After the perfect date with Mr. Funnel Cake, I consigned myself to the fact that I would never see him again. I continued planning my Zürich Thanksgiving trip for my design gals coming to visit me and focused on finishing my internship and spending time with friends around Switzerland.
However, on the Wednesday before the girls arrived, I was very surprised to find an urgent email in my inbox:
Dear Miss Funnel Cake,
What was the first half of your week?
Please excuse my impertinence if I ask you the following: Because I really enjoy your company and I always like to meet new people, I wanted you to ask if I could assist you in showing Zurich to your friends.
Please excuse me if I’m pushy; I don’t want to be a burden. If you prefer to be alone with your friends don’t hesitate to say no.
If you answer after 12 AM tomorrow could you please be so kind and write me a short message? I probably won’t have any opportunity to check my emails from then until Saturday morning and it would be nice to know your decision.
Mr. Funnel Cake
Squeeee!! With butterflies in my stomach, I wrote him back immediately with the details. When my friends visited, we toured around Zürich with me and Mr. Funnel Cake leading the group playing our private “guess the word” game. I felt guilty that I was semi-ignoring my design friends who had come so far to visit, but I think they all understood why I wanted to talk to this cute Swiss guy. Besides, I had all weekend with them (plus they’d be in Ohio later), and Mr. FC was only there for the day!

When he wasn’t looking, I snapped this photo of Mr. Funnel Cake so that I would have a picture of him. Yes, I’m 12. What? You didn’t take secret photos of your crushes so you could ogle them at home?? Look at him—he’s dreamy!
In the evening we wound up back at the rotary house where I was living, and we had arranged a huge Thanksgiving feast for people living in the house. Mr. Funnel Cake stayed for dinner and sat very close to me as we all squished in at the table benches. We talked, ate, and had a merry time drinking wine.

We made Mr. FC start helping, too.
Lost in our own little world…
But when 10 PM rolled around, Mr. FC had to excuse himself to catch a train back to his small town, and I thought this might really be the last time I saw him. My last chance to make a move.
I walked up with him to the exit and felt my anxiety growing. We said our goodbyes and, standing in front of him, I totally chickened out and just gave him a hug. I had to do something, but I just couldn’t bring myself to try and make a move when I was still so fragile from my breakups. If he really liked me he would let me know, and I was still so unsure about his feelings. Mr. FC left, and I went back to the Thanksgiving dinner wondering what could have happened with him if I’d been more forward.
With a heavy heart, in December 2007 I left Switzerland and, after a week in Germany visiting design friends, I returned to Ohio to finish school and figure out what to do with my life. Although it was not clear to me yet, after my third meeting with Mr. Funnel Cake, I could no longer say with certainty that I would never see him again…
