Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Recently, Mr. Snow Cone turned to me and made this official proclamation: “We should figure out what we’re going to have people sign at the wedding.” I met this comment with a combination of surprise and bemusement; he rarely contemplates wedding-planning details, let alone taking the initiative to bring them up in conversation. But when he does, it’s quite endearing, to say the least.

Anyhow, his comment got me thinking about the different guestbook options we have. There’s always the traditional route of having people simply sign their names in a lined book so the couple has a record of who attended their special day. However, in today’s wedding world, there are so many more options with a bit more personality. After a bit of thought and a bit of online research, here’s a completely un-exhaustive list of ideas, broken into categories based on what you want out of your guestbook selection.

For those interested in showing off a passion:

You can have all your guests sign a cherished (or personalized) jersey or piece of sporting equipment, showing off your favorite team!

Have guests sign a handful of your favorite bottles of wine. Some couples even assign a specific milestone to each bottle, denoting when they will open it in celebration, such as their one-year anniversary, closing of their first home purchase, birth of their first child, etc.

For those interested in having something to display year round:

This one’s made its rounds on the blog circuit, but that doesn’t make it any less charming. Have your friends and family “leaf” you a note, courtesy of their fingerprints and signatures.

Lots of couples pick a favorite piece of art or a great engagement picture to have matted, and the guests add their John Hancocks to the mat, making a display-worthy guestbook.

For those interested in having a guestbook that can be stored out of sight:

If you’re looking for an opportunity to have your guests write some advice, as opposed to just a signature, then marriage advice cards are a good option for you. Put the advice cards in a photo album, and it’s a snap to slide it onto a bookcase, out of the way.

A bunch of sites produce really high-quality photo books—Snapfish, AdoramaPix, and Mixbook, for example. Create a digital scrapbook of your favorite engagement pictures and/or your favorite pictures from your courtship, leaving space on the pages for your guests to sign.

Not interested in seeing more of yourself? Consider a coffee-table book highlighting your wedding location, where you met, or your honeymoon destination. Here’s one featuring Washington, D.C.

You missed the best one…FURNITURE! I did a bench for my wedding, and am using a step-stool I built for my baby shower. We also did quilt squares as a wedding guestbook. Wine corks or seashells would be fun to display in a jar. Records also make really fun display pieces with signatures. Then there’s still dishware…. pretty much anything!! The options are endless

Hehe, “courtship.” This is something that is still up in the air for us. Gaah. Should probably get on this…

I love the wine idea - that’s one I’ve never seen before!

Another idea I like is for brides who rent out photo booths - having double photo strips made so guests can paste one photo strip into a scrapbook and then add their signatures and wishes.

Photo booth books! Our guests will keep a strip and then are invited to put the duplicate in the book with a note so we have a scrapbook with there smiling/happy/funny faces.

We went with the sports theme, and had our guests sign a “Play Like a Champion Today” sign. It was a big hit!

I’ve been so overwhelmed by all the options for this that I haven’t chosen anything yet!
I told Mr CB I was worried about it, and he said ‘well, I can drive us to Michaels and we can pick one up there, can’t we?’. I think it’s the only time I’ve ever refused a trip to Michaels in my life! All I could picture was puffy white lacy glued-on-pearl-y things, which is probably totally wrong and not what they carry, but I was stuck with that image in my head!

Buy a large wooden letter (2 or 3 feet high) of your last inital and have everyone sign it. Although the jersey idea is my favorite.

I’m designing a Quaker style wedding certificate! Not that I’m a graphic designer by any means, but it will get the job done! I look forward to framing it along with either our invitation or wedding picture afterwards and hanging it in our bedroom!

I love guestbooks that double as a work of art. That last idea with the coffee-table book is so great!

Oooh, the wine + milestone idea is so great!

I’m an artist and FI is a musician, so we split our passions. I’m providing a large, blank canvas marked off in grids, and a few jars of coordinating paint colors. Guests pick a square and paint whatever they want! For the musician side, we’ve got a beat-up, old acoustic guitar for folks to sign with a sharpie - very rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia-esque! Guests can choose to sign whichever option they like (or both!). We’ll hang both finished items on the wall next to each other in our den.

@DeaconBride: I love the letter idea!

@Mrs. Sand Dollar: You’re right she forgot furniture!! Your posts on your awesome guest book bench inspired me to think out if the box for our guest book as well… my fiance and my dad’s friend who is very good with wood work, are making a hope chest and we’re going to have all our guests sign the inside of the lid with hopes & well wishes :-) THANK YOU Mrs, Sand Dollar for inspiring me!!

We are doing the baseball jersey since we’re getting married at a baseball stadium. I really really love the picture mat with signatures and the engagement photo book too. Oh! And if we have a photo booth we could have c opy of the pictures and people leave little notes next to them! I could seriously have like 4 guestbooks. LOL

We did a ivory Gibson Les Paul guitar since my husband is a musician/guitarist to the stars. It was very heavily talked about - the coolness factor- and also it will look FANTASTIC hanging in our new home.

I’ve never seen the wine bottle before - what a cool idea! We’re having a vineyard wedding so that would be perfect.

We’re going to get a ceramic platter from one of those “Paint your own pottery” places and have guests sign it. We’ll take it back to the shop, glaze, and fire it. Then we can use it as a serving dish for family gatherings and holidays!
