My Non-Hen’s Do

May 23rd, 2011 @ 9:38 am by Mrs. Jaguar

In Sydney, the normal thing to do for a bachelorette party, otherwise known as a Hen’s Do, is to head into the city, drink a lot, befriend lots of drunken male boys and dance the night away—with a few penises thrown in for good measure.

This is all well and good, except…well, I’m a homebody. And while I love a good dance as much as the next person, we don’t live close to the city and the practicalities (and costs!) of organising a big night out sort of had me worried. Also, since we’re being totally honest here, I’m not a girl that is closely surrounded by dozens of friends. I’ve always been the kind of person to stick with a few close ones around me, and really appreciate who I’ve got. Crowds and me? Just don’t mix.

I still wanted to have some kind of a ‘do’ with my closest friends, so I attempted to organise an event via Facebook, to see how many would be free and if they were interested. And on every single date I chose? A handful couldn’t make it. It was getting way too frustrating to plan, so I decided to throw in the towel—until the idea was brought up to just keep it simple.

And simple it shall be! It’ll just be myself, my mum, and closest aunty and my three bridesmaids, ready to have a good time. We’ll be staying at my parents’ house (think a twenty-something sleepover!) and indulging in pizza, cocktails, board games, and cheesy wedding movies. We’ve roped my little brother into playing bartender for the evening, we have a whole cupboard full of games that are good to go, and it should be a laugh. It might not be your typical drunken bachelorette shindig, but that’s just how we roll.

(You better believe I’ll be wearing a veil though. A girl only gets to indulge like that a couple of times in her life, if she’s lucky.)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a non-hen’s do to attend!

How did you celebrate with your ladies before the wedding?

I will be having my bachelorette party later in the summer and have no idea what my girls are planning. But your “hen-do” sounds perfect!!!

It’s a great plan. I would choose that too over a crazy bar night!

I will be having an out of town hen do two months before the wedding, but will be having a sleep over the night before in the hotel. The plan is to watch wedding movies, drink champagne and junk food!

Planning on the same thing. I don’t want any plastic penises, stomach-achey drinks, or random “dudes” touching me during my bachelorette party.

I’m a homebody too. So your bachelorette party sounds perfect! I think I will be heading to Palm Springs to lay by a pool for two days with my girlfriends and maybe have a margarita or two. =) Its not too far of a location and girls can come for the entire weekend, one night or even just the day. I try to be accomodating!!

That sounds just perfect. You sound a lot like me! I am definitely not a drinking, bar-loving, big crowd girl. Thanks for the inspiration, and the reminder that it’s OK to not have a typical bachelorette party!

This sounds like the perfect hen’s do to me! I went to one like this several years ago and it was hands down, the best hen’s do I’d ever been to! We all wore comfy pj’s, drank some fruit mixed drink, did our nails, watched cheesy movies, and played ridiculous games that brought us back to our childhood - SOOO much fun! Enjoy!

I’m still undecided about whether we’re getting married in Australia or the USA (a DIY wedding in the USA is A LOT cheaper than in Australia) but if we have it in the USA, we’ll get wristbands for our bridal party and take them all to SXSW.
