About Mrs. High Wire

The engagement party is a great way to announce and celebrate your engagement. News travels FAST these days, so it is safe to say this is more of a chance to celebrate the engagement, rather than announce it.

They are a great opportunity to get your closest family and friends together for a happy occasion. It is also a good time for those who are nearest and dearest to all meet each other for the first time, if you all come from different areas.

The engagement party does give you a push to get your wedding-guest list together early, since traditional etiquette for this event says you should not invite anyone to the engagement party who isn’t invited to the wedding.

Who hosts?

Traditionally, the parents of the bride host the first party, but today that isn’t a steadfast rule. Sometimes the bride and groom can host it themselves. Or, the groom’s parents can host. A friend of the couple can also volunteer to host it!

What kind of party is it?

Any style from a formal affair to a pool party is appropriate. A cocktail party with heavy hors d’oeuvres is always a safe bet.

When is it held?

Engagement parties are generally held one to three months after the engagement. For others, they can be held at any time more than six months before the wedding.

What about gifts?

Etiquette for engagement parties dictates that guests should not bring gifts. However, the announcement of an engagement party may get some guests thinking about gifts, and they may start asking about where you are registered. It is a good idea to at least get your registry started, if you plan on doing one, by the time the party rolls around.

**Gift-etiquette note: Any gifts that you receive before the wedding (like, say, at an engagement party) generally need a thank you note within two weeks of receiving the gift.

High Wire engagement party

I thought I’d give a little sneak peek into what’s planned! Mr. High Wire’s parents have so graciously stepped forward to host the engagement party for us in their hometown.

The party is taking place Abilene, Texas. Our party will be in the hotel restaurant with good eats, good drinks, and good music. Sounds like a blast to me!

Our connection to the place

The hotel itself houses one of our favorite hangout spots when we come to town. The hotel bar always has great drinks and awesome live music, and you’ll always run into someone you know.

One of my BBFs (and bridemaids) is from Abilene! Also, I just have to mention that you have the most gorgeous hair.

I kinda wanted to have an engagement party, but we couldn’t get it together to plan one. Looks like yours will be a lot of fun!

I love engagement parties even though we didn’t have one–more celebrating is always a good thing!

Really, the bride’s parents do the engagement party, too? Did they EVER get off the hook? ;)

My in-laws had a mini-engagement party for us last weekend with FI’s extended family. Since I don’t have family in town, we’re throwing our own second engagement party when my parents come to visit next weekend and inviting our wedding party and friends.

We never had an engagement party. It sounds fun to do it somewhere you already like to hang out!

We have not had an engagement party. But I do think they are a really fun idea. We will be having a little wedding-party party with the members of our wedding party just so that everyone can meet each before the wedding. I doubt this is a unique idea, but we are excited about planning it.

We are hosting our engagement party in September. We have a 2 year engagement & the engagement party is almost 1 year after our engagement & 1 year away from our wedding. Our theme is Hawaiian luau & my FH is excited about the pig he’s getting - whereas I am not thrilled about a dead pig with an apple in its mouth starring at me the whole day. I’m looking forward to having our family mingle & meet before the bridal shower & wedding events.

We are having an engagement party this upcoming July. It is more of our friends and close family friends who will be attending (not out of town guests). The groom’s parents are hosting it and it is casual like a BBQ kind of thing. More of a reason to get people together to party. I guess its not as common here since none of our previous friends who got married had an engagement party. We aren’t expecting gifts or anything since its casual.. They can always give us wine if they want to :P We will have been engaged for 5 months by when we have our party.

Mr. Oregon and I are currently planning an e-party in August as a way for us to get our families together a little more. We are thinking of a “Backyard Barbeque” since our wedding is going to be a little more formal.

So fun!
