Giving In and Feeling Good

May 14th, 2011 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Hyena

We talked about not having a DOC, and instead having family take care of the vital pre-wedding tasks. To be honest, I’d been waffling about this decision. In theory, having family take care of everything could have worked, if not for one little issue: we had no one to meet and direct the vendors when they arrive at Downtown 202 after the family leaves to get ready for the wedding.

I talked to Mom Hyena and FMIL Hyena, and turns out we all kind of felt like we needed one of these:

Where the heck is Jenny’s other arm?!

Don’t get me wrong—the family still intends to help out in every way possible, and I’m glad of that. Basically, I felt like I needed someone to be my advocate when I couldn’t be there, and FMIL Hyena agreed that it would take a lot of stress off all of us even just to have someone there for the little bit of time when no one else will be able to be in the reception area. (Like, oh, before and during the ceremony.)

So I hired a friendor to be our coordinator. One of my coworkers is the most organized, efficient person I know, and she had tried to get a job with a wedding coordinator before she began working at our company. We get along well, and I felt like it would be a good fit. Thankfully, she was really excited to help out, and I am so relieved to have an extra pair of hands on deck!

Have you hired any friendors?

While our DOC wasn’t a friendor, hiring her was one of the best decisions we made. Having someone advocate for you who is more emotionally disconnected from the wedding was really helpful!

Yup. Our photographer does it on the side as a hobby and our videographer produces/directs/films indy movies. Both are AWESOME with a camera and I’m looking forward to having them be a part of it. Plus, they’re both equally excited to be doing it. :)

We’re not having a DOC, though, due to location, venue, and the type of wedding it’s gonna be.

I’ve been thinking about hiring a DOC as well. Not for the church since one is provided. But for the reception. I basically want to make sure that if there are not enough chairs, no one runs to me while I’m trying to take pictures. I just want to have fun, not stress about the technical portions of a wedding. I don’t want my family to have to worry about it either. I can’t wait to hear how your friendor works out!

Our planner was one of our best decisions. It was so great to know that someone was setting up and dealing with all of the vendors the day of the wedding. I’m glad you have a friend that will step in and help out!

What a clever idea! I’m sure your friend is excited to help and proud that you gave her your vote of confidence to handle the pesky details, people herding and last minute drama.

I have a DOC/planner…..she really has been more than a DOC to me. She has helped me out along the way when I have been stuck for ideas and all kinds of other things I cant even begin to list. We have spent hours going over things. The day of I will do NOTHING! She knows how I want things, she knows every detail of every little thing and I love it! Best thing I did for this wedding!

I’m so so so glad we hired a DOC. I wouldn’t know where to begin without one. She isn’t a friendor…I wouldn’t be able to assert myself as well if it was someone I knew, I think.

I hired one for my daughter’s wedding four years ago, and it was the best money I ever spent. Hands down. So I’ve already put hiring a DOC at the top of the budget priority list. There’s absolutely no way I want any of my family or friends working on my day…I want them partying with me!

@Ryna: That’s awesome that you know so many people who are great with cameras! I’m sure it will turn out wonderfully. :)
@lisamarieloves: If you’re worried, maybe consider hiring someone (even a friend!) to do some kind of coordination. It’ll take some of the heat off you for the day.
@K_alecia: I’m glad! I feel similar, she’s given me several ideas already that we’re going to use!
@Miss High Wire: That’s a good point. Since we hired her so close to the wedding, I don’t feel like I have much to assert, but I think if I’d been using a planner all along, I may have needed it to be someone I didn’t know.
@Crown: And that, of course, is the most important thing! Party on! :)

I’m from the Netherlands, and here it is realy common to ask friends/brothers/sisters to be the DOC. It’s considerd as a honor-job, like being a maid-of-honor or a best man. It isn’t common to have (adult) bridesmades and grooms..
