Shedding the Stretch Pants: Intro, The Before and Nutrition Counseling, Seven Weeks to On Track, Road Blocks and Results (So Far)

Money is something I’m loathe to talk about in such a public forum. But it’s about honesty, and while yes, it is possible to diet an exercise completely for free, some of us (ovah heeeeahhh) need a lot of external help to get ’er done.

What I really wanted to talk about today was the cost of losing weight: both time-wise, and money-wise. I’m not self motivated to diet/exercise, and I spent a lot of money (in my world of money) thus far to get to this point in what I at least consider is a healthy way. And of course, there were redundancies—I didn’t quit the YMCA until a month and a half after I was into my boot camp because I thought I’d return eventually.

THE MONETARY COST OF 15 POUNDS:

  • Existing YMCA membership (canceled after 2 months): $56 p/ month, $112 total
  • Semi personal training/nutrition counseling at Gym Class Fitness Oakland (6 weeks+1 week free promo): $425
  • Extra a la carte training sessions at Gym Class Fitness (10 sessions): $185
  • Calorie counting online: Free (Loseit.com)
  • Membership at new gym (after GCO) All-In-One-Fitness Albany: $49 p/ month, $98
  • Spinning shoes: $80
  • Heart rate monitor: $45

=========

TOTAL: $945

That’s a LOT of money for us. A LOT. Was it worth it? Sure. Not every penny of course (the redundant gym memberships were ridiculous) but I’d definitely pay it all over again if I were asked to. Moving forward, I now belong to a gym that is $49 a month, and have ceased semi-personal training and nutrition counseling.

THE TIME COST OF 15 POUNDS:

I worked out every day shaded in pink. On average I spent:

  • 3-4 hours a week working out
  • 1 hour a week for the first 7 weeks in nutrition counseling
  • 1-2 hours a week commuting to the gym(s)/counseling
  • 2 hours every Sunday for meal planning

=========

Total: on average, 7.5(ish) hours a week

Time wise, written out, it’s almost laughable how little time it takes to lose 15 pounds. It feels like a lot, between getting ready for the gym, driving there, and actually doing it. But, I factored that in above. I work out consistently, but I don’t work out THAT much. My new gym’s classes are 45 minutes long of intensive training (spin classes, boxing, weight lifting).

In that span of time I traveled about every other weekend for 2-4 days at a time. It didn’t matter and didn’t really throw me off track too badly, as I suspected it would.

I hate to break it to old me, but I did have time to work out and lose weight. Am I more tired lately? Sure, occasionally. Exercise is said to give you more energy but to be honest, the energy I exert to just LEAVE the house in general takes a lot out of me. Plus, I work out at night, when I don’t really need that extra surge of energy. It’s affirming to write this all out because now I know, when I say that I don’t have time to work out and plan out healthy meals, I realize that all it really takes is 7 hours out of my week (and that’s getting less and less as I start to settle into solid low-calorie go-to recipes instead of having to plan and seek them out) to see pretty good results.

$945, 7.5 hours a week, 3 months, 15 pounds. Was it worth it? Yes. Am I finished? No.

*I feel like I’ve been singing the praises of all of my diet/exercise gyms/classes/tools that I have to mention that I’ve paid full price for all gym memberships and all the online tools I use are free and found by recommendation by my trainer and I haven’t been paid to talk about any of them. You should assume this (because not disclosing such information, if I did get paid/compensated is illegal), but either way…just putting it out there.

I can see how the initials costs can be pretty high! I’m glad your wallet is going to get a little break now that you can settle into a new routine.

So proud of all of your accomplishments with this, Pengy! Such an inspiration.

I love how you marked days you worked out by shading the calendar! It looks like you did it with Google calendar, but I can’t figure out how to shade the dates. Any suggestions?

You should cut yourself some monetary slack - i’m sure that cutting out all the food you otherwise would have been eating (esp any pre-packaged, processed food) meant that you guys saved big time on grocery bills. I bet that brings down the total cost quite a bit!

@kaytieluv: Aww I did that in photoshop for this post. Unfortunately I don’t know how to do that directly on the calendar, but I agree, it’s totally rewarding to see it all shaded out like that! :)

@crayfish: So true! We went pescatarian at home which meant a lot of nights with just veggie food only…amazing how cheaply you can eat when you cut out meat (not to mention eat about half the food we used to anyway!) :)

Nice work! Losing weight can be not so fun to do, especially with a timeline. I seem to freak out when I put an end date on it. Hence why I have actually gained 8 pounds since I bought my dress. If you want to save more $ per month Costco usually sells 24hour fitness memberships 2 years is $299 which is less than $13/month!

That’s great to see how you did it! I was in the same boat, thinking how I didn’t have the time and whatnot. Well, finally I decided to stop making excuses. I found a regiment I like and started working out, and eventually changed my diet. Don’t get me wrong, it was (and still is) hard, but totally worth it. It helps that my fiance understands how important this is to me and helps out how he can.

Great job! I have a GF who joined a booty camp to help lose weight; same deal, $500 for the classes, plus new workout clothes +++. It was super expensive by the time you add it all up but she lost 20 pounds doing so.

To get back into my “perfect” body, I need to lose 50 pounds. To get into my gown, only 15 but I would love nothing more than to have to have the whole thing altered b/c I lose too much!!

I’m doing a bootcamp 3 days a week for the next 7 weeks, and I totally have time for it. I tried to convince myself I didn’t, so I wouldn’t sign up, but I was good, and I don’t feel like I’m missing time out of my day. The time between leaving home (on my bike!) and getting back after bootcamp is about 2 hours, so it is just 6 hours out of my week - not much at all!

I lost that much in 34 days with the 17 day diet. It’s awesome.

Thank you for sharing, I definitely try to talk myself out of exercise because of cost and time, but once you put it like this, it really puts it into perspective.

Thanks for the reality check about the costs - especially on the time side. Guess not having enough hours isn’t much of an excuse, after all.
Great work Pengy!

Haha–sometimes it takes all my energy just to leave the house too! I read an article where a celebrity said they always make themselves at least GO to the gym. Once she gets there if she is still too tired to work out then she can leave but usually once she is there she will work out. I do this too (easy since I pass the gym on my way home) and I’ve only ever left one time.

Oh, you missed another cost–replacing your wardrobe.

I lost 22 pounds, (1 to go!) and it took a gym membership and a personal trainer for a few months. I did not stay with the gym–I started running outdoors only and using the playground workouts from Shape magazine instead of lifting (using your body as resistance).

Cost? Trainer $700. Gym, about $30*7 months=$210
$910

Then… NONE of my pants fit. First thing was to buy a belt (cheap) but eventually had to buy pants. Also, REALLY needed a bra, and eventually bought some new shirts.

VERY EXPENSIVE but 100% worth it and I would do it again.

I never thought about it that way before. Very interesting blog!
