About Mrs. Balloons

I told you how the term “rustic” is sort of the backbone behind our reception planning. Rustic means different things to different people. For us, I mentioned we want it to invoke vibes like earthy, vintage, woodsy, woodland, forest, shabby-chic. I realize that a lot of people think of a “rustic” theme as being “so last year.” I agree that it was definitely one of the most featured themes scattered across the blogosphere over the past year, but for me personally it never got old. It might be because I actually have never been to, seen pictures, or heard of a wedding featuring such ideas in the area I’m from.

I LOVED Miss Magic’s post on how even though some of these ideas seem so old and unoriginal to us bridal-blogging freaks, a lot of other people have never heard of them or seen them executed before. To be honest, I’m not worried if anyone thinks it’s an overdone concept because it encompasses who we are as a couple the best, and there will be plenty of personal and unique touches to make it our own. OK, done ranting on theme…on to our DIY rustic wedding signs!

Remember how I told you that there is an old house that we’ll be burning down on the land where our at-home reception will be held? I’ve decided to incorporate pieces of it into our reception! Behold the lovely, weathered siding boards:

First, Mr. B and I decided on some wording that we would want featured. So far we’ve come up with:

  • parking
  • s’mores
  • beer
  • dancing
  • reception (to place along the roadside as guests are getting closer)

I started by taking a carpenter’s pencil and outlining the letters.

Then Mr. B cut the board into an arrow shape.

I picked up an assorted pack of paintbrushes to experiment with which size would be the best for painting the lettering. The purple brush is the one I ended up using.

Ta-da! Here’s the parking sign:

I continued painting some of the other signs, but they can’t get arrows until we figure out which way they should point.

So there you have it—progress. We’re also working on some rustic log benches! I’ll be posting those soon, too. How are your DIY projects coming along?

I love rustic too, and agree that even though its featured in blogland, doesn’t mean its overdone! Great job with the signs!!

I need to get going on making some signs, too! I was picturing something pretty similar to what you’ve made; I think mine will be a little bigger. Our wedding is going to be out in the country in an area many guests are unfamiliar with, so we plan on having signs at either end of the road where the venue is to help people find us. I hope ours turn out as lovely as yours!
