About Mrs. Biscuit

This past weekend I was in Menomonie, WI celebrating a close friend’s nuptials. It was a fabulous weekend, and a great trip. When we came home, we were greeted with a Facebook status from one of Mr. Biscuit’s aunts. It turns out that the hotel where we are having our wedding is completely booked on our wedding date. How did this happen?

Well, our room block has been long gone, as my side of the family and my friends jumped the gun and booked their rooms in March (thanks friends/family!). Mr. Biscuit’s family, however, had not booked their rooms yet.

And during that period of time between March and May, participants in a motorcycle convention booked our hotel. It’s the largest motorcycle convention in the area, called Mountainfest. If you’ve never heard of Mountainfest, a few competent motorcyclists and thousands of others who need their licenses revoked flock to my town and rev their engines for a weekend. It’s harmless fun, and the patrons are very polite and bring a lot of business to Morgantown, but most of the area does try to refrain from leaving their houses for those three days.

So, our wedding is going to occur in the middle of motorcycle fest. A+. It is almost impossible to drive anywhere when these folks are in town, and equally as difficult to find hotel rooms. I may or may not need a stiff drink.

Anyone else have a major event in their town on their wedding day?

Oh no!!! One of my friends just had her wedding over the same weekend as a big horse racing even around here. Same thing…no hotels in the area. It’s such a bummer! But I’m sure you can make the best of it! Keep shopping around…something has to be open somewhere! Or, ask your wedding coordinator to keep an eye on cancellations or something…you may be able to squeeze a few more in.

Gah! Me too! I live in small town PA, unfortunately just a short ride down the highway from Happy Valley (Penn State). A few weeks ago my mother called the closest hotel to our home, to book a room and they were sold out, overbooked in fact. Hmmm …

After calling 3 more hotels and getting the same response she called me. I knew she had to be mistaken. 7 phone calls later and 1 major freakout later, yep, she was right. I have chosen to get married on the same day that Penn Stated is playing Alabama. The first time in 10 years, IN Happy Valley. Nearly every hotel room in 200 miles is booked. I say nearly because thankfully we got THE last 7 rooms available. And my name is also on the “please please please pleeeese call me if a broom closet opens up” cancellation list at the first 7 hotels.

I didn’t think there would be anything going on in my town…until I found out that the College World Series was taking place during my wedding weekend. Although my wedding is in Lincoln and not Omaha…people still will drive from half an hour away to stay. So…my hotel is already booked the night before the wedding and no one even knows whose playing in the CWS!!

Oh Mountainfest! The best weekend of the year in Morgantown :-P. There’s a softball championship the weekend we’re getting married in Ohio, but I think we *may* be okay, though we were told if people didn’t book early enough we may not have enough rooms at our hotel. Good luck though with everything - I’m sure it will all work out!! Maybe Mountainfest will be less busy this year :-)

While certainly not ideal, it happens. ESPECIALLY when people put things off. One piece of advice to save your sanity - they are adults, you gave them ample time and information, what they do from here is their problem. They can google the hotel, find out what other hotels are nearby and start calling for rooms. This is NOT YOUR PROBLEM! You’ll have enough stress with things that are legitimately under your purview… this aint one of ‘em. :)

I used to work at Outback in Morgantown… right near the Harley Davidson place. During Mountainfest, our restaurant was the craziest, beer flowing, money flowing, leather-packed weekend of my life! Good luck…

I don’t know how many guests you need to find rooms for, but are B&B’s an option anywhere near your venue? Sounds like it might be more peaceful for them, anyway!

Lame to the lack of hotel rooms. Will you at least get to take cool pictures with the motorcycles/their owners?

I’m with mdarrah. You gave them the info; if they didn’t get a room in time it’s something for them to deal with.

What a fantastic welcome home present. However, you told people to book their rooms. It’s not your fault.

Yes. Taylor Swift concert. I shudder at the thought of so many teeny boppers running around me on my wedding day.

I think there’s a motorcycle something-or-another in town on our wedding date as well. Ughhhhhh.

I soooo feel your pain!! I thought 6 months before our wedding was PLENTY of time to book our hotel block. Imagine my surprise/horror/slight rage when I discovered that ALL of the hotels in town were already blocked for a giant car show!!! After a brief bridezilla meltdown, I found a hotel in a surrounding suburb. It’s 12 miles away from our ceremony/reception, but at that point, I was just happy to find SOMETHING!! So instead of motorcyclists, I’ll have crazy muscle car men in town for my wedding. Woo hoo!! ;)

Maybe you need to rethink the bar situation and have some hard liquor on hand. ;)
