Sticking With It

May 18th, 2011 @ 9:41 am by Mrs. Pony

A while ago, I mentioned wanting to make magnets to hold up our escort cards based on this tutorial. So, on a cold Sunday morning, Mr. Pony and I set out to make some magnets of our own to use as part of our escort-card display.

We made ours slightly differently than the tutorial, so I figured a DIY post was in order.

First we gathered our supplies: 3/4″ glass bead things (apparently called “marble accents”…who knew?), table letters cut into 3/4″ circles (courtesy of my Cricut, cursing, and many failed attempts), 3/4″ card stock cut for backings, Mod Podge, paint brush, 1/2″ magnets, and hot glue gun (not pictured).

After much thought and discussion, decide which letters will denote your tables at the reception. No reason to make more than you need.

Using your paintbrush, apply the Mod Podge to the flat side of the marble accent.

Next, put your letter on the Mod Podge. There is a chance that the ink will smear, so be careful with the placement.

Press the paper into the glass to get rid of any air bubbles and position the letter so that it is centered in the glass. The Mod Podge will look a little cloudy at first, but it will dry clear.

Apply some more Mod Podge to the back of the card-stock circle and stick it on the glass/letter. You should probably let the glue dry before you go to the next step, but it luckily dries quickly, leaving enough time to locate your hot glue gun in your boxes of craft supplies.

After the glue dries sufficiently, you can glue the magnet to the paper/glass contraption you have now made. We hot-glued as a two-person team to ensure that we utilized the glue at its hottest temperature. We didn’t get any pictures of this process, but here’s what they looked like with everything glued together:

Do this about 140 more times and you get a big pile of magnet letters:

Our finished project!

For only a morning of work (minus the Circut issues) and less than $20, I am very happy with how our DIY magnets turned out! The plan is to have these hold up each guest’s place card. Now we need something to display the cards on…

What do you think? How would you display these as part of an escort-card display?

I love these alphabet magnets, Miss P! I can’t wait to see what your escort display looks like. :)

They are so cute! Magnets like that have been on my to-do list for around the home. (Wedding to-do lists have sort of pushed them to the back burner!)

I am not sure how you feel about this- but most cookie sheets are magnetic (I think the non-stick ones may not be.) You could spray paint them, drill two holes in the top and string some cute ribbon through and then hang them. (You’d probably want to do cookie sheets that are flat.)

So cute! Maybe you could try a magnetic dry erase board and remove the edges, spray paint them or add some cute ribbon embellishment, and then put them on there?

Why don’t you do giant metal letters that spell out something like LOVE. Spray paint the letters in magnetic paint, then spray over with a bright candy apple red, then after the wedding you have some really cool wall art!

Maybe something like these letters, only a little flatter?

You could do an alchemy request on etsy!

the cookie sheet idea (above) is a great way to display… rustic.
you might also want ot take a look at IKEA if you have one in your area… lots of magnetic boards .
oh, or a picture frame with magnetic paint, you can paint the frame any color you like… the possibilities are endless.

also, take a look at apartmenttherapy.com, they have LOTS of magnetic projects to (steal) get inspiration from!!

@KCheer: @Mrs. Ostrich: @Miss High Wire: Thanks ladies!
@BelleoftheNorth: I never thought of that, what a great idea!
@kappasweetiepie: I like this too! You could write instructions right on the board!
@ktisthatbees: I thought alchemy was dead, no? If it’s back, etsy better watch out, I’m coming for them! I really like your idea, especially being able to use them later in our home!

I made a bunch of these with our engagement photos as favors for the guests. The problem I had was that the ink on the photos got discolored from the glue, causing a green tint on the black and white pics and a general color smearing on the color pics. Maybe I used the wrong kind of glue? The stuff I bought was specifically for decoupage, so I don’t know what else I could have used. I ended up just making a ton of extras so I could weed out the worst of them at the end.

Like!! I’ve seen at crafting shows where cookie sheets were carefully covered in fabric (you could use spray on glue to achieve) and then used to display home-crafted magnets that were for sale- perhaps something like that would work?

Ooh, I’ve totally been wanting to make something like this to use as escort cards or place cards. I just couldn’t think of an easy way to make them useful for that purpose. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
