DI-Why?

May 16th, 2011 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Pony

I just saw this on Style Me Pretty (AKA the ultimate wedding/life inferiority-complex-inducing site) and I thought, I could do that.

DI-Why? : wedding bloomington decor diy Pony 200x300

This seems to be a recurring problem of mine. It goes something like this:

  1. See something awesome on a wedding blog (bonus if awesome thing was DIY-ed by the bride).
  2. Fall for awesome thing.
  3. Convince myself I have to have awesome thing at our wedding, even if I don’t care about that particular detail.
  4. Convince myself that I have the talent, patience, time, and money to create awesome thing for our wedding.
  5. Add awesome thing to ever-growing list of DIY projects to complete for wedding.
  6. Promptly do nothing to make DIY magic happen.

Most of the time, I don’t care about a certain detail until I see just how beautiful/fun/precious/darling/romantic it was in another couple’s wedding. So, even though our cake topper was at the bottom of my list of priorities for our wedding, I suddenly have the irresistible urge to gather some craft supplies and try my hand at creating something beautiful to sit atop our (imaginary) cake.

I think I finished our napkins too soon. The frustration and irritation over making 140 napkins has worn off too quickly. Now I think I can DIY ANYTHING for the wedding. But in reality, I have many limitations, least of which is motivation.

Do blogs make you take on unnecessary projects just because you think you can, or should, make a particular detail for your wedding? Do you know how to make it stop? Can you teach me how?

So I saw this amazing card box on Style, I think it was there. Anyway, it was a hollowed log with a piece cut off for a lid. Making it almost broke my then FI’s fingers, but it looked so good, I just got braver about what he could make.

Haha, I’m totally with you. I started saving images and adding DIY things to my list because, like you, they were just so adorable and fun and I could totally do it (right?). There’s not really any way to stop, unless you can force yourself to stop following said blogs (I couldn’t and can’t).

Honestly, I would keep collecting these ideas. You’ll discover what ones are actually important and do those first, and then as it gets closer to your day (and you’ve had a chance to let the freshness of a project wear off), you’ll find yourself removing projects from your list because they aren’t realistic due to budget or time. Or, because they just aren’t that big of a deal in the big picture. My list was HUGE in the beginning months, but I’ve been able to go through it periodically and erase things that just aren’t must-haves.

I’m so with you there! I D-I-Try, and then sometimes just give up. I wish I knew how to quit the blogs, but I’m so hopelessly addicted.

Wedding blogs are so addictive! I just stopped reading them (except for Weddingbee, of course) in the couple weeks leading up to our wedding. And, even then the inspiration around here was insanely tempting!

@TheFutureMcBride: That sounds so awesome and I totally get the feeling braver about the next project (or next 1000)!
@lullafly: I can’t stop the blog cycle yet, but I am just now starting to prioritize my projects since we’re inching closer to 100 days.
@haelmai: DI-Try–I love that saying!
@Mrs. Tartlet: They are addictive man. I could never ever give up the ‘bee (obviously) which is kind of terrible because it’s the best place ever for inspiration (and everything else, right?)

i’ve slowed down with the D-I-Y-am-i-doing-this-to-myself projects by running them by my family & brides maids.

if they ask more the 5 questions that make me second guess myself or i just can’t answer… it gets filed away & forgotten.

*raises hand* totally guilty of over ambitious diy-ing. you’re not alone, Miss P!
the solution? stop reading wedding blogs - save for WB. it helped me to focus on the projects/things we really really wanted to have, instead of chasing another pretty garland/ribbon wand/yadayadayada….

Yes! I didn’t even think to do any diy until I started reading wedding blogs and then I diy almost everything I possibly could!

Blogs have made me create a huge list of projects to do…but I don’t know how many of them I will definitely be completing.

I went out and bought all of the supplies to do one project, but it wound up being so expensive I got disgusted and returned it all.

I was just like you, and I wish I had some advice for making it stop! In the end, I took my giant list of DIY and chucked it in the rubbish bin and just decided that if projects didnt get finished then they werent important enough anyway.

Can I also join this club? I am a person who likes to collect information, data, details, and so my “wedding ideas” folder on my computer is rather large, to say the least. I visit that folder about once a month, and you’d be surprised at how easy it is to delete those “awesome” details that no longer hold their appeal.

I have so little natural DIY inclination! All of the projects I’ve taken on are because of weddingbee and very, very detailed tutorials!
