Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Facing the Dreaded R-Monster

May 11th, 2011 @ 11:11 am by Mrs. Snow Cone

For about two months now, Mr. Snow Cone and I have had “register for gifts” on our wedding to-do list. And, for about two months now, we’ve managed to bob and weave, trying our very best to avoid this dreaded task. Now, to an outsider, registering may seem like an awesome task to have. Think about it: you walk through a store and handpick each and every item you want other people to buy for you. It’s just that easy! To those facing the R-monster in the eyes, you know it to be a serious sweat-inducer. In reality, you’re walking through a store that is inevitably much larger than you had ever realized, trying to decide which of the 30 different types of towels you want in which of the 15 available colors. You’re also trying to compromise your own stylistic preferences with those of your future spouse’s. You’re also trying to stay calm and patient with the whole process while being focused and efficient. And you’re also trying to make sure you pick the right stuff, since this is one of the few opportunities in life where you get pretty much full control over what gifts you receive. No pressure at all!

We finally buckled down and started taming the R-monster. We headed off to our local Bed Bath & Beyond to start deciding what items we needed for our bedroom, our bathroom, and our beyondroom. After filling out some quick paperwork and getting our hands on that lovely scanner gun, we started to make our way through the store. Everyone knows BB&B is a doozy of a shop; however, when you’re looking at roughly 80% of their merchandise, “doozy” is quite the understatement. We shopped for about three hours and, not surprisingly, we ran into one minor meltdown. Surprisingly, however, it was courtesy of yours truly. Registering can be such a brain drain, and I’m fully confident that everyone has a breaking point where you don’t want to weigh picking one set of muffin tins over the other, and you just want to get the hell outta dodge. Mr. Snow Cone wasn’t as easily deterred, so he foraged onward, pulling my temper-tantrum-y butt into the last leg of the store before we could finally call it a day.

The end result? We don’t have nearly enough on the friggin’ list. We have about 100 items, which sounds reasonable. However, I’d bet about two thirds of the items are $20 or under, and the remaining third weigh in at $200 or above. Not exactly ideal gift-buying terrain for our guests. We also failed to include flatware, dishes, and bedding, hoping to knock it out at a subsequent store. Despite our mediocre showing, here are a few of my most highly coveted items:

The ubiquitous KitchenAid stand mixer. Yes, I know that this lovely contraption crops up on the majority of registries, and yes, I know it’s on the expensive side of things with a price tag of $300. However, I love me some baking, Mr. Snow Cone bought me a beginner’s cake-decorating kit for Christmas, and I’ve been counting down the days until my wedding for a long, long time, knowing this beaut would be more than likely coming my way at that point in time. Fingers crossed we have a very generous guest, or a group of very organized guests who would like to all chip in!

These may look like regular ol’ bathroom mats. But don’t be fooled! They are memory-foam bathroom mats, AKA little pieces of heaven for your feet. Just imagine how much more comfortable I’ll be while brushing my teeth! Maybe not a traditional top-priority item, but I’m a sucker for memory foam anything.

Right now, I’m surviving largely on hand-me-downs and college-apartment leftovers when it comes to my kitchen arsenal. Not exactly the ideal set-up. So, you can imagine my desire for a full set of CorningWare; I’m ready to live, cook, and eat like a grownup, and hopefully this will be a step in the right direction.

Now that round one of taming the R-monster is done, I feel like a weight’s been lifted off. BB&B is likely our biggest registry trip, so everything should be downhill from here. I think the outing went far better than expected, probably because we approached it with a laid-back attitude. Whatever we got done would be OK, and we could always come back to finish up and round out the registry in the future. Even though the entire process was a bit scary, we managed to handle it with a morsel of success, I do believe!

How did you first attempt at registering go? Any tips for people just starting to tame the R-monster?

I have those bath mats, and they seriously make my day every morning. Between that and my 10 option showerhead, my tiny bathroom feels like a little slice of heaven. :)

Ugh registering was the pits. Seriously. However, now that I have received my glorious stand mixer (YES), and some china sets are trickling in, I am super happy with it. Obviously :) Hope you got some ice cream or something afterwards.

Oh, memory foam bath mats sound divine. I think I will have to add those to my must-have list for when we go!

we registered at BBB this weekend and enjoyed ourselves. we also registered at kohls. since we split up what types of stuff we were registering for at each store, we were able to split the 3-4 hour job into two 2 hour sessions which made it SO much more enjoyable and less draining. we registered for the stand mixer too! i hope you get it!

We registered for the memoryfoam mat too! FH insisted on it- it’ll be a step up from his Baylor football mat that is looking awkward in front of his tub.

Hi Miss Snow Cone!

I’m an August bride too :) I have Target and BB&B registries and I did 75% of my registering ONLINE, at home, in my pj’s. I can’t recommend it enough! If I’m at home cooking and think of something I want, I just run to the computer and add it.

It is much easier to add/change items and quantities online, and you can always return or exchange the item if it isn’t exactly what you were looking for. Don’t be afraid to register for fun stuff too like board games, etc. Also, don’t forget about a Honeymoon registry for your trip if that is something you might want!

Good luck with the rest of your R-Monstering :)

We tackled the registry in parts. I did a lot of pre-work i.e. internet shopping to figure out what things we would register for at each store. It basically broke down like this Macys- Kitchen appliances, glass ware, formal china, and cookware; Target- bedding, bath, informal china, other small kitchen stuff (can opener, pot holders, etc.), and vacuum.

Registering was overwhelming at points- I mean by the end of it, I think I was seeing doubles lol. But nonetheless, we banged in out in one 5 hour shift! Then came home, looked at all the stuff, changed some things, and haven’t looked back since! I recommend if you go with BBB to go on a Sunday before they open. You have the store to yourself, and someone walks around with you clicking away at what you choose. They also give you advice on whats important, whats a must have, what people often get, and what would be plain old fun to include. As a couple who recently graduated college, we didn’t have anything of value together. BBB was so helpful in picking out things I know we will have and love for many years to come! Also, they allowed me to not overanalyze anything. I went in, said oh, this is pretty and it was on the list! Easy peasy! (just a little tiring) but we took a nap afterward and woke up late Sunday afternoon and had a beer and a burger. Not too shabby of a day! You’ll be fine! Good luck!

I went a different route we have one rather small registry at Crate and Barrel which will probably be empty after the bridal shower. As a side note, if you are going to register there make sure you go to one of their wedding parties. Shopping is more fun with a mimosa in hand!

Most of our registry is our honeymoon registry, and so far it has been a hit. People really seem to enjoy the idea and I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback. However my family and guests are not very traditional, so I don’t need to worry about offending anyone by basically asking for money.

oh lord - you’re doing better than we are - we have about 65 items, and a 250-person guest list. hmm. think we are going to add a honeyfund because I just CANNOT find that much more “traditional” stuff to register for! we’ve lived together for over 2 years already and while I am excited to upgrade a lot of our things, we just don’t need THAT much (we also live in a 1BR apartment in Manhattan, so space constraints are a big issue)…oy.

As another August bride, I too, have been feeling the pressure of the R Monster! Miss Snow Cone, you are so right about the burden of having TOO MANY options to pick from. Like, why can’t there only be Martha Stewart towels? Do I really have to go feel the fifteen different brands that Macy’s carries? Will I really care a year from now which ones are in my linen closet? But at the time, it feels like such an important decision!

But guys, for real, you have to got to register on Amazon. With their Universal Registry, you can register for literally anything you find online - and you never have to leave home! The FI loves the Amazon registry, too, because it let him register for some coolio sleeping bags and camping gear that aren’t carried at the typical places you register with. I’ve got stuff on our registry from all our favorite stores - West Elm, Jonathan Adler, Target - and guests can just have it shipped to wherever you prefer! Looooove it!

I love Corningware, but my suggestion is to skip the heavy stuff and get Corningware Lite! We got a set for Christmas and it is so amazing! It’s at least 75% lighter than the original and just as sturdy. Which is fantastic if, like me, you’re forced to store all your cookingware on the top shelf of the cabinet and refuse to get out a stepstool when you have to pull it down…

We went to one of Crate & Barrel’s registry party. It was fun! We got to eat waffles with strawberries and drink mimosas.

I found registering to be much more enjoyable at home where the options were less in-your-face and I wasn’t bombarded with salespeople every ten minutes. I thought it would be a lot more fun that it actually was.

I registered for the green mixer too. FI couldn’t understand why the white one that was cheaper wouldn’t be ok. I hope we both get one!

Yet another reason why I love the hive! I felt the same way as you Snowcone! :/ The FI didn’t get it either, he was wondering why I was so feeling frusturated & pressured….(ummm hi these items will be living in our home with us & hopefully be the talk of our visits!) ;) you’ve gotten further than we have so far….we have about 40-50 items! Yikes…I think it’s time for round 2!
