About Mrs. Pony

I Love Lighting. And Lamp.

May 17th, 2011 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Pony

Our reception venue is a gigantic white ballroom. It is 11,644 square feet of white, open space. One of our biggest obstacles throughout wedding planning has been finding ways to make this huge room feel more intimate while infusing color and personality into the room.

Here are some images of how our venue can be transformed with the addition of some fancy lighting:

You hardly notice the awful chairs! Hardly.

This is the image that convinced us to have lighting.

We talked to a few vendors that quoted us astronomical prices for lighting our reception space. One place said we would need 50–60 lights at a cost of $250 for four (FOUR!) lights. That would be almost four grand for lighting. Hellz no. After these discussions, I was pretty much resigned to the fact that uplighting would be a luxury we simply could not afford at our wedding.

And then we found the uplighting angel (AKA our DJ).

At our initial meeting, our DJ not only quoted us an amount that was thousands cheaper than other companies, but because we wanted to rent so many lights, he also gave us a deep discount on our lights. *Cue the choir* We signed the contract immediately, and I had to pinch myself to believe our good fortune. We asked for 30 lights for the low price of—wait for it—only $10 a light. (I know, I am super lucky.)

But, now that have booked lighting for our wedding…we need to decide what color should be lighting up our wedding reception.

As discussed (ad nauseam), our colors are red, green, and gray with some white thrown in there for good measure.

We could go with green lighting:

Green is my favorite color…BUT I’m afraid that a room full of green uplighting will look like an alien landing is about to occur in our reception venue. I think the light green lighting in the second picture is less alien attack, and more of the soft, elegant look we are going for.

We could play up the red in our color scheme:

I think the above image is gorgeous and looks very elegant. But, red can be overdone very easily. You see, in college, I painted my tiny 10’ x 10’ room red. Bright red. On all four walls. You could literally see my room glowing from the street. My roommates (appropriately) called it the hell room. If we choose to feature red on the walls, we will need to be careful not to overdo it and make our guests feel as if they entered the underworld.

Or we could do simple, white lighting:

I love how the white lighting looks so sophisticated when paired with the candlelight in this room. But, wouldn’t white lighting defeat the purpose of spending money on uplighting? Given that one of the reasons for including lighting is to infuse some color into our reception space, using white lighting seems like a wasted opportunity. I love the look in this picture because it emphasizes the color on the wall, but the effect would be lost on our all white room.

I’m at a loss. Thankfully we have some time to decide which color we want to incorporate into our reception venue.

What color do you suggest? Or would you go with a mix of colors?

White lighting is great for a romantic setting - however it ONLY works for spaces that have colored walls/drapery. Your space looks like it has white walls and white columns which will not leave the effect that you are looking for unless you add colored drapery.

Go with the red! I’ve used it for quite a few weddings and it looks fantastic - definitely stay away from over saturating the space with color. The whole point is to add contrast to make certain elements POP, as opposed to washing everything to one color. :o)

Could you alternate white with that pretty light green? Does it work like that or would that just look crazy? It seems like it would soften the room without being so….green! Awesome find on the lighting deal!!

I love the red lighting! Plus I think it will make all your accent colors pop (you know, in whatever way you plan to decorate everything else with the green and gray and white!)

Please talk to your photographer before you pick a color. He/She would have had enough experiences working with uplights. My photog told me expressly to stay away from green for various reasons but that’s just my photog. I decided to go with amber uplights. Like you, I was getting ridiculous quotes till I saw someone who gave me for $15 and I was really excited about it.

I’ve been looking into lighting for my reception venue as well but actually don’t want a “color.” I was told by one lighting company that amber is actually a good alternative to plain white. I don’t know how that would work with your colors, but maybe you could consider amber as an option. Good luck!!

Amber is a great color, it ends up looking like candlelight, whereas white against the white walls may not work.

OMG–do NOT do green–it would make everyone look like they are sick. The red would be nice–just do a few accent walls or something. I would also look into doing a gold or amber color–not one of “your colors” but not everything has to be

Avoid the green, it does awful things to most people’s skin color. I think red and some “white” would look nice. I put white in quotes becuase if you get the level of the light a little bit lower (not on full blast, 80% or below), it gives off a nice amber effect, which could go really nice with some red lights.

What about red on the pillars and white on the walls? Or vice versa? That way, you get some color without going overboard!

I like bannanaramas idea, but with white and red instead, but I don’t know if that would like crazy either. I love the red in the picture you posted, but I thought maybe adding white would downplays it if you were worried about it being too bright. I don’t know, haha.

I like the warmth that the white lighting brings the best, actually but the red looks really nice too - I suppose which red you are using in your color scheme and how much will determine your final decision.

Perhaps some red or green lighting special for the bar and other areas but white for the majority?? (green is my fav too :))

I’m having a similar question about the uplighting at our venue - really wanting blue but not wanting to overdo it and/or look like it’s a Little Mermaid-themed reception. I think the red lighting, with some restraint, would look gorgeous - just as it does in that picture. The white is really nice as well, but definitely less colorful. Either would be beautiful in their own way.

We will have red lighting when guests enter the reception room and then will change colors during the course of the night (eg. soft blue during dinner & amber during toasts, etc). So I say, start with red and then switch between the green and white/amber for the rest of the evening.

I think it’s all the years I’ve worked in theater, but I love lighting. I really hope I have the budget to include uplighting and gobos at my wedding.

I loved our uplighting (which we got from our DJ too!). I think the red would look really good!
