Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

A Lukewarm Mess is the Worst

May 16th, 2011 @ 9:07 am by Mrs. Magic

Being engaged for a long time has its pluses and minuses. The pluses are that we I have more time to plan, more time to gather inspiration, and more time to save money. The minuses are that I have more time to plan and change my mind, more time to gather inspiration that is different (better?) than the inspiration of last week, and more time to spend money.

It’s six in one hand and a half dozen in the other. Or, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Or… well, I’m sure there is some saying that actually works well here, but really, a long engagement is both a blessing and a curse.

My original inspiration board was nixed by Mr. M for being a bit too country, and looking back I don’t know what the hell I was thinking. Hay bale furniture is cute, but not really us.

Then we decided we would have some tree elements woven throughout the wedding, so I created this board:

From top left, clockwise: montage of beribboned trees via London Bride, my ceremony tree photo, tree guestbook via Jennifer J Designs, Mrs. Sand Dollar’s guest bench, ceremony set-up via Tipi Living Retreat, tree inspiration via The Never

I created a third inspiration board and while it’s pretty cool, I just don’t think it captures all of the wedding inspiration that is currently residing inside my brain…

In fact, I think if I created an inspiration board of the ideas and images that I want to incorporate into our big day, the inspiration board would be enormous. Like, as big as a barn.

I want to make sure that all these elements in my mind go together to create a meaningful, lovely, fun wedding, but I don’t know how to do that. Sometimes things look great in my mind, but then in reality it’s a disaster. I’m worried the elements are going to clash, and the whole thing is gonna look like a hot mess. Or a lukewarm mess. That’s the worst.

So, I’ve decided to create multiple inspiration boards that depict different aspects of the wedding, and your job, dear hive, is to let me know if the boards, when combined together, look like magical awesomeness or a lukewarm mess. But until then…how do you make sure your wedding look is awesome and cohesive?

I totally feel ya on this. I think my “vision” for the wedding has changed a million times, and I am now questioning everything I have done thus-far. Also, the long engagement has forced me into the “I am totally over this wedding biznass” boat. Sigh. Right there with ya, Magic! ;)

I agree! Long engagements are almost bad for the planning process. I have changed my mind and my focus so many times. You’re definitely not alone!

I don’t feel like my “vision” (if you can call it that) has changed, but I just want to add every single awesome thing I come across to our wedding, which I know isn’t possible. I think your idea of multiple inspiration boards sounds like a really good idea. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I never made an inspiration board because I didn’t want to feel “tied down” to it so to speak. I just wanted to include everything that I liked as I went, and so far, everything seems to go together very well.

You should totally check out pinterest!!! If you havent heard of it, its a website where you can create multiple boards, and then save images to the boards from all across the internet. Best thing is, the image becomes a link back to the original location you found it. Seriously has been my saving grace :)

Magic - I feel ya on the long engagement being good and bad on extra time to plan and change your mind. I’m really liking the last two inspiration boards, I think they would go well together!

Oh my gosh so on the same page, miss magic! I *think* my vision will work but not sure…so I have done the same, started imagining each aspect to see if the WHOLE will look good. Can’t wait to see all yours :)

Damn you, Cohesiveness, why do you taunt me so?!!

I understand exactly what you are saying here. I too have a long engagement (over a year) and have ran through several themes in my head. Thanks to the Hive and others I have sorted out what I don’t want in our wedding which has really helped.

I actually did the oposite, I had clippings and bookmarks and such and just recently put together a digital inspiration board to double-check that what was stuffed in my head would come together in matrimonial meltiness (its now a word ;) and found that yes! I too have cohesion!! = A+ for moi!!

I ran into the same doubts and worries, and ended up going with an inspiration board that reflected more of the feel we wanted instead of trying to incorporate all the details we loved!

@michellesol23@hotmail.com: Thanks for answering this for me. It is a gorgeous dress.

From the inspiration boards you posted today, I am totally digging the ribbons hanging from the trees, the cake display, and the s’mores bar.

as another chapel hill bride with a very long engagement my advice is….
1. pick a “feel” of your wedding via a few images and colors, if it doesn’t fit the feel then edit it out
2. keep it simple by sticking to a couple of main ideas. let the details speak about the ideas.
3. i actually printed our inspiration board so i could show it to people and say “i want something like this” because i never knew what to call flowers/centerpieces/ etc and saying “i want to feel/look/be a ocean goddess/southern carolina girl/ not too prissy really makes no sense to most people
