Wine After Wine

May 20th, 2011 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Pony

In addition to the beer and other spirits that we will be serving at our wedding, we are going to personally select wines for our guests to enjoy at our reception. Our plan is to select several varieties of wine that have meaning to us both separately and as a couple.

For instance, we visited Maryhill Winery on a whim while traipsing through Washington with Mr. Pony’s brother a couple years back. It was my first time visiting a winery and I loved it! Had we not had to fly back to Illinois the next day, you bet your ass we would have brought several bottles back with us to enjoy.

We are also planning to serve wine from the winery we are getting married at; a winery we visited in Bloomington, Indiana with friends; one from Oregon close to where FMIL Pony grew up; one from the Umbria region of Italy where Mr. Pony’s brother lived and they visited a few years ago; and one from West Tennessee where Mr. Pony grew up.

I realized as I typed this that most of these wines represent Mr. Pony and his family, but lest you think I will not be represented in our wine selections, we are going to class it up at our reception with my newest favorite wine cooler, some Peach Sparkletini:

Thus far, we plan to have about nine different wines, including four reds and at least five whites. To explain our choices to our guests, we will make cute little signs to explain the background of our seemingly random choices, much like this adorable sign from Mrs. Peep Toe:

We are very excited about this “project,” mostly because it includes tasting a lot of different wines to find the perfect selections for our wedding. Yay, drinking lots of wine!

Mr. Pony is pretty much a wine snob, whereas I adhere to the Michael Scott school of fine food and drink, only differentiating between reds, whites, and Boonesfarm, so this might be an interesting project to complete. Somehow we will power through. Somehow.

Our first tasting selection was this weekend, as we were tasting two different pinot noirs from the Willamette Valley region of Oregon where FMIL Pony grew up.

Do you have wines special to you and your SO? Does anyone else drink Peach Sparkletini and LOVE it?

Wow, we’re only having 4 wines at our wedding (also at a vineyard) and I thought that was a lot! maybe I should reconsider…

@Miss High Wire: Yes I love wine, but I love cheap wine coolers even more (never grew out of my college days, I guess)
@toshella: Well, we realize we’re going a little crazy on the wine, but our families LOVE wine and will probably drink more of it than sweet tea (which is saying a lot).

Mr. B doesn’t really care for wine at all, but I love it! Working at a winery definitely has it’s perks :) That’s awesome that you are having such a variety~ your guests will love it!

Our go-to has always been Blackstone Merlot… We just tried Cupcake Red Velvet last night and it was pretty tasty! :) We aren’t snobs, per se, but we know what we like- which is usually red!

We just went on a wine tour in Sutton’s Bay, MI for our 1st anniversary, and it was great!

The Peach Sparkletini looks just like this Verdi wine we have here in the Philadelphia area. It is sooooooooooooo good!!! They have several flavors, including one that is comparable to regular champagne. We want to have it as our toasting champagne since it is so cheap. I originally wanted Asti, but we tasted this at a Bridal Show and fell in love. My fiance even won a CASE of it!! Wooo hoooo!! I’m not sure if we can actually serve the wine as one of our drinks because our venue is very strict about bringing in outside alcohol but they said we can choose the toasting champagne. I’m keeping my fingers crossed we can share this with everyone!

I love how personal you’re getting with the wine choices… we’re pretty much deferring to our resident wine aficionado, my daddy-o

I think limousines are a great way to make a wine tour more exciting. They take away the hassle of drinking and driving, providing you with an opportunity to have a lot of fun! Just be careful which company you choose to work with, most limo companies are out for money, where so are there to show you a great time!
