About Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

Remember my devious plan to elicit tears from our wedding guests? (Quick update: it involves old family photos, sentimental flowers and trinkets.)

I had everything except for the flowers and so turned to our florist to add a few additional blooms to the procurement list. She loved the idea but my chosen flowers are springtime blooms in our area; the likelihood of them being available (read: reasonably priced) would be slim. She suggested I look for silk versions of a calla lily, peony and pansy. While not resistant to using silk flowers, I was skeptical about locating all three. Sure, the calla lily and peony would be a snap, but pansies? I’d never seen a silk version before.

Off Mr. PaC and I went: me to Michaels, him to neighboring Lowes. Imagine my surprise when pansies were the first silk flower I found. With the option of purple or yellow to boot! Two bunches of purple pansies found their way home with me.

There were also several options for calla lilies. I almost bought an off-white one until spotting the crisp white ones.

Finding a suitable peony was tougher. None of them fully represented the “bomb” type of peony flower or bubblegum pink color of our family’s specimen. All the store carried was the “full double” bloom. So I settled on the one below because… it’s close enough to make the point. And the family members who know the difference will appreciate the gesture.

I was still holding out hope that my mom’s peonies would bloom during our wedding week and we’d have the real deal. Alas, it was not meant to be. Mom texted this photo yesterday:

“Look what’s blooming - they couldn’t wait for your wedding!”

Even with a late start and partial-sun location, they’re peaking now. Three weeks early. Their fleeting beauty only lasts a week. Better to know now that we’re using the Plan B silk blooms.

Big thanks to my florist for tipping me off on the seasonality of the blooms and suggesting the use of silk flowers (for so many practical reasons).

Are you using silk or paper flowers to supplement your flowers?

I’m getting married in July. My florist told me to keep my fingers crossed for peonies. She didn’t mention silk though because I honestly don’t want silk EVEN though I usually can’t tell the difference but I have seen peony bouquets at my friends weddings and I love love love them!

I love the silk version of your flowers, but it is really too bad your mom’s bloomed already! Our peonies haven’t bloomed yet, I’ll send you one if they wait until June! :)

Aww, I’m sorry you couldn’t use your family blossoms, but the silk flowers you found look great!

Aw I’m sorry they bloomed early! Have you ever seen the Dennis the Mennis movie? Mr. Wilson had been waiting like 80 years for this flower to bloom, had a huge party to view it, and then of course, Dennis ruined it. This post reminded me of that part ;)

Did you know that you can keep peonies in the fridge for a few weeks and they’ll come out still pretty? We did this for my wedding last year. We had peonies for a July 3rd wedding in Iowa and peonies bloom here in early June or late May. (And we also saw our local florist harvest many of his peonies and lay them out on a shelf in his walk-in refrigerator for future use). The trick is to cut the peonies at the right time - when they’re about to bloom - not fully opened - but not in a tight little ball. They should be voluminous and almost open. Also, your refrigerator has to be relatively dry; otherwise, they’ll mold.

@bRooklynRocks: I’m relieved I didn’t end up choosing peonies - the stress (and cost). They are gorgeous though!!
@Miss Pony: Ooo ooo, please do! ;) What color and bloom type is your peony?
@Mrs. Tartlet: It’s better that it didn’t work out… I would have felt badly for my mom transporting the fragile blooms on a long car ride.
@Miss High Wire: I have and I know the exact scene you’re talking about! Strange that a kid’s movie would stick in my head like that.
@flowergirl: It never occurred to me to keep them in the fridge. It makes sense given that florists have refrigerated cases and walk-ins. We’d have to keep a separate fridge just for the blooms. Would worry about them sharing a fridge with produce, cheese or vinegar (or is that just for fermenting wine?). Thanks for the tip! I’m going to pass it along to my mom, just as an FYI.

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: They are a bright pink, like those in you picture. My grandma planted them a long time ago (we live in her old house) and they are always so pretty, but we never know what to do with them so they go to waste.

I can’t wait to see how this all pulls together—such an absolutely sweet (and sure to be tear-inducing) idea :D The silk flowers are gorgeous!

We’re using ONLY faux flowers, so I could get peonies. But I’m sorry yours have already bloomed. :(

So glad your panned worked out, although not as you originally wanted. I think this will definitely bring in some tear inducement.

@Miss Snow Cone: Your optimistic comment made me smile! (I think they all bloom within a week. My aunt’s bloomed 2 days before my mom’s started. Que sera sera.)
