Mrs. Balloons's Picture
Mrs. Balloons, Aspen, CO Age and Occupation: 24, Mass Communications graduate, Web Design student, & winery worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer Engagement Date: July 10, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: The Sundeck at The Little Nell About Me: I'm a small-town Midwest girl planning an intimate mountaintop destination wedding complete with a huge DIY at-home reception. As an honors graduate fallen victim to the worst job market in history in my area, we're doing everything we can to still have the wedding of our dreams on a tighter budget. I currently enjoy working at a winery, but I'm lonnng overdue for a day job! I am: a big-time daydreamer, one of the pickiest eaters you'll ever meet, and a lover of pretty paper and awesome fonts. I'm a girly girl who loves to get dolled up, but also a country girl who loves to get muddy and go 4-wheeler riding. I also enjoy singing in the car, boating, going to concerts, the History Channel, carnival food, and going to watch St. Louis Cardinals baseball with my handsome engineer.
About Mrs. Balloons

Remember how I told you we booked a reception hall near our hometown for the at-home reception? Remember how I didn’t mention much about it, except that it was booked? Yeeeah…that’s because I was not particularly excited about it. It was a nice hall, but there were a lot of issues that I had with it. Exhibit A: The ugly carpet:

Starting to Plan: The At-Home Reception : wedding aspen decor Ball1 ball1

Blahhh. Why, oh, WHY do reception halls have to have ugly carpet that doesn’t match anything?! I was convinced for a while that I would someday come to the rescue and open up a reception place with neutrality so that brides could rest assured that their colors/theme would match regardless…or at the least not completely clash like in this picture above!

Exhibit B: They required alcohol to be purchased through them, which of course means higher, inflated prices.

Exhibit C: Red banquet chairs that would not match whatsoever, therefore requiring chair covers, which cost more money.

The direction of the reception as far as a theme or style goes was in the middle of an identity crisis. I could not decide between something bold like a bright color paired with a damask pattern like this:

Or more of a laid-back, rustic vibe like this.

I ended up deciding that, overall, I liked the rustic vibe better since we’re having a mountain wedding, and I could already picture lots of DIY projects to ease costs. (Plus I doubt damask and bright colors would really complement that lovely floral carpet so well…) I was having a hard time picturing, however, how this nature-inspired theme was going to fit into a banquet-hall type setting. I mean, it can be done, but to make it look decent in such a large space, it still wasn’t going to be as cheap as I was hoping. All the while, Mr. Balloons was insisting that we are already having a gorgeous wedding in Colorado, so we don’t really need to decorate the at-home reception much, if at all. OK, now, while I am trying my best to save money in every way possible, I cannot just half-ass the decorating for the reception because I do not want it to look as though I tried to decorate but just failed miserably. Also, the aesthetics actually are really important to me, and I feel like if I didn’t decorate at all, it wouldn’t really be representing who I am.

I started pondering what my dream reception venue would look like if I could choose it. The more I researched, the more and more I fell in love with the rustic-chic type style. Some of the most beautiful receptions that I’ve seen took place in old barns or outdoors.

…but of coooourse, my search turned up no such venues in my area. Looking at all the barn inspiration, however, did make me think of an old red barn that stands on some land that my dad owns out in the country of my hometown. This barn unfortunately is beginning to fall apart with a caving roof. :( My dad had joked to me before that we should have our reception there, though, because we’ve had some pretty good parties out there. So after starting to really doubt that the reception hall that we booked was the best place for us, I told my dad that I was serious about looking into having it out there, and he was all for it! He said that he has been thinking for a while about building a new shed-type building out there and burning down the old house anyway! Long story short and zipping past some other details such as exploring the site, getting most of our deposit back from the reception hall that we originally booked and then cancelled, and starting to deconstruct the old house…I am RELIEVED that I’m going to get the (half) outdoor, nature-inspired reception that I was longing for! More inspiration and before/after pics of the space to come!

Anyone else feel like they had to settle for their venue? Anyone end up changing their original plan?

I’m so jealous! I wanted to have our wedding at my dad’s barn-like structure (we lovingly call it “the shed”), but Mr. Pony shot me down.

i think you’re gonna work wonders with your reception space, Miss B. it’s amazing what some pretty table linens, candles, lanterns and garland can do to an otherwise basic place. and the more decor you use to have the guests eyes looking upward (lanterns, balloons, garland, etc), the less noticeable that carpet will be.

I love barn receptions too! I’m doing my reception in an old barn that was converted into an event space (so it’s not as “old” looking as I’d really like it to be) but still has the beatiful barn beams. We are having the ceremony in the gardens outside the refurbished barn. I can’t wait to see your pictures and what all you do

We almost settled for our venue, but I am so glad we didn’t because we ended up finding the perfect one a few months later.

I have reception venue regret but there’s nothing I can do about it. I wish I had a different choice, but all of the places I wanted were booked and that was 1.5 years beforehand…geez. I’m trying to do as much as I can with lighting and decor :-)

Glad you got the venue you really wanted, but just FYI no one but a bride would have noticed the carpet. :)

we had originally thought of doing the barn reception also.
there are soooo many things you can do (decorations, tables, lighting, endless possibilities!!).
My FI comes from Upper state NY (almost in Canada, ay’), where they used to have a milk farm. They have lots of land & a really cool Barn.
But ALL of my family is in Connecticut, and we feared my family would flake out & not travel the 4 hours..

I’m with you on the anti-carpet. The one main reason I love my venue is that it is such a blank slate with simple white walls & wood floors. Can’t wait to see your details come together!

I’m so glad you like the place you’re having your reception at! I always dreamed of a church ceremony and an at-home reception on my parent’s golf course-front property in South Carolina. Instead I fell in love with a guy in Mississippi with a MUCH larger family than mine. So I’m getting married literally in the middle of the woods at his childhood summer camp and having the reception at a big southern mansion. I have some serious creative thinking to do to make the camp wedding-y!
