Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

We’re less than a month away from the wedding, which means it’s the perfect time for me to begin having irrational concerns about the wedding and, more importantly, my wedding-day appearance. This week’s freak-out is all about the teeth. Specifically, I have two main concerns: color and straightness.

WORRY: COLOR

Who doesn’t want white teeth any day of the week, let alone on a day when a few hundred people will be staring at you and snapping a few hundred photos? I’m really nervous that I’ll be less than thrilled with the whiteness of my teeth come wedding day. I have visions of getting the photos back and having a reaction similar to this series of events:

Video via YouTube

I don’t want the term “mother of pearl” to even pass through my mental registry on, or after, the wedding day. I want to be able to flash my grin with complete and total confidence, knowing it’s undeniably white.

PLAN OF ATTACK: COLOR

This isn’t my first time around the teeth-whitening block. I have a multi-pronged approach, figuring at least one of these tricks has to work.

My strategy is to employ as many whitening products as I can over a long period of time, hoping to produce a gradual effect without shocking my mouth into hyper-sensitivity.

Mouthwash via Our Thrifty Ideas / Toothpaste via Cha-ching on a Shoestring / Whitening Strips via Best Buy to Low / Collage made by me

I’m hoping that if I consistently employ a combo-attack of whitening toothpaste and whitening mouthwash over the next few weeks, I’ll see a noticeable difference. Then, as I get closer to the actual wedding day, I’ll pounce with the whitening strips, finishing the job up right.

WORRY: STRAIGHTNESS

My teeth are pretty straight, courtesy of two-and-a-half years of awesomely cool braces.

However, my teeth aren’t 100% straight, courtesy of my lack of retainer wearing for the past five years or so. I know it’s an imperfection that only I would notice about myself, but it’s become a nagging voice in the back of my head. I’ve almost convinced myself that my glaring dental-alignment issues will be visible to everyone in each and every one of our wedding photos. Hence the freak-out.

PLAN OF ATTACK: STRAIGHTNESS

I was a diligent retainer-wearer for the five years after my braces were removed. The last thing I wanted was another round of metal mouth. However, when I went to college and being cool trumped having perfectly straight teeth, the retainers got the boot. But, not before I convinced my parents to buy me a new set of retainers to replace the biohazards I’d been wearing for the previous five years. So, in order to try and alleviate my straight-teeth concerns, I’ve dug out my “new” set from five years ago and have been wearing them for a couple hours every couple of days. I know that this miniscule amount of time won’t do poo-diddly, but I can only handle wearing them for a bit at a time, since they’re pretty much pushing my teeth in directions my teeth aren’t interested in going. I figure if I keep this little game up, either the discomfort will go away or I’ll just get better at ignoring it, and I can eventually get to the point where I sleep in retainers through the night…like the mature, grown woman I am.

Just in case neither of these plans of attack works to allay my dental concerns, I do have a little trick up my sleeve. I just take a peek at our engagement pictures: no off-kilter teeth or stains to be seen. Either my smile is better than I give it credit for, or our photographer is even more awesome than I give her credit for!

Oh my goodness! Thank you for posting this. I have been worrying about two things: my weight and my teeth!! I even recently went back to my old orthodontis to look into getting a new retainer. If I can afford it, I am going to do it. FYI: your teeth look gorgeous already so don’t stress too much about it!

Your teeth look great! No need to worry! I had the same concerns and then they looked fine in the pics. I’m glad I didn’t spend like $500 to get them whitened at the dentist.

I think your teeth already look damn good. I hope you do some before/after series of posts though so we can see any changes!

ive been worried about whites too. my teeth are sensitive so i cant use whitening strips too often, BUT rembrandt has a mouthwash that whitens and also strengthens your enamel (which decreases sensitivity). i highly recommend it! also use sensodyne toothpaste if youre going to use a lot of whitestrips (helps with the “zings” of pain afterward). i also got a free sample of the 3D professional effects white strips and noticed a difference that very day! so im going to use those the week before my wedding. good luck!

Your teeth and your smile are beautiful! Of course we all have our own concerns, but from this angle, no need to worry snow cone!

You should try the Rembrandt whitening mouthwash (I’ve only been able to find it at Target though). It works AMAZING, and I noticed a difference in just a week. All the reviews out there say it’s the best one.

You sound exactly like me on the straightening! Every once in a while I get sooo upset about the one tooth that’s moved out of place, that I demand that I’ll need invisalign braces soon to fix it! I can’t get my darn bottom retainer in anymore, though…you’re lucky!

Ooh, sounds like Rembrandt is the one to try!

I had braces for 3 years, and my teeth are definitely not straight now, 12 years and very little retainer-wearing after the fact! I’ve learned to live with it though, because anything is better than the buck teeth and giant overbite I had before the braces!

I didn’t wear my retainers after braces and now my teeth aren’t straight on the bottom. I wish there was enough money laying around to do Invisalign before the wedding, but who has a bunch of money laying around while planning a wedding? Not this gal.

You’ve got a fabulous set of chompers as is, SC!!! I totally feel ya tho…I want neon white teeth for the wedding. Lol. Think Ross in that Friends episode! OK…maybe not that white. Anyway, I’ve got tiny little rat teeth (seriously…I don’t know how my “baby teeth” were any smaller). I envy your teeth!

My teeth are naturally a very dull beigy color (blame my father’s genetics for that) and are something I constantly battle.

I’ve had really good luck with Crest 3D whitening pre-brush rinse and toothpaste.

You have a beautiful smile already, SC! I use that Colgate whitening toothpaste daily with no sensitivity problems.

My worries were your exact same worries, plus looking too skinny. I did what I could to make everything better, but in the end could not change much, which was perfectly fine. What I did put a lot of effort into was preparing myself mentally, repeating to myself that it was ok to look the way I did, that everything was in my head, and that no matter how I was on on that day I would still look perfect. And it really was. Keep in mind that beauty comes from within. If you are comfortable with yourself, it will show. Don’t forget to untag the unflattering pictures. ;)

Ah yes, I remember that commercial. Those kids crack me up…
“ecru….beige….” hehe!
Anyhow, I’m planning on whitening my teeth. Guess I ought to get around to it! I had custom made trays years ago that I recently found in my bathroom so I just need to get the whitening goo from my dentist. My hygienist was telling me on my last visit that white strips worked really well and it wasn’t worth splurging for trays if I didn’t already have them.

I am going to steal your multi prong approach for whitening my teeth and maybe I should consider wearing my retainers again so my teeth don’t slip back. They really haven’t moved in the last few years, while I have been sans retainer. Maybe pop a advil before wearing the retainer and that will help with the discomfort and prolong wearing time.

I always laugh at orthodontists cuz as long as you wear your retainers on most nights, your teeth stay straight and no one knows the difference. No need to wear them all day, every day :)
I lost my retainers once and had to wait a few months to get new ones, and by that time I had a similar problem to you (though I’m sure five years really sucks!). What I did was I put them in at night like normal, but for the first few nights I took advil before I went to bed. It made it much more bearable and I could sleep through the night, and then my teeth soon moved enough so I didn’t need advil :) just a suggestion!
