A week before our marriage-preparation class was supposed to take place, these colourful booklets arrived at our house. That’s right—a pre-marriage preparation course workbook because we are preparing to prepare!

I drew eyes on my people because they were missing them. And I like to be different…
The booklet started out with a 20-question survey of “how well you know your partner” and then went on with sections about family, friendships, relationships, sex, money, problem solving, and so on. I admit, I had a lot of fun filling out the 10-page booklet for nearly three hours. Mr. Funnel Cake didn’t take quite that long filling his out, but he was much more concise. I kept adding little bits that seemed important to write down…
I was a little nervous as we handled each other our surveys to check how well we knew each other, but we both gave each other 100% scores!

We kissed each other, excited that we knew each other well enough to know favourite childhood memories, life ambitions, favourite movies, etc. Some of the questions we didn’t actually know how to answer ourselves, but the answers written by each other were great. For example, neither of us really has an absolute favourite memory as a kid, but Mr. Funnel Cake realised he did really enjoy his summers in Brazil as a child, and I admitted that I do have very fond memories of my family’s big road trip to California.
I was very intrigued by the information the booklet made us talk about because it can be difficult prodding Mr. Funnel Cake to talk about certain topics and some other things we just didn’t think about discussing…such as the fighting styles of our parents. I was most surprised to learn that:
A. Mr. Funnel Cake wants “two children, not more or less” in his words. For a guy who doesn’t want to discuss babies if I’m not pregnant, I was really surprised he would say “not more or less,” and I was happy to learn this, too. (But we can wait on babies—for a long time, I promise!)
B. Mr. Funnel Cake’s parents have not always been 100% happy and have fought a fair amount in their marriage. I was also very surprised to learn that Mr. Funnel Cake’s parents even talked about divorce and that they used to shout at each other when arguing. Mr. FC says they seem to have mellowed out with age, but I was a little disturbed to learn of this negativity.
For me, filling out the booklets reaffirmed that Mr. Funnel Cake is the right man for me to be marrying and that we have a pretty good style of communication and solving problems. I enjoyed exploring our relationship on paper and started to look forward to the course as it approached.
What kinds of things reassure you that you’ve picked a good mate?
