had more info than any guest could ever possibly need!

Although you’ve already decided against them, I must say that I love design #2! It looks so fun and yet elegant. The solid on top of the peony background helps it not seem so busy.

Beautiful color combo also :)

You have clearly drunk deeply from the crazy cup. I think almost all the drafts are lovely!

I’m so excited to see your final product…and hear how it went because like you, I have done a million gazillion mock ups! I keep finding what I don’t like about mine and what I do like about others. Give me hope, Panther!

Wow. Those look great, you were way too hard on yourself! I wish I had your talent, ours are looking like a 4th grader made them.

@monicajae: Thank you! I hated that one less than some others, haha.
@teaadntoast: Hahahaha! I love that. I am a crazyaholic. I need treatment for all the crazy I drink.
@tocarat: You’ll get there! I seriously started these drafts in May of last year, and didn’t come up with one I loved until winter. And even then, I didn’t really LOVE it on my screen, but once it was printed I was happy! Have faith!
@Miss Pony: You’re nuts! I bet yours are awesome. :)

@taraandchuck2012: If you’re talking about the damask one, I got it here: http://xe0s.deviantart.com/art/ai-Pattern-Hall-of-Shame-46502121 I wanted to link to it in my post, but I didn’t find it until now!
