Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Bridal Beauty Bribery

May 23rd, 2011 @ 6:34 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

After weighing my makeup options, I decided that, barring any huge curveball, I would be doing my own wedding-day makeup. Instead of splurging on a professional makeup artist for the wedding, I decided I’d pursue a much smaller splurge and schedule a professional makeup consultation to help guide my DIY makeup on W-Day. I researched some options and landed on a makeup artist who offered a service called a “bridal makeup lesson,” which is designed for people who are pretty comfortable with basic makeup application but are interested in adding some oomph for the big day…I’d say that describes my makeup situation pretty perfectly!

Instead of just picking up the phone and scheduling a consultation, I decided to make a little wager with myself. As so many brides before me have described, every woman wants to look and feel her best on her wedding day, which usually translates to toning up and/or dropping a few pounds. Physique-wise, I’m not shooting for anything drastic. I just want to be healthy and feel good about the way I look in my dress, period, end of discussion. So, to recap, I wanted to be healthier AND I wanted a makeup consultation. I let these two desires join forces and engaged in a little bridal-beauty bribery.

I decided that if I worked out 18 out of 30 consecutive days, I’d treat myself to a makeup consultation. I chose April as the month for the self-induced bet and got to work. I didn’t quite hit my mark of 18, but I did exercise more regularly than I normally do, and I did get pretty close to the magical and arbitrarily selected number of 18. Therefore, I gave myself a passing grade for this challenge. Sure, maybe I’m fudging the results a smidge, but the reality is that I did succeed in embracing a healthier lifestyle with more regular exercise. I felt more energetic, more productive, and more accomplished. I decided that, like weight and size, the number of workouts per month is really just a number. The more important barometer is how you feel when you’re working toward a healthful lifestyle. Now that I’ve “succeeded” in my little workout challenge, it’s off to a makeup consultation to create my W-Day look!

Have you ever bribed yourself with something for the wedding? Spill!

Just do your makeup yourself. I did like 5 consultations and wasted money and none of them came out right. Just treat yourself to some good quality makeup instead and do it yourself. Yes I even out on my own fake eyelashes!

I’ve always felt pretty comfortable with the basics of make up. Everyone had always complemented my makeup. However, i realized i needed “professional” make up after my engagement shoot. And by that i don’t mean, like a dragqueen.
So I went to a beauty school for a make up trial from one of the students, which costed $10. After the trial, i loved the work. She ended up doing my hair and make for only $35…SHE DID AN AWESOME JOB. Not only that, but it took the burden and pressure off, one less thing to worry about for your big day!
Try it. YOu’ve got not that much to lose.

I made a wager that if I got a new job I applied for I’d splerge and get fun new RSVPs. I already had enough for everyone, but they were boring. So, when I got the new job, I ordered 20 fun ones just for friends (i didn’t think family would appriciate it). I’m glad I did it, I can’t wait to see the responses!

I, too, am considering doing my make-up myself. In Southern California, make up artists charge so dang much!!!

Can’t wait to hear how your consultation goes! I’ve been struggling with limited options/crazy high pricing for makeup artists in Aspen so I love hearing about the route others’ are choosing to go.

I did my own makeup for my professional business portraits last summer, after my friendor makeup artist bailed on me the night before the shoots. I would highly recommend checking out a couple of youtube videos on how to do makeup for photos, since there are a couple of specific strategies to help highlight your face and give it more dimension. Also, if you use mineral makeup, be sure to continue it down to your chest (just very lightly) so that your face doesn’t reflect light completely differently from your body. My photos came out great and I’m sure yours will too!

I always bribe myself for certain things, takes away the guilt I guess. I think a bridal consultation sounds like a great idea for your DIY makeup!

Hope the consultation goes well. I like the idea of challenging yourself - and way to go, Snow Cone, for keeping perspective on those [arbitrary] numbers.

Go to Mac and get them to give you some tips for your wedding day look. all they ask is for you to buy $50 worth of makeup which is very easy to do. You’ll spend that on buying the products that they just used to achieve your look.
