On our trip to Las Vegas, there were a few little things that made me think we might be getting engaged that weekend. But, I didn’t want to get my hopes up and be disappointed if it didn’t happen. We were in Las Vegas, dangit! I wanted to have a great time no matter what.
The little clues that came up throughout the weekend could have tipped me off, but I purposefully didn’t read too much into them so that it could still be at least a little bit of a surprise when it did happen. But looking back, its time to share all of the clues that were actually pointing directly at one thing and one thing only—getting engaged!
Mr. High Wire’s parents joined us on the trip, and we surprised them with a limo when we left the airport:

(Clue: FFIL insisted on carrying around his cooler bag with him while the rest of our luggage was in the trunk of the limo or being held while we waited for our room to be ready at the hotel. It turns out they were hiding my engagement ring in there!)

Except whenever we wanted to open the sun roof and pull one of those “sticking your head out” moves, the limo driver told us that all limos in Vegas lock their sunroofs ever since Vegas Vacation came out and Audrey got stuck in the sunroof. For some reason I don’t believe him, since the rest of the trip we saw other limos with people hanging out of the top.

This was the Stratosphere tower attached to our hotel. You could bungee jump off of it.

Our first order of business was swinging by the Expedia desk at the Tropicana to pick up our restaurant discount card. Our travel agent suggested this as a means to save a little money at some local restaurants. I think we only ended up using it once, though! Then we did lots of sightseeing.

That evening, his mom and I went to see the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show, LOVE. It was outstanding.

The mega-casinos are so lush and fancy. It was like a dream world!

Mr. High Wire decided that on Saturday night he wanted to take me to dinner at the top of the Stratosphere tower at their revolving restaurant, Top of the World. (Clue: He is not the type to want to go to super-fancy, expensive restaurants.) But we made reservations for that evening, and I would wear my brand new dress that he bought for me before we left. (Clue: Buying me a fancy dress. Clue: Him wearing a tie while on vacation.) It was just a lot of little odds and ends that weren’t his usual MO, but were all things that were very sweet and romantic and he knew they would put me in high spirits.
That afternoon after sightseeing, we lay down for a nap. We were both feeling pretty under the weather with some kind of cold, so I think we took a nap every day of the trip so that we could try to get better (or at least not get sicker). However, on Saturday we lay down for our daily nap and after about five minutes, he claimed he wasn’t tired and was going to go “confirm the reservations.” Uh, what? He is not a type-A freak like I am—much more of a roll-with-the-punches kind of guy. So now he had made reservations AND was going to confirm them?? Clue. Fishy. (It turns out that this is when he went to get the ring from his parents’ hotel room.)
We got ready for the evening and headed out the door. (Clue: He kept his left hand in his pocket for the entire walk from our room to the tower.)

We made separate reservations from his parents, so we didn’t even see them until after dinner. So, we arrived at the base of the tower and had to pass through a metal detector. He had to empty his pockets into a little bin before he passed through. (Clue: the security guard covered his hands over the bin and then guided me to the elevator while Mr. High Wire put the ring back into his pocket.) I found out later that he flashed the ring box to the guard in advance so he knew what was going on, and that was why he walked me all the way to the elevator. I really am thankful for all the random strangers (security at the airport, tower guards, etc.) for catching on quickly to what was going on and keeping me almost entirely in the dark as to what was going on. Props, you guys, props.
We sat down for our meal and I was speechless. The view from our seats was just breathtaking. The restaurant is 107 or so floors up and gives sweeping views of all of Las Vegas. The lights were turned down low, and we could see the glow of the whole city as we slowly revolved. There were candles and music playing and there couldn’t have been one more tiny detail to set the mood better. We ordered a couple of drinks and talked about how much fun we were having on the trip. (Clue: His hand was shaking as he poured his beer into his glass. I’ve never ever seen him nervous before.)
The food was outstanding and, as soon as we finished, the waiter came to clear our plates. Mr. High Wire turned to me and started talking about all of the things he loves about me and how happy he’s been for the last three years. And my heart started pounding. And my mind started racing even though I was trying to take in every word that he was saying. “Oh my gosh those clues really WERE clues.” “Is this really happening right now?” “He’s about to ask me holy crap!” I finally cleared my mind enough to just take in his last few sentences. “These last three years have been the best of my life, and I want to know how you feel about extending this for a lifetime. Will you marry me?” And out popped the most gorgeous ring I’d ever seen in my life! Stay tuned for the rest of the trip and of course a bunch of ring porn.
