Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Favors for Family

May 20th, 2011 @ 5:58 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

Mr. Snow Cone and I never really considered doing favors. We weren’t too gung-ho about putting together a couple hundred of a certain item, only to end up with many being left at the table at the end of the night. We didn’t want to hand off some random piece of junk to our guests that they have absolutely no need for…it would be a waste on multiple levels for everyone involved. However, having the guests leave the reception without any sign of gratitude from us was simply not an option.  Thankfully, we came up with a way to express our thanks to our guests without going the traditional favor route.

Our answer? The charitable donation. Mr. Snow Cone and I were able to come up with any number of causes we deemed worthy of getting a little extra funding as a result of our wedding. Sure, all of our guests might not necessarily appreciate this approach. Some may disagree with our idea to do charity donations at all, and some may disagree with our charity of choice. At the risk of sounding rude, that’s not really a concern of ours. We really like the idea of expressing some generosity in conjunction with our grandiose celebration, and we’ve found a cause that we feel strongly about. So, regardless of our guests’ opinions on the matter, our minds are made up.

As a result, we will be donating to pancreatic-cancer research on behalf of our wedding guests. We selected this cause because of its personal connection to me. On February 2, 2010, my grandfather passed away from this horrific disease. His battle against the cancer was relatively brief but certainly not painless. My family’s suffering was immense, but still paled in comparison to the difficulties he endured. All of the treatment, appointments, and testing still only bought him a handful of additional months. It was completely devastating to see how, in the matter of less than 12 months, an individual could be transformed from someone who walks daily for exercise to someone who struggles immensely to walk down the hallway of his own home. The silver lining in all of this suffering is that his disease brought together my extended family in a way that I don’t think any of us thought was possible. Even though he is no longer alive, the impression he made on my family is stronger than ever.

Through donating to pancreatic-cancer research, we’re hoping to honor his memory and help even the tiniest bit to prevent another family from enduring the suffering that this dreadful disease causes.

Love this!! We are also doing a donation to a few of the charities closest to our hearts - City of Hope because I work there and my fiancee’s grandma just passed away from cancer, and World Vision because we sponsor kids in Africa through them. Most people have been supportive of the idea so far, but we have had a few complain. I’ve adopted the same attitude as you though - I just let it roll off my back! :)

Miss SC, I feel that charitable donations in lieu of traditional favors are an excellent idea always.
I am truly sorry for your loss; my FH just lost his only aunt to pancreatic cancer last year so we can empathize - it is a horrible disease. God bless!

My mom died of pancreatic cancer - she went from a vibrant woman, walking almost 10 miles in a single day with me in mid-September of 2004, to a frail shell of her former self when she died in early March, 2005. It’s an awful, incredibly fast-moving cancer. I’m sorry for the loss of your grandfather, but grateful for your donation.

We’re registered with Simple Registry, and we’re encouraging guests to make a donation in our honor to the Human Rights Council in support of marriage equality and the It Gets Better project.

We are making a donation to canadian diabetes association in lieu of favors. Our donation will also be in memory of my mom who passed away from the effects of diabetes. She passed away 2 months after we got engaged. So I am using it as a way to honor my moms memory.

We’re using Project Angel Heart in Denver, Colorado. They provide nutrient-rich meals for people living with life-threatening illnesses and rock my world.

I think it’s awesome that you’re donating to a cause that’s so close to you! I can’t believe anyone would complain about that. I love the idea of taking part of an expensive celebration and turning it into a meaningful generous gesture

We’re probably going to donate our favor part of the budget to Heifer International. I love them because they don’t just give the livestock animals that you buy to communities, they also train them in how to take care of them and ask them to pass on the offspring and training to others. And I love the idea of telling our guests that we bought a goat in their honor. ;)

My grandfather also died of pancreatic cancer (though before I was born). I think it’s great to donate in lieu of favors! I’m thinking about donating to St. Jude’s. I ran a half marathon to raise money for them before, and I have a soft spot in my heart for children’s charities.

I love this option, SC. I think it’s an amazing way to pay tribute to your grandfather while also aiding in a great cause. My grandma died of pancreatic cancer (before I was born) but I’m always amazed at how little headway has been made in curing the disease since her death over 35 years ago. I think you’ve made a fantastic choice, lady ;)

Nice one! We’re doing the Breast Cancer Foundation for my nanna - who’s still alive and kicking its butt. (I love her!)

I work in cancer research and am directly involved in creating trials for GI cancers (including pancreatic). Unfortunately, there have been few advances in the treatment for pancreatic cancer and more research needs to be done. Your donation is an amazing gift that will be put towards a really difficult challenge. Thank you for supporting a very important cause!!

I am an oncology nurse and have been debating whether or not to donate to the The American Cancer Society in lieu of favors. We already have our favors finished but I still feel like we need to contibute in another way. My grandfather lost his battle to Prostate Cancer 4 years ago and there isnt a day that goes by that I dont think of him. I think donating is a fantastic idea! Screw the people who don’t agree ;)

We are doing a donation to Wounded Warriors or some other military foundation since my fiance is in the Army. We are probably still going to do some little treat like chocolate covered pretzals only to have something to attach the detail card to.

My groomsman has pancreatic cancer. The only reason they caught it was because he has skin cancer. He is not even 30 yet and I don’t know if he’ll make it to my wedding day in March. I hope your donation helps some.
