Mrs. Seal's Picture
Mrs. Seal, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Personal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support Specialist Engagement Date: December 12, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently Reserve About Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.

Honoring the Veterans

May 20th, 2011 @ 4:43 pm by Mrs. Seal

So remember how the Seals chose to get married on November 11th? Just in case you’re unfamiliar with the importance of this date in the US, I’ll clue you in—it’s Veterans Day. This was definitely something that Mr. Seal and I took into consideration. Both of my late grandparents and several of my uncles served in the military and both the Sealman and I have a few cousins currently serving—we don’t want to take away from the importance of this day by any means.

So in an effort to pay homage to our beloved veterans and thank them for sharing their day with us (as many will physically be in attendance on the day) we’ve devised a plan!

Think a family photo display like Mrs. Jellyfish’s - except the pictures will be entirely devoted to our vets past and present.

On the left is my Grandpa Alfonso (a veteran of the Navy) and on the right is my Papa Albert (a former Merchant Marine)

The centerpiece to this table will be my Grandpa Alfonso’s burial flag (encased as shown below). I know that may sound a bit somber but I really don’t think it will come off as such once surrounded by the photos of our smiling friends and family.

I like the idea of being able to simultaneously showcase our family history and pay homage to our veterans for their dedicated service.

What do you think? Are you displaying old family photos? Does your wedding date fall on a national holiday? Are you working this into the wedding somehow?

Aw, what a neat and special tribute, Seal! Very personal, and a good reminder of the day.

Umm… okay, I totally didn’t know our wedding date was Veteran’s Day. I feel awful! Thanks for clueing me in, Seal. We also have some loved ones who are current/former service members, so we’ll have to consider how to appropriately pay our respects.

Not only are we doing a family photo table, I’m also paying homage to our relatives who’ve served by displaying a photo of them in uniform. Right now I have 3/4 of the photos for the display. To steal a line from Mrs. Lioness, BBC! ;)

@Ms. Ferris Wheel: Heheh, no problem! I’m sure you’ll come up with somethin’ perfect :D

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: Awwe…that’s awesome! I’m jealous you’re almost done—I’m having such a difficult time tracking down pics of everyone in uniform so I may have to settle on whatever pics I can find. AND YES…BBC IS RIGHT! :D

I love that you have included the significance of the day in your special day. We are including a fallen soldiers table as every male in my family has served our country.

I’m a softie for Veterans (I work at a veteran’s hospital, after all) so I love this idea.
Also, did you know that Congress decided that the word Veteran must always be capitalized?

PS, I always forget to, so I get nasty emails from management every couple of months.

I think the flag + photos sounds appropriately reflective but still a great addition to a party. Good planning, S!
