Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Given that our reception seating assignments are being communicated in a somewhat unusual manner and that our own seating is a bit unexpected, too, it really only makes sense to complete the wonky seating trifecta and use nontraditional table numbers. This is one of those ideas that I came across years ago and mentally filed away. I loved seeing pictures of themed table numbers (or names), showing off the couple’s hobbies, favorite foods, or travel histories.

I sat down at my computer one afternoon and started listing off all the places Mr. Snow Cone and I have traveled over our eight-plus years of dating. I ended up with a far lower number of destinations than I had anticipated, and I was 100% certain I didn’t have enough for each table at our reception. On to plan B!

I then started listing important dates, and that turned out to be even more of a bust than vacation spots. I even fudged it a bit and included important numbers, figuring they would kind of mesh in with dates, and that only gave me a moderate boost. I was all set to scrap the idea and go for traditional table numbers, but then we just decided to throw the two different lists together to get a decent set of options. As a result, we’ll have tables named after important addresses, cities, dates, and a few other random odds and ends. It may not be the most cohesive set of table numbers in the history of weddings, but it will definitely be reflective of us and our time spent together!

I’m planning to use some colored card stock to whip together these numbers, including the table name/number and its significance. Depending on how everything shakes out, I’m hoping to include photos of us from these various places/chapters of our lives on as many table cards as possible, too. Here’s a sample of our list of options:

  • September 18, 2002: the day we started dating
  • April 9, 2010: the day we got engaged
  • Outer Banks, North Carolina: vacation of summer 2005
  • Bahamas: spring-break cruise of March 2010
  • 715: the number of our first apartment together
  • Charleston, South Carolina: our honeymoon destination

Are you doing nontraditional table numbers?  What are you using to replace the standard numbers?

My husband and I were engaged at Disneyland so we used Disneyland rides as our table numbers. We had some other ideas before that too. My husband wanted too do old Nintendo games and use the actual cartridges.

The venue I’m pretty sure we’re going to book is an historic library, so I’ve thought about using great fictional couples as table names. It doesn’t really say anything specifically about US, but I like the idea. Another idea I had was a spin-off of that idea - we like to refer to ourselves as a team, so I’ve thought about using famous (non-romantic) partners, fictional or real, i.e. Starsky & Hutch.

I really like that picture of the street signs as table names. That was one I’d never considered before but might now. FI and I met in college, and I could come up with a bunch of recognizable street names from the area around campus!

When my best friend got married, she used the groom’s “catchphrases” as table names.

The last wedding we went to didn’t do table numbers and everyone found a good seat without issue. I think we will also probably do that :)

Music is a big thing for us, so we’re doing bands that we’ve seen in concert.

I went to a wedding recently where their table “numbers” were the couple’s favorite brands of beer! They also gave out pint glasses as favors. Too cute!

I know someone who loves movies so they are using the original movie posters as their table names and just running with it. Tres cute!

I had a similar issue. Im listing random facts about each of us as well as important locations from our past 3 years and am falling short for my 17 tables. I think I will now incorporate anniversary dates. My favorite one is the name of the bar we met at :)

Because Mr. D and I began our planning at complete oposite ends of the “what-a-wedding-should-look-like” spectrum, I am thinking about using 2-sided table tents.

Vintagey, traditional side (my side) and perhaps all of his fav’s on the other side; i.e.: his favorite movies of all time, bands, sports teams, etc. just as a surprise/joke on him.

We love to travel, so all of my table names are places we went on a plane.

@MzMarzipan: both of those are really awesome ideas!

@Melanie11: I love the idea of using the literary couples with the library setting

@Miss High Wire: if our wedding was smaller, I’d be tempted to take that position as well :)

@Miss Pony: thanks!

@houstonlawbride: awesome!

@toshella: I love it when a theme/personal touch shows up in multiple places!

@bRooklynRocks: that’s really cool… I’m sure the guests will love it

@Viviana: I think personality and personalization is more important than perfect cohesion in this case, for sure.

@stephbonthego: what a cool way to compromise!

@Kat: those are some of my favorites :)
