Shoeing the Maids

May 17th, 2011 @ 8:45 am by Mrs. Candy Apple

Now that my bridesmaids all finally have their fab dresses, we need to figure out what sorts of things they should wear with said dresses. You know, shoes and accessories and such.

Honestly, I don’t need or want them to all wear the same shoes or accessories. I don’t really care if they match or not, and I don’t want them to have to go and spend more money on shoes that they may not necessarily like. But, I would like to give them some sort of direction, so they’re not floundering around in the world of shoes with no idea of what to get (Or maybe I’m the only one that flounders around in the world of shoes? There are too many dang options—I get overwhelmed easily). And because, well, I would like them to look at least semi-coordinated, even if they’re not matching perfectly.

Since the groomsmen are all wearing gray suits, I think that neutral colors would work best with the dresses—tans, nudes, light browns, and maybe grays or silvers. This will lend to the soft feel of the color palette, and won’t be a stark contrast to the light lavender color. So, shall we get to some inspiration? Yes, let’s.

I always love a good ballet flat, and I think the look would be particularly nice with the summery silk chiffon. I am also totally digging all of the sparkles that are out there in the fashion world right now. They would kick the look up a notch and add some glam, don’t you think?

I also think that some sort of strappy sandal or wedge heel would be pretty, and would allow their feet to breathe a bit. And by breathe, I mean hopefully not get all sweaty and uncomfortable in the August heat. And, since they will be on their feet a lot during the day, and dancing at night, I don’t want them to have to wear mega-heels. Unless they want to, that is. If they do, I’m okay with that. Here’s a sampling of the styles that caught my eye. I actually want all of these shoes, and am currently restraining myself from going to grab my credit card. Someone stop me.

In terms of jewelry, I am thinking fairly simple necklaces, and either studs or hoops for the earrings. Since the dress is pretty delicate, if it were me, I would go with just a simple pearl necklace and pearl earrings. Because, you know, I’m preppy like that. But really, I’m not too picky, and I don’t have any strong preferences on this. I want them to be able to show their own individual style, after all! So, I also think a cool, bold, chunky statement necklace could look great with this dress. Clearly, no particularly strong feelings here.

What do you guys think - what works best with the Arabelle dress in terms of shoes and accessories? Any shoe suggestions or ideas? Do you think I’m totally off-base with the neutrals?

LOVE the pearls and think they would look perfect. For shoes, I like the color scheme, but what I did is just gave them a color and had them pick their own. Shoes can be uncomfortable if the wrong style is chosen. For instance, I can barely wear ballet flats! I know, they seem universal but I have such a high arch that flats kill me. I’m much better in a low or medium heel.

Those ballet flats are adorable. You should rethink letting your maids pick their own accessories so that they all wear those flats!

@blu77: I’m the same way!! I see people wear flats and I am so envious because after a few minutes, I’m in agony. The flatest I can wear are tennis shoes. CA, why don’t you give them a color and let them run wild? I love the idea of pearls with that delicate dress. BUT, if they do have something that they feel goes more with their outfit i.e., silver/white gold accessories to go with a silver pair of shoes, that wouldn’t be bad.

Loove the flats and both pairs of sandals! I’m also really diggin’ the jewelry choices. If I were one of your BMs I’d totally just let you pick out everything - you’ve got a great sense of style, CA!

I loooove the sparkly flats. They look so chick and hot with the dress! Girls can dress up for heels if they want, but if I was a BM again I think I’d opt for some nice flats.

The jewelry looks spot on too. How can you go wrong with pearls?? :)

The sparkly ballet flats are my fave, and you can’t ever go wrong with a great string of pearls. Lovin’ the BM’s dresses.

My only guideline to my BM on shoes, was they need to be gold. If I were one of your BM I would definitely be rocking pearls and the lilabeth J. Crew leather sandals.

LOVE the glittery flats. And FYI, Target has them for $12.99 instead of $135 (http://www.target.com/Mossimo-Supply-Co-Glitter-Ballet/dp/B0042A9ZAA/ref=sc_pd_gwvub_2_title).

Some sparkly earrings and necklaces might look cute if you go with sparkly shoes…

OMG those glittery flats are the best shoes ever! Unfortunately one of my wedding party members told me that she’ll only be in the wedding on the condition I’ll at least allow her to wear a wedge heel. Argh… ;-)

I think I’d go with a multistrand pearl necklace, but that’s just me :)

I went into this with no thoughts on what shoes the girls should wear. I just didn’t want them to wear black. Turns out they both bought the same dark grey satin heel!

I think a lighter toned shoe or a metallic would look great with those dresses. If you like the sparkles check out Steve Madden - they have a whole slew of different styled sparkly shoes so that way the girls could get something similar, but ultimately pick the style of shoe they like the best.

Ooh, good find @oatmealpie!

@Ms. Ferris Wheel: Ha, one of my BMs is pretty short and only wears heals, so she’ll probably be the odd woman out here :)

@Miss Gazelle: Love that they bought the same shoe! And good call on the Steve Maddens!
