Nightmare Before Wedmas

May 16th, 2011 @ 10:07 am by Mrs. Hyena

Remember when we talked a long time ago about bridesmaids’ dresses? I recently found out that the dress we chose had been discontinued.

Want to know how I found out? Three of my bridesmaids had received their dresses, while the fourth was told that the dress could not be shipped to her. Two months after she had placed her order. Less than four weeks before the wedding. I swear I stopped breathing.

So what is a girl to do in this situation (besides freak out, of course)? We knew it was too late to order a new dress, even if one was available, since it was way too close to the wedding. It seemed our only options were to look in classifieds and on eBay for used dresses, or to call bridal stores to see if any of them happened to have the dress in the correct color and size already in stock. After the online option proved fruitless, we called all the bridal stores that carry the Mori Lee line in the Houston, Austin, and Dallas areas, while Bridesmaids L and A tried the stores near them in California and Kansas. None of the stores had the dress.

In a last-ditch attempt, I drove across town to Bea’s Bridal (where Hyena Sis bought her dress) to see if there was anything they could do. The guy who runs Bea’s called the Mori Lee warehouse to see if they happened to have any of the dresses in stock. No such luck, but I wasn’t ready to give up hope. I asked if the warehouse had ANY other Mori Lee dresses in stock in “Wine.” They happened to have a different halter dress in the correct color and size. It is pretty similar and looked like our best option with so little time left.

After conversing with my bridesmaids, we decided to go for it. They said the dress could be delivered to Bea’s Bridal in 10 days—WAY less time than it takes to ship a new dress. I placed the order and started breathing again. Bridal-store guy, you’re my hero. Four days after I placed the order, Bea’s called to tell me the dress had arrived. I can’t say enough good things about this store.

We didn’t want it to be so obvious that three of the dresses were the same and only one was different, so the girls and I decided we could make some minor tweaks to the original dresses to make them all look slightly different from each other. We’re adjusting the straps on Hyena Sis’s dress to include some rhinestone work on the back. Bridesmaid A said she would tuck the straps into the top of the dress so it looks strapless. We also discussed removing the bow belt on one of the dresses and replacing it with some kind of sparkly brooch. If we’re going the mismatched-bridesmaid route, we’re going big. Going home is not an option.

Here’s what it might look like:

What do you think? Do you have any ideas for other minor changes to make the original dresses look different from each other?

I am so glad you were able to find a similar dress in the same color! I think the changes the BMs are making will be great, and will make them look different enough so the other dress doesn’t look out of place. Love the images of the altered dresses ;) hehe

Are your MOH and this missing dress maid the same size? Maybe just switch them around?

I would maybe try and alter the straps on one other dress and perhaps lose the bow belt on another one as well. The new dress still does stand out a bit, but being the same color and designer eliminates a lot of the obvious difference!

I’d consider adding a brooch (the same? a different one?) to the new dress as well. that way all the dresses will have some detail at the waist; and 2 will have a bow; and 2 will have a sparkle brooch. Depending on how the girls are lining up you could alternate bow / brooch; or not…

I’m happy that you were able to find a dress in the same color, but how stressful. Did all your girls buy their dresses at the same shop? Did the shop where the dress was ordered from give your bridesmaid a refund, discount, etc. for their error in ordering but not delivering?

I like your ideas of changing the dresses to make them appear different.

Maybe add a different color sash for one?

oh gosh that sounds awful that the dress was discontinued. i’m SO scared that will happen to me too because my wedding isn’t for another 6.5 months but my sister already bought hers. i hadn’t even told my other bms to buy theirs yet! i’m glad you were able to change the dresses up a little bit. i think they’ll look great!

Those two dresses look like they were made to be worn together, especially with the flouncy skirt. :) So glad you found a replacement!

Kuddos to you for having an awesome bride brain and solving this problem. I probably curled up in a small ball sucking my thumb. I love the mismatched look you have come up with.

@Lizziemom: The dresses were not all purchased at the same shop. My bridesmaids are in California, Kansas, Hong Kong and Dallas, and we couldn’t all get to the same store. Luckily Bridesmaid L got her money back from the undeliverable purchase.
@vintagemodernbride: I recommend getting your other dresses ASAP. Also, check to see when you dress was put out. Turns out Mori Lee 732 was a dress from 2007, so it makes sense it’s getting phased out now. I just didn’t know.

@Mrs. Tartlet: Thank you, this makes me feel better!
@Kcoleybear: LOL, pretty much did that for a good hour or two before I went psycho calling every store in Texas. :)

Totally off topic…but I’m in College Station too and have to say Bea’s is great! We went to try on Alfred Angelo BM dresses there, and the guy was so helpful!
