Gauge Earrings

May 13th, 2011 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

During my wanders across Etsy last night, I came upon the glory of fake gauge earrings.

Now, I think gauges are kind of cool, but I would never actually want to make the hole in my ear big enough to wear them because a.) that’s gross, and b.) you can’t wear normal earrings then without unsightly loopy big holes. (Gross!)

Solution? Just wear fake gauges! You get the same look as the gothic hippies without changing your earring holes.

Will I wear them for the wedding? No way. But I am thinking about getting a pair sent to my mother’s house to pick up when we are there. Could be my rehearsal-dinner earrings…

Have you come across anything really cool on your quest to find the perfect XYZ?

I hardly think that gauges are “gross”, as you put it. That wasn’t very nice to those of us with gauges!

I had gauges in college (only 4s though, so not huge), and I took them out after graduation for my “grown up” job and the holes completely closed up. You can’t even tell the difference. :)

I *love* those swans in the first pic!

Gauges aren’t usually my thing, but these look so cool! I really like the second pair.

fyi, some of us on the bee might have stretched ears and not consider them to be “gross.” nor do they necessarily leave you with “unsightly loopy holes.”

the earrings you’ve shown would be probably around 2g, which wouldn’t necessarily lend well to wearing regular earrings, but with a bit of modifications you could certainly do so (or find better/more-fun earrings that resembled your regular earrings). the largest my ears have been was a 4g and I typically could wear 18g (standard post earrings) without any difficulty or things looking weird. yes, you do end up with a larger hole in your ear, but if you do things right (read: slowly) the hole is quite round and certainly not unsightly! ;)

(not that I’m advocating you stretch your ears without researching things fully, but I’m just sayin’.)

that said, the swans are beautiful!

also, for what it’s worth, my ears haven’t been stretched for about a year and a half now. my SO was shocked when I told him I used to wear plugs! he thoroughly inspected my ears– now an 18g– and wouldn’t believe me until he saw pictures, hahaha. while you should always consider stretching a permanent modification, my ears lent themselves well to downsizing and restretching and everything in between!

Seriously? NOT cool to say that gauged earlobes are GROSS. Just because something isn’t your personal taste doesn’t mean you have to insult it like that.

My stretched earlobes are LOVELY.

SWAAAAN!!!!!!

Ok, yeah, tooo much Hot Fuzz, but I loooove that movie! (thanks sooo much to my beloved for introducing it to me!)

That are really cool earrings! I’m not fond of gauges, but I know some people who have ‘em.

If you find stretched lobes “gross” then why on Earth would you want to wear jewelry that gives the illusion of stretched lobes? This post is both hypocritical and insulting, and I am truly disappointed in the sweeping judgment passed here. Not to mention the broad generalization that anyone with stretched lobes is a “gothic hippie.” What does that even mean???

That’s awesome! Wish I had heard about these sooner… my FSIL recently gauged her ears cuz she loves the look of gauged earrings (like the ones you posted above!), but now she is regretting it because her other earrings no longer fit. This is great!!

I like the swan ones the most.

Gauged ears kind of freak me out. Then again, anything where people are altering their body like that freaks me out, but I’m also super squeamish.

I think this is a great compromise, no permanent change to your ears, but gives you that bold, edgy look.

awww…. miss funnel cake. there is no love in these responses :/

welps i hate to say it to those who have gauges but i’m pretty sure when getting them, they were trying to be bold and make a statement along the lines “Love’em or Hate’em blah blah blah….” but some people just aren’t on the same gauge train.

i love my skinny jeans and scene hair as much as the next acclaimed emo chick. but i think i’d prefer faking it with these awesome ones you’ve posted. thanks for this post!

Very cool. I think I may need to pick up a pair for my awesome bridesmaid. She would totally dig these for the wedding.

I don’t even have gauged ears and I thought your generalizations about those who do seemed seriously sweeping and demeaning. If you like the look enough to emulate it, stop calling the people who love it enough to do it “gross” and “gothic hippies”. If you don’t like the look, you can say so in a respectful way.

@DaraT: I certainly didn’t stretch my ears to be “bold” or to tell other people to “love ‘em or hate ‘em”. I stretched mine because I liked the aesthetic and enjoyed the process of knowing my body. most people never noticed I had stretched ears (because I have longer hair) and I didn’t advertise the issue– for me, and a lot of other people, body modification is a personal experience.

please recognize that if you have to start a comment with “I hate to say it to those…” then you might not need to say it at all.

@DaraT:

I stretched my ears for ME, because I like it. I never ask anyone’s opinion on what I do with my own body. If you don’t like stretched ears, then don’t do it to yourself. Don’t conclude that I’m trying to be “edgy” or “weird” or whatever you think. I don’t care what you do to your body, so don’t judge on what I do to mine.

To Miss Funnel Cake: the more I read your post, the more disappointed I am in your generalizations and rude choice of words. This is supposed to be a place where we all come together and respect each other despite our differences. To call my choices and my body “GROSS” is just rude and uncalled for. I hope that you’ll think twice before posting something like that again.

yea, those earrings are pretty sweet, especially the swans and the 2nd ones.

But I agree that this post wasn’t very nice, and a little contridictory.

While I do seriously love the Swan earrings I too found your sweeping generalizations quite rude. Calling anyone gross or labeling them Gothic hippies isn’t really your place now is it. Next time consider the fact that you have 100’s of women reading these posts with all different looks and personal choices and even if they are “Gothic hippies” they should not be made to feel poorly about that. I’m disappointed a Bee would even call someone gross.
