Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Got Milk?

May 13th, 2011 @ 1:53 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

I’d like to take a moment to talk about a local wedding tradition that will be making an appearance at our August reception—the cookie table. Not familiar with this tradition? You can read a New York Times article about this quirky little detail here. Mrs. Octopus and Mrs. Cheeseburger also touched upon the issue when planning their respective Pennsylvania weddings. For those of you not interested in clicking to another page to get the low-down, allow me to explain. In Western Pennsylvania, many wedding receptions feature a cookie table. This is usually a spread of cookies that accompanies the wedding cake, rather than replacing it. However, this table isn’t composed of your typical Oreos and Pepperidge Farm Milanos. No, no. Much more labor and love goes into this bad boy.

Instead of your local supermarket fare, wedding cookie tables are comprised of dozens upon dozens of family cookies, highlighting the treasured recipes from the bride’s and/or groom’s clan. They are a huge tradition in Western Pennsylvania; I’ve heard more than my fair share of shocked and disappointed comments following a cookie-less wedding. This tradition is most actively practiced by the sizeable Italian community in the region. My family is not Italian, nor did they grow up in the region, which made cookie tables a relatively new concept to them. Mr. Snow Cone’s family, on the other hand, are born-and-bred Pennsylvanians and Italian with a capital “I.” While my family has never been part of a wedding that hosts a cookie table, it’s pretty much an expectation for any wedding in Mr. Snow Cone’s family. I was kind of plus-minus on the entire concept, seeing it as a lot of trouble for a tradition that I’m not terribly attached to. And then I heard, “You’re not thinking of not having a cookie table at the wedding, are you?”

At that moment, I realized that this is not something I can just write off because it’s not near and dear to my own heart. I’m only half of the wedding, so it’s ridiculous of me to think that my traditions and preferences will be the only ones put into motion. Mr. Snow Cone’s family associates weddings with cookie tables, so it would be absurd to not have a cookie table at his own wedding!

How many cookies are we realistically talking about? Well, our coordinator said that the general guideline is eight to ten cookies per person.

Let’s crunch the numbers.

Eight cookies per person x 250 people = 2000 cookies.

Two thousand cookies.

I know what you’re thinking: “Wow, that’s certainly a lot of cookies.” And I hear you on that one. But, for me, the reality of this gargantuan number of cookies didn’t really hit home until we determined how many dozens of cookies that would be.

2000 cookies / 12 cookies per dozen = 167 dozen cookies.

One hundred and sixty-seven DOZEN cookies.

Even though I’ve heard and looked at these numbers a good number of times, I still experience a minor “holy %*@$” moment every time they rear their gigantic heads. But don’t worry—there’s good news.

If we split it up 50-50, each family is only realistically responsible for about 85 dozen. Still a mind-boggling amount, but it’s a bit more manageable than 167 dozen, right? Plus, there’s always a network of family and friends who you can delegate cookie-baking to. No joke—as soon as we got engaged, my parents started receiving volunteers for cookie-baking. People are up to the task, which makes this entire project feasible. Our wedding isn’t until August, so there’s the better part of the summer to bake and freeze, cutting the workload into little bits here and there. Finally, if it turns out to be just too much, there’s always the option of ordering cookies from any number of bakers who specialize in wedding cookies. With all of these different options and strategies, I can sort of begin wrapping my head around all of this cookie business.

Have you seen cookies at weddings? And, just for fun, what’s your favorite type of cookie?

I’ve heard of this, and I think it’s seriously the most awesome tradition ever. I LOVE that people are volunteering to be cookie-bakers, and that these are homemade cookies made JUST for the bridge and groom by loved ones!! Such a sweet concept. And these pictures are making me SO hungry :)

Yes! We were born/raised/married outside Pittsburgh and nearly every wedding I’ve ever attended had 100s of dozens of cookies. It’s a charge including in lots of catering packages (”cookie plating fee”) and the facilities tell you when you or your designated cookie ladies can drop the cookies off to get the display ready. And yes, it’s kind of a given that cousins, aunts, friends of the mothers, etc will all chip in with several dozen a piece. I doesn’t take long to get to 167 dozen!

I love this tradition! I’m originally from the West coast but when I moved to PA/WV I was introduced to the awesomeness that is the cookie table. I cannot wait to have one of my own! And for the record- my favorite cookie is a sugar cookie filled with raspberry filling from a local bakery. To die for!

This is so funny! I’m from Ohio and this is a tradition in Eastern Ohio as well. The wedding I’m a bridesmaid in this summer is having 350+ guests. Her family is planning on 5,000 cookies!

I was at an appointment with the bride, her mother and the wedding coordinator and this topic dominated most of the meeting. We would be talking about the entree and suddenly the MOB would ask about cookies. Talking about getting guests from the wedding site to the reception site (same venue, difference spaces) - talk returns to cookies.

As a guest, however, I love the cookie table! A great regional tradition.

My former roommate is from PA and she basically had a destination wedding which eliminated the possibility of the cookie table. She was okay with it, but her mother was SO disappointed!

To answer to your question! I love the thumbprint type cookes, the shortbread with te chocolate fudge in them! yum-mmmeee!

I have never seen cookies at a wedding - but I just LOVE the idea! (with little milk shooters?) I can think of 4 or 5 traditional family recipes that could be made if we were to have one….too bad my wedding is a mere 2 weeks away and we wouldn’t be able to pull it off at this point.

However, Miss SC - if you want me to make you a couple dozen oatmeal scotchies and send them your way! Let me know! :-)

I’ve never heard of this before, but I love cookies, so it’s awesome. As for my favorite cookie, the peanut butter ones with chocolate.

ohh yeah, the cookies. I’m Italian and from northern WV (about an hour outside of Pittsburgh) and before I was even ENGAGED, my grandmother and great aunts were talking about how to divide up the cookie table. the fact that we decided to get married in South Carolina is making the issue of transporting the cookies extremely interesting, but it’s still happening!

I am such a cookie monster (it’s my fave dessert, next to ice cream!) I wish I had known about this tradition before my wedding! Plus my dad’s fam is from Pittsburgh so that would’ve been such a great way to recognize them…Ah well, maybe for my next wedding, HA!

I’m quite happy that Lancaster doesn’t have that tradition. I like cookies and all but that just seems like way too much work after the whoopie pies we’re making.

Hahaha as a Burgh-er, I can tell you that I have NEVER been to a wedding without a cookie table. Ever. I would cry if I went to a wedding and there were no cookies.

I remember seeing this at many of my friends wedding’s in Western PA. I replicated at my wedding in WV. My sister also had this at her wedding in Harrisburg, as some of her in-laws are from Western PA. Cool tradition.

I can’t believe you wrote about this today! I was just going to comment on your older posts and asking you if you are having a cookie table and I see this post. Too funny. I am as well from PGH and LOVE this tradition. My grandmother is an avid baker and I can’t wait to make cookies with her for my wedding! It was the first thing my Fiance requested for the wedding!

I find this fascinating. Being from eastern PA, I’ve never heard of this tradition, but Italians do make some awesome cookies, so I suppose it makes sense.

That is a daunting amount of cookies, especially since I’m not much of a baker, but hopefully you’ll have lots of contributors.

Maybe you could have little paper bags so that people can take cookies home as favors? That way you won’t have a thousand cookies left over!
