Mrs. Balloons, Aspen, CO Age and Occupation: 24, Mass Communications graduate, Web Design student, & winery worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer Engagement Date: July 10, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: The Sundeck at The Little Nell About Me: I'm a small-town Midwest girl planning an intimate mountaintop destination wedding complete with a huge DIY at-home reception. As an honors graduate fallen victim to the worst job market in history in my area, we're doing everything we can to still have the wedding of our dreams on a tighter budget. I currently enjoy working at a winery, but I'm lonnng overdue for a day job! I am: a big-time daydreamer, one of the pickiest eaters you'll ever meet, and a lover of pretty paper and awesome fonts. I'm a girly girl who loves to get dolled up, but also a country girl who loves to get muddy and go 4-wheeler riding. I also enjoy singing in the car, boating, going to concerts, the History Channel, carnival food, and going to watch St. Louis Cardinals baseball with my handsome engineer.
About Mrs. Balloons

We decided to create some DIY wood benches…

a.) to further enhance our laid-back, rustic vibe, and

b.) to ease some of the expense of renting so many chairs.

We will be renting some tables and chairs, but I thought some wooden benches would be cute to have around the fire (AKA the s’mores station!) and scattered about for some extra seating.

First, my dad took a chainsaw to some tree stumps that were left over around the house that we burned down. He measured the length from the floor to the seat of his kitchen-table chairs and used that as a guideline for the height of the stumps.

Then Mr. B took some boards that we had in our garage and stained them. We wanted it to look a little more rustic than just a regular stained board, though, so he just used an old rag and lightly rubbed on the stain. He put on just enough to give the plain boards a little color that went with the natural wood grain. He then took a wire brush and scratched it over the board to rough it up a bit. Sorry that I don’t have pictures of the process this time! He got bored while I wasn’t home one day and already had it done when I got home. He did some longer boards for longer benches and some shorter ones for shorter benches.

Here is the finished product of one of the shorter benches:

I’m not sure yet if he plans to nail/screw the boards down or use a heavy-duty wood glue, but I’m sure we’ll wait to do that part until we move them to the reception location so that the pieces will be easier to transport. I’ll keep you updated, though! Oh, and remember my new bunting obsession? I’m thinking a little bunting draped at the bottom of the boards could be pretty freakin’ adorable! I’ll have to see what I can come up with on that.

With the stumps not used for benches, Mr. B also cut me some wood slabs to use for some of my centerpieces…or whatever other crazy idea that I come up with by then. :) A chainsaw was used to cut these as well.

How are your DIY projects coming along? Anyone else planning to have some bench seating around the reception?

I love those benches! The place we originally wanted to get married had logs for guests to sit on and I loved that idea. I think bunting hanging from them will add the perfect touch! I might have to crash your wedding! :) Great idea Balloons!

Love these! I wanted benches instead of chairs, but never thought of diy like this. We’re are also using wood slices in the center of the table. And… we have a smores station and this will definitely be the seating! IDK if you thought about it, but burlap works great with the things you have as well… we’re doing a blush pink with a burlap overlap on our tables!

Ah, so jealous! Those wooden rounds are just what I’m looking for my September centerpieces!! Sadly, there are no woods around this transplanted Ohio girls home. Can’t wait to see what else unfolds during your wedding planning! : )

Love when chainsaws can be used for wedding projects. It’s so opposite to me.

Our venue comes with about 4 pew-looking benches outside. I’m planning to make them into a ‘lounge-area’ since I can’t afford the most-coveted vintage furniture rental. Still need to figure out how I’m going to dress them up, but I’m excited!

As someone who is so obsessed with ’s’mores that I had to learn to perfect the art of making them in the toaster oven(yes, it can be done!), I HEART your s’mores bar idea -BEST. EVER. DESSERT!
