About Mrs. Funnel Cake

As the month of March began, Mr. Funnel Cake and I went through a whirlwind of stressful events when I tried to resign from work and found out I was legally obligated to stay there until the end of 2011. Crazy, eh? We thought so.

After lots of tears and turmoil, I was finally granted my release. And somehow, among all this drama, we were able to complete our marriage preparation class!

I mentioned earlier, our first encounter with Father John was a little abrasive, especially for an emotionally fragile woman like me. After our brutal interrogation interview, I had almost thought Father John would tell us to just forget it and that we weren’t welcome in the church. It turns out Father John is just a cynical Scott with a good sense of humour!

So in great need of a mental break, we headed to the English Mission in Zürich on a Friday evening to begin the class. Father John encouraged us to help ourselves to the beer and wine provided and we spent the evening and the following day going through the course motions.

From Canadians, Americans and English to Dutch, Slovakians, Indians, Italians, a few Swiss and more… we were a very international group of 20 couples or so. Only two couples shared the same nationality as each other. Everyone else was a mix, with some people using ESL (English as a second language) as their common tongue.

I have to say, it was extremely comforting to meet such a large group of Catholics who were also in international relationships. Many people came from long distance scenarios and had also completed civil unions prior to marrying in the church for visa reasons or were already living together. (In sin, gasp!!)

The thing we had in common was that we were all still looking forward to marrying in the church. There were a lot of people also doing their civil unions in Switzerland and planning their church weddings abroad. Thank god, we are not alone! We are not that weird. (Or we are all that weird…?)

I really enjoyed the course and we both were glad it was pretty liberal and not too heavy on the religion. It definitely made the course activities more approachable for us.

Did you both enjoy your marriage preparation class? Was it liberal or conservative?

In our class we learnt that in order to be married, we must first decide who is going to change the light bulbs, and who is going to initiate intercourse all the time. I mean, without knowing that..it’s not going to be a good marriage right? (If I knew how to insert a rolling eye smily I’d do one right here). So anyways, it wasn’t very useful for us. But now it’s done so onward towards the wedding!

We LOVED our engaged encounter. We also had a very liberal priest so that made it nice as a non-catholic. I wass surprised how many of the couples there were already living together. It made FI feel a lot better about our situation. :)

We are going through our pre-cana classes now and have found them pretty enjoyable, some of the stuff is still pertinent to our living situation (together) and some of it isn’t i’m sure that’s how any class is! although i do love how the “teacher” keeps saying statistics show that…. or studies show that…. what studies, what statistics! i want to see these papers!! i think it would be nice fro any couple to go through, even my FH thinks so, since it does bring up some things that should be discussed before marriage…

I guess I don’t understand how he was like SIKE!! after asking those questions in such a rude way last time. To quote Eleanor Roosevelt, “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” I just wouldn’t let someone make me feel bad because my fiance doesn’t speak the right kind of German (WTF????) or because PERCENTAGE-WISE, we don’t go to church “ENOUGH” (gasp…). Even if he was like JK afterwards…really?
Just my $0.02.

I really enjoyed our pre cana marriage prep class, and my husband enjoyed it more than he thought he would. It was a catholic class but the couple running it didn’t really focus on the religious nature of the issues we talked about.

We enjoyed our marriage prep course as much as we could, given it was 3 days long and over superbowl weekend. Most of the guest speakers were great, and there was lots of good food. However, it was awfully long and most of the stuff we had already talked about before.
I will say it was nice though to get some time alone to discuss our relationship, because in our busy lives, it is rare that we do sit down together and talk about these sorts of issues.
All in all it was a good weekend for us.

We aren’t doing an official marriage preparation class. We have done some couples counseling and continue to do so about 1x a month. It is a really great time for us to connect and talk things out.

we just got back from ours this weekend and had a blast. i had thought beforehand that natural family planning was a load of crazy, but after having it properly explained by a couple actually using it succesfully i think we are going to try it!

Wish I could say ours was worthwhile, but it was a wasted weekend. It was scripted stories the presenting couple read word for word. It seemed directed towards high schoolers who had never had a serious relationship before, or had never spoken to their fiance about anything before getting engaged. It was disappointing.
